Gimped interactive Pokemon FireRed Run! Silliness ensues!

Hey there, ladies and gents. I'm getting a little bored of playing through Pokemon the same way over and over with the same party, so this time I want to mix things up a little bit.
I've downloaded a slight hack for my ROM of FireRed (No, I will not tell you where to find them. They're not hard to find.) that lets me change the starter Pokemon, and I'm going with Marill. It won't evolve 'til after I beat the Elite Four and get the National Dex, and I intend to use it all the way through. First problem I've run into is that I have no idea what to nickname it.
Just in case you've never played (and still are reading this... *shrug*), Marill is a little blue blob of a mouse, and it evolves into an aqua-rabbit thing named Azumarill. I'd like to name it something... cool. But I'm frankly stumped.

Second off, I have a problem of only going for the strongest stuff in-game. One reason I'm using FireRed is that the Pokemon are on the whole weaker, and it's harder to selectively create monsters because of lack of breeding and good EV training zones until late game. What I'd like is for people to suggest underused Pokemon for me to grab. I'd like a balanced team type-wise, but other than that I'd love some crazy suggestions!

Nickname wise mythology can lead to some inspiration sometimes, as well as making any human opponents unable to plan until they actually see the pokemon instead of as soon as the see "so and so sent in blissey".

As for not super strong pokemon you can take a look at smogon's underused tier list here (http://www.smogon.com/dp/tiers/uu), and see what suits your style there.

Unfortunately, I have no access to half of those in Pokemon FireRed.
Basically, all I get without more intense hacking is everything in Red version, and after the Elite Four some islands with GSC Pokemon open up. 'Til then, I'd like to stick to Pokemon that are in-game. (This is sort of in the spirit of the Something Awful let's play FireRed thread (http://fromearth.net/LetsPlay/Pokemon%20FireRed/index.html), as it is where I got the idea from.)

Sooooo... any horrible Pokemon I should use?:smallbiggrin:

Butterfree and Beedrill are perennial favorites, so why not try... Kakuna and Metapod, caught as such? (When you catch Metapod or Kakuna, they somehow managed to pay a visit to the Move Deleter to remove their moves other than Harden)

Raticate (Before Gym 1)
Rapidash (Pretty late iirc)
Beedrill (Before Gym 1)
Onix (Between Gym 1 and 2)
Electrode (Power Plant)

That is a 5-minute party that seems pretty good type-wise while all low-tier Pokemon. Seems like a good mix of early and late Pokemon.

Unfortunately, legitimate Ponyta can only be found on the Sevii Islands, and the same goes for Rapidash.

Weezing's not a bad call actually. He can learn quite a large number of moves via TM, so he'd work pretty well filling in gaps in the team (He can learn Flamethower and Thunderbolt, for example, which would be useful).

You should record this run, or take screenshots along the way and document it or something. Would make an entertaining read :p

Oh, and yeah, The Sevii Islands are the ones you can reach after Cinnibar Gym.

The whole point is to come up with a balanced but weaker/underused team though. Kind of like a handicap, or a challenge run, or something :p

Hmm, what about these:

Zubat/Golbat: Since it's fire Red, he won't evolve into Crobat until you beat the elite 4. I've fought plenty, but never actually used one.
Geodude/Graveler: Again, quite common and underused from my experience
Tentacruel/Tentacruel: As above, though you'd already have marill so he might be redundant.
Machop/Machoke
Cubone/Marrowak
Eggsecutor (probably butchered it, the 6 eggs from the safari zone)

Ah, yeah. I forgot that the first few Sevii Islands can be accessed without defeating the Elite 4.

Exeggcute are the six small egg-seed-things, Exeggutor is their Leaf Stone-caused evolution.

Exeggutor is actually almost competent in battle, with high Sp. Attack, but low speed...

I definitely want to try to play through and take some nifty screencaps, perhaps with a bit of commentary. As I said before, though, this concept is largely ripped off the Something Awful forums Let's Play Pokemon threads taken from here (http://fromearth.net/LetsPlay/), so... original this is not.

In Emerald I got a Wurmple to level 40 once. Even used it against the Elite Four but had to revive it alot.

Can you get Farfetched in Fire Red? I've used the one you can get in the trade (it might be the only one in the game but I'm not sure) and it was underpowered but fun.

I used a Paras in FireRed...

It was promptly named HM SLAVE. He was only used when I needed Rock Smash, Strength, Flash, or Cut. Surf and Fly were delegated to useful Pokemon and Waterfall... I don't even remember.

Ummm... Yeah. I'm all behind doing the runthrough, but should I go to the trouble of a big post like that with lots of images and jokes, or should I just stick to the facts, jack?

Yeah, I'm using VisualBoy Advance, with a FireRed ROM. I do have a confession - I don't own FireRed - my brother does.

So, fun story. I got about 250 pictures from which to select a new update, got Marill up to level 8, thought I had the perfect nature and ability, and even got the gender I wanted, all without hacking.

I'm guessing right now that later on, I will probably get the broad end of the shaft, when it comes to party composition. Therefore, I'm going to try to set up Marill as a strong fall-back for when all else fails. Which means, I'm going to have to save and reload a lot. Which is funny, because on my first try (no joke) I got a female Marill with a Brave nature, which is exactly what I wanted... and forgot to look at the second page of stats.

Then, a half hour later, I noticed that it had Thick Fat, and not Huge Power.
And I had overwritten my main save state.
Heh.

So, looks like I have to do a bit over, and my next update should be some time tomorrow. Don't worry, this one'll be a bit shorter, and a bit more split up.

In other news, I'm going to need some name suggestions for the first few pokemon! Marill is already taken care of - in fact, I'm going to do a little contest for guessing where the name I chose came from. Rattata is also named, but I need names for other likely early catches.
