View Full Version : A Challenge To The Community At Large

I've grown tired of making characters. As such, I don't want to make a character but I do want to play in a D&D game. So, I've come to the good folks at Gaming In The Playground to solve my dilemma.

I'm going to ask the community to help me make a 5th level character. He or she will be entirely made by the community, and will be appropriately fluffed out by anyone who has the patience to do so.

The books I'm allowed to draw from are: Frostburn, Sandstorm, PHBII, Core, the Complete Series(sans Champion), and the Races of [X] series.

As such, I'm going to be putting up a vote for every aspect of the character that isn't randomly determined or purchased with Gold.

The following items will be randomly determined: Age, Height, Gender, Weight, Hair Color, and Eye Color.

The Character As It Stands

Name: Stubby McPlaceholder
Race: Kobold
Class: Ranger; Avenging Executioner
Level: 5
XP: 10,000
Gender: Male
Age: 16
Height: 2'3"
Weight: 32 lbs
Hair Color: Bald
Eye Color: Green

Stats: (Post Racial Adjustments)
STR - 8
DEX - 17
CON - 12
INT - 12
WIS - 14
CHA - 12

Feats:
Track [Bonus]
Weapon Finesse [1st]
Two-Weapon Fighting [Bonus]
Trophy Collector [3rd]
Endurance [Bonus]

Items:
Longbow. 75
Quivers of arrows. 1
Two +1 Light Picks. 4608
+1 chain shirt. 1250
Handy Haversack. 2000
Masterwork tool of Intimidate. 50
Wand of Cure Light Wounds (Ranger spells FTW) 750
At least two Trophies(Humanskin Belt, Human skull hat). 200
Random Crap. 66gp
A bedroll, a blanket, 5 square yards of canvas, some chalk, flint and steel, a grappling hook, a ladder, a mirror, a supply of oil flasks, a vial, a jug, couple sheets of paper, 10-foot pole, 100 feet of silk rope, a whistle, a shovel, a tent, taxidermy kit, and an explorer's outfit.

Avenging Executioner wins by a margin. Next up: Feats.

The_Werebear
2008-02-24, 03:24 AM
1st) Weapon Finesse (-4 strength penalty, +2 dex. Yeah)
(Combat Style- Two Weapon Fighting)
3rd) Trophy Collector, PHBII- This is actually a pretty good feat for him, fluff and crunch wise.
Crunch: Each trophy gives him a +2 bonus to intimidate checks against the creature type that it is from, so a scalp or two will go along way to alleviate the size penalty he will normally be taking for being smaller than his foes. Since he is going to be focusing on Avenging Executioner (and thus will be intimidating foes in combat frequently to make use of some of the abilities) keeping that intimidate score up will be important, even more so considering that he has to cross class intimidate.

Fluff: Some species tragically wronged him. Now he is wearing them as a hat. Poetic, no?

I also second MammonAzrael's idea to use the Kobold Racial Substitution levels (at least the 4th level one that gives a dire weasel animal companion)

ZeroNumerous

Let's see... items...

As a ranger, we must have a bow. That's just a given, no matter whether two-weapon or ranged. So, a basic longbow, and a supply of arrows. Perhaps some magic arrows as well - we wouldn't need many, but they can situationally be our best friends.

As for our main weapons - How about two longswords, one with flaming, and one with thundering? There are probably better suggestions for weapons out there.

Armor - masterwork chain shirt.

We'll take one handy haversack. Always useful.

Basics! A bedroll, a blanket, 5 square yards of canvas, some chalk, flint and steel, a grappling hook, a ladder, an everburning torch, a mirror, a supply of oil flasks, a vial, a jug, couple sheets of paper, 10-foot pole, 500 feet of rope, 50 feet of silk rope, a whistle, a shovel, and a tent. Rations, too, of course, and an explorer's outfit.

One masterwork tool of intimidation - a scary mask? a book full of tips on how to scare people? as well as tools for any other skill we'll be using.

And a pair of bracers of armor. I don't like to die.

So let's see - around 5000 for the weapons, 100 for the bow, 100 for the armor, 2000 for the sack, and a bit for some sleep arrows. (I don't have many books, so if someone else has more arrows, let's grab a few more.) Call it around a hundred or two for the macgyver materials as well. Couple hundred worth of tools, 1000 for the bracers, and the rest for emergencies.

Here it is in list form.

Longbow.
Quivers of arrows.
Three sleep arrows.
+1 flaming longsword
+1 thundering longsword
Masterwork chain shirt.
Handy Haversack.
Masterwork tool of Intimidate.
Masterwork tool of Hide.
Masterwork tool of Survival.
Masterwork tool of Use Rope.
Bracers of Armor.
And all of this:
A bedroll, a blanket, 5 square yards of canvas, some chalk, flint and steel, a grappling hook, a ladder, an everburning torch, a mirror, a supply of oil flasks, a vial, a jug, couple sheets of paper, 10-foot pole, 500 feet of rope, 50 feet of silk rope, a whistle, a shovel, and a tent. Rations, too, of course, and an explorer's outfit.

That is by no means considered to be an optimal or inclusive list, and I didn't paw through the other books for neat items to add. These are just a few suggestions.

That's why I tried to choose tools for skills that we are certain to use -

Intimidate, because the PRC we're headed for demands it.
Hide, because we get sudden strike damage - it's practically a requirement.
Survival - ranger without survival? Never seen it.
Use rope is just handy.

Now, because we're doing items now, I just tried to pick generally. Once we pick skills later, if allowed, I'd recommend getting tools for all skills we use regularly. I just wanted to make sure to leave budget for tools by buying a couple now.

Longbow. 75
Quivers of arrows. 1
Three sleep arrows.- No point there
+1 flaming longsword
+1 thundering longsword- can't afford this.
Two +1 Light Picks instead. 4608
+1 chain shirt. 1250
Handy Haversack. 2000
Masterwork tool of Intimidate. 50
Wand of Cure Light Wounds (Ranger spells FTW) 750
At least two Trophies. 200
Bracers of Armor.
And all of this:
A bedroll, a blanket, 5 square yards of canvas, some chalk, flint and steel, a grappling hook, a ladder, an everburning torch Darkvision, a mirror, a supply of oil flasks, a vial, a jug, couple sheets of paper, 10-foot pole, 500 feet of rope, 50 feet of silk rope, a whistle, Taxidermy craft tools, a shovel, and a tent. Rations, too, of courseforage for food, and an explorer's outfit. (Going to go for an even number and say 66gp)

That is by no means considered to be an optimal or inclusive list, and I didn't paw through the other books for neat items to add. These are just a few suggestions.

Not a bad list. Marked up for your convenience.

Just so you know, Intimidate can't be raised to 8 until 16th level since it's Cross Class.

I know... I was just mentioning how many skill points you were actually spending... I'm not calculating actual bonuses or anything....

I'll edit the post to show ranks vs cost.

dipping into Fighter might be useful for the half price intimidate and the bonus feat. the loss of a little Ranger progression might be worth being a Bloodhound a little earlier.

Far too late for class-voting.
