The reason I ask is that there's a specific monster manual entry for ghosts .. can't access SRD right now ... but Roy doesn't seem to interact with the other characters like that monster. No aura of fear, no aging damage, impossible to perceive, etc.

Besides which, IIRC there are certain prerequisites for a character becoming an MM ghost in addition to being dead, which Roy has not filled.

So from a D&D perspective what is he? And is he "undead"?

No. He's dead. Nothing "Un" about it.

Typically, the spirit of a truly dead being becomes so attached to whatever plane they have for the afterlife that they become some sort of Outsider, if they are represented at all.

Per 3.5 Roy is not a ghost. He is however a spirit on the material plane attempting to communicate with the living. Damn you WotC! (Just kidding, please dont assinate me.)
