Well, they don't technically NEED Roy once they're inside a school for wizards. They can just get one of them to scry.

I was under the impression that the Greenhilt family is fairly wealthy. As such, I'd expect they'd be able to afford a ressurection spell once they meet up with Julia - if not before. That's not a guarantee though, Julia might be on an allowance as both of her parents are now dead.
