View Full Version : Meme Tracker 9001

I don't know about you and your Internets and your 4Chans and so on, but I always seem to find myself finding memes at the tail end of their existence.

So, how about a thread to write down memes as you find them, provide links, and make sure everyone is in on it. This is totally media since all memes seem to result from some sort of Memetic Mutation (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MemeticMutation) of traditional media.

So go on and post, and posit the origin of said meme, if you'd like to take a guess.

(and yes, I know that the Meme Tracker is over 9000 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TBtpyeLxVkI))

Also: Caramell's song "Caramelldansen" (http://mizunaga.blogspot.com/2008/02/caramelldansen.html) + anime = hilarity (http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=caramelldansen+caramell&search_type=)

Rules of the Internet:

Rule #1 Do not talk about /b/.
Rule #2 DO NOT talk about /b/.

Most memes come from /b/ (if you value your sanity, do not go anywhere near there), therefore do not talk about it. It may be for your greater good to not try to follow memes, it can damage the mind and soul. Just trust us on this one.

As for memes, I've noticed that "In America!" seems to be tapering out about now. But memes are revived all the time. Me, I'm eagerly anticipating the day that the Giant Enemy Crab meme to come back to life.

A currently emerging meme is the line "I drink your milkshake" from the movie There Will Be Blood; go on YouTube to find the scene (and about fifty re-edited versions with "My Milkshake Brings All the Boys to the Yard" playing over it). However, it seems like people are trying too hard to make it a meme, and it's from something mainstream, so it seems rather unlikely that it'll ever acquire true viral memedom.

Most memes come from /b/

I thought most memes came from the Something Awful forums. That's where we got the term "image macro" and the "All your base are belong to us" meme, along with a bunch of others that I can't think of right now. What did /b/ ever give us that wasn't shunned by half of the internet and secretly masturbated to by the other half?

Maybe it's an Unearthed Arcana Paladin of Tyranny or a 4e paladin (which apparently will be able to follow Asmodeus).

But... if Bill Gates is Asmodeus, then Steve Baumler is Mephistopheles. ...Don't do that to Mephy. He deserves better.

Also, for some reason, Firefox spellchecker has Mephistopheles, but not Asmodeus. Odd.

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing Firefox spellchecker he didn't exist. Asmodeus is a few shades craftier than even ol' Mephisto.

If memory serves, most come from either /b/ or SA, with a few trickling out from Fark every now and then. Eric Bauman steals most of them for his website and the rest will show up on every forum sooner or later.

The song used for Leekspin is in Finnish, although the specific verse that goes to the animation is actually gibberish.

Also: leekspin is the only thing I know even remotely connected to Bleach, except for a vague sense of the plot that makes me not want to know anything else.

You could try worshiping Richard Stallman. He sleeps with Katanas under his pillow to protect him from Microsoft Lackeys. Anyone who lives like that is okay in my book.

Leekspin is better then Bleach. Literally the only good thing that has come from that anime is an immense amount of adorable yuri slash. Yet when it comes on I can't change the channel.. perhaps I'm a masochist.

Actually, Bleach did give one awesome thing: A voiceover of a scene from the anime.

"Hello, my name is Ichigo Montoya. You killed my Father. Bankai."

Eh, Bleach isn't bad. I haven't watched it for some time, but it's a very good shonen fighting anime. Of course, that means it possesses all the positive and negative qualities of a shonen fighting anime...

And what is the point of making your own slash ships in a series that is already crawling with homosexual crushes? Well, mostly played for laugh, but still.

You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. At least the chans start their own memes and aren't just known for stealing everyone else's and claiming it was theirs.

That's the point. If everyone from the chans says that they're from ebaums, then the almighty /b/ will be remain free from the likes of GAIA and suchlike. Also, during /i/ business, it helps to have plausible deniability.

@ nothing clever - long post is looooong.

It is a far, far better thing not to know.

Protip, lesson one, whatever - don't follow the links of a 4channer.

Indeed, I'd recommend staying away from the 4chan boards. They're Cthulhu in forum form, and knocked out half my SAN score on a successful roll upon seeing the homepage. Good thing I took Immunizing trauma and numb emotions as character traits.

Hmm... this thread turned out to be entertaining and educational. Success!

Now, to drag out some older memes...

Anime conventions, in case you didn't know, used to be where "memes" would arrive. Before the Internet, the combination of Superior VHS Technology skills and fandom resulted in some interesting mash-ups. After the Internet, the tradition continued.

Here's a skit (http://youtube.com/watch?v=mMiJrfj1V5Y) I saw back in '03 at one of them. Hilarious!

Reference Material
Kikko-Man (http://youtube.com/watch?v=_HckRLrBXQM) (and in English (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Wz-mJed_bP0))
Fish Fight (http://youtube.com/watch?v=jbwm27ry05M)
...and Witch Hunter Robin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Witch_Hunter_Robin).

"Mass naked child events" ... no, that I do not know. Do I want to?

Also: "Reachcat has Reach" tickled me for some reason. Next game I have a Large Cat in, I will dub him Reachcat. That way, when the PCs charge it and are surprised that it gets an AoE, I can respond "Reachcat has reach" and giggle maniacally.

...don't judge me! Entire campaigns have been written for worse reasons!

It's as old as 2003 - it originated in this round of 'hunt-the-otherkin' (http://community.livejournal.com/debate/2638665.html), from LJDrama.

That nobody has mentioned harbl is surprising.

We're in mourning for the loss of /z/ and the great SoRu.

Yeah ... Those are the TWO rules of the internet ... there arent, say about fifty more

As the wise SoRu said, there are ZOMG NONE rules to the internet; they're merely an import from gaia and fight club. Number 34 is the only reliable one.

TTGL is in a low ebb on the popularity cycle right now, on all applicable sections (although /a/ is filled with hate for everything anyway, as far as I can tell). Right now, we're in the "backlash against initial popularity" phase, which usually lasts a decade or so.

Oh, I forgot something. TROMBE OVERRIDE!

But.. but.. Viral marketing propagates a good show. That and yes, unfortunate that there is a lot of popularity hate, but that's what closed down SaiGar.

Interestingly, not only are both shows done by the same studio (Kyoto Animation), but the same seiyu (Hirano Aya) does the voice for Haruhi and Konata (the long blue haired girl in Lucky☆Star). I found the scene where she switched back and forth between the Haruhi and Konata voices at the cosplay cafe very amusing.

Chiha Minori (Yuki Nagato) is also in Lucky Star, but I don't know the name of her other character (just that she's the one who is essentially Yuki). I think Mikuru's VA might also be a character in there, but I only know Lucky Star by reputation, really.

I think this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjFCpFK-7G4) sums up my impression of it, though.

This thread has yet to have promotions. I doubt there will be promotions in this thread in fact. Unless someone wants to become an hero, which I suggest against.

But yes, promotions is silly.

In my case, I'm a fa/tg/uy along with a few other things.

>>But can it fire each side at the same time at the same target? Wouldn't it be kinda, you know, too blocky for that?
NOT IF IT'S SPINNING AT 100 RPM
