I'm going to post a list of books that I have found to be quite beneficial to the construction of "The Ultimate City", each giving more and more tips to make a city/town/metropolis/etc more alive and full of detail.

In my opinion however, even these are not sufficient to quench my obsession over knowing more about a single neighborhood than I do about the actual neighborhood I live in, and I hope anyone who has a Link, their own City Construction advice, or yet another book that I may have left out will feel free to contribute with their own post.

(Suggestions will be credited to 1st submitter)

Books

- A Magical Medieval Society: Western Europe
- Dungeon Master's Guide
- Dungeon Master for Dummies
- Cityscape (iceddragons)
- Races of (Stone, Destiny, etc) (Kizara)
- Epic Level Handbook (Kizara)
- Stronghold Builder's Guide (Kizara)

Cityscape seems like it would belong on your list of books.

The Epic Level Handbook had some real interesting details on the planar meteropolises.

Also, the various Races of X books detail the way those races live, and give you an idea to what their 'cities' are like.

Finally, the Stronghold Builder's Guidebook (3.0) doesn't have city details per-se, but it does give you the tools to construct a specific building in or near a city. It gives you an idea of how feasible that super-magic castle or the floating wizard's tower actually are, for example.

Though not exclusively city-oriented, S. John Ross' Medieval Demographics (http://www.io.com/~sjohn/demog.htm) article deserves a link. It's one of my favourite demographic references.
