View Full Version : Raiders of Oakhurst, Group 1

Abardam
2008-03-10, 11:03 PM
The town of Oakhurst has been plagued by monsters. Small monstrous creatures have been harassing Oakhurst at night, stealing chickens, killing sheep, breaking windows and fence posts, and otherwise making nuisances of themselves. The villagers haven’t seen the creatures except for red eyes glowing in the darkness, but the creatures left behind three-toed clawed track marked with lines indicating tails.

Teren IV, the elder, begs your help. 4 gold pieces each, and four sacks of grain. It isn't much, but it's all they can afford. You accept because you are brave adventurers.

On the fourth day, you set out. Riardon Brightvale tracks the most recent trail, made by four of the creatures to a cave four miles to the north. There is a faint glow coming from the inside.

And so we arrive at last. Countless visions and lotus dreams have told me of this place. The half-elf approaches the cavern and then pauses abruptly. Whose going in first?

Indeed, thanks to the excellent tracking skills of our friend Riordan, we are now prepared to do battle with the evil that has tormented that poor town. Drawing his sword and pointing it towards the entrance. I will gladly lead the charge into battle!

I C'not wait for this! I hate to wait, I'm going in! with that, Kathra charged into the cave, not looking back to see if anyone was following.

Kathra charges into a large dank cave lit by a fire pit in the center, over which the carcasses of two chickens are slowly roasting. A group of four small creatures with brown scaled skin, clawed hands, tails, and red glowing eyes lounge about the fire, cackling softly. A narrow stream enters the cave from a descending passage directly opposite, forming a large pool against the northwest wall. To the left, a series of steps lead up to an ascending passage, while a narrower passage exist the cave to the far right.

When they see you, they hastily fall over themselves trying to pick their weapons up.

Riardon Brightvale:

The quiet Eladrin nodded to Corrin at his compliment in simple gratitude and wordlessly picked readied his bow as they entered the cave. He was not one to speak too much, even at a compliment. He went out and took a quick look around to catch the others speak of the upcoming confrontation. He had no interest in going in first, the clinking ones would be better suited for that, that being said perhaps they could just talk to the creatures ...

too late the clinking ones had gone foreword.

Actually, on second thought, I think I'll scrap the surprise round and go straight to Round 1.

Initiative rolls/action points:
ERIAS THE SUNLORD: 19/1
RIARDON BRIGHTVALE: 18/1
TIRA DUSKMEADOW: 17/1
KATHRA IRONFORGE: 15/1
CORRIN REEDSON: 14/1
SKAMOS REDMOON:5/1

KOBOLDS: [roll0]

Alright, so just tell me what your characters are going to do, and if it would be impossible (or improbable, such as say, if you try to attack a kobold who's already been downed) I'm going to modify it as close to the original action as I can (like say attacking the kobold next to him instead). If you do not want this, please also post any alternate actions. Also, to those with "immediate reaction" abilities (like Cleave or Fox's Cunning), please state if, when, and how you want to use them.

Move action: If H12 or H13 are still alive, then I move up to them (move up 4 or up 3, up-right diagonal 1) ; if not, move up 5 to stand in front of G11.
Minor action: Divine challenge, choose H13 over H12 if both are alive; otherwise just use the kobold I'm standing in front of.
Standard action: Holy Strike against the marked kobold.

EDIT: heh; critical hit, so, under the new rules, that's 11 damage, right?

Riardon's arrow flies across the room, but the kobold dives aside and manages to evade it! Tira's target is consumed by white flame! Kathra's warhammer cracks another kobold's ribs! And another's is smote by Corrin's sword!

The remaining kobold moves up and attacks Corrin! ([roll0] vs. AC, 2 damage.) The kobold sentry activates the alarm and the caltrop trap, raining caltrops down! (Caltrops: +3 against reflex, 1d4 damage, unless care is taken to cross, which means 2 squares of movement.) Then he shifts forward, and throws a spear at Corrin! ([roll1], [roll2] damage.) (Yep, both miss.)

Then Skamos fires darts of light into the last minion, dropping him!

Four more kobolds enter from the northeast, drawn by the alarm!

Skamos sees new kobolds enetering the cave just as the kobold he just killed hits the ground. Erias and Riardon find their marks, and the kobolds drop to the floor! However, Tira's eldritch blast misses its target.

The remaining kobolds swarm around Kathra! The two in front attack with spears ([roll0], and [roll1], both for 2 damage) and the sentry at the back draws and throws another spear ([roll2], for [roll3] damage). Two skirmishers also arrive, drawn by the alarm!

((Also, Skamos: the secondary attack might hit (I don't think it's dependent on the primary attack, anyway))

Skamos hurls an orb of force at one of the two kobolds in front, which explodes and hurls shards of force in every direction! The kobold dodges it, but the shards ([roll4], [roll5]) also miss!

Erias gets out of the fire and heals himself for 12. Riardon lets fly an arrow toward the warcaster, but it strikes only the cave wall! Tira attacks the hobgoblin's eyesight, and deals 7 damage! (Plus 2.) Kathra swings her axe and drops the first skirmisher! The momentum carries the axe into the second one, but he saw it coming and dodged it. Corrin opts to finish off the sentry, but he misses!

Edging slowly away from Corrin, the kobold takes a stab at him ([roll0], [roll1]). Then he gingerly moves into the caltrops. ((In case you're counting: shift, standard action attack, shift, since kobolds shift as a minor action.))
The remaining skirmisher looks around and suddenly spots the warlock, somehow behind him. He moves back to challenge her, but as he does so, the fighter spots an opening and strikes! (Opportunity attack - [roll2], [roll3].) The kobold still stands, however, and he attacks Tira! ([roll4], [roll5])

Skamos waves his hands and casts his sleep magic ((burst 2 means 2 squares from the center, so a 9x9 square I think))! Its victim/s feel woozy, but the hobgoblin is resilient to such magics and uses his HOBGOBLIN RESILIENCE to make an immediate saving throw! ((Not counting this as the "first" saving throw, I'd say the one on his turn is the first saving throw. [roll6])

Varkaze looks around for the impudent half-elf, but, not seeing her, settles on the closest other target: he throws a FORCE PULSE at the fighter! ([roll7] against Reflex; [roll8] damage) Kathra is struck by the blast, but she grits her teeth and remains standing and unmoved!
(Kathra's save to remain standing: [roll9])

E: Varkaze's eyelids droop, and he slumps to the floor, snoring like a guard.

The Sunlord confronts the fleeing kobold, but the kobold nimbly avoids his slash! Riardon looses another arrow, and this time, it strikes scaly flesh! The remaining skirmisher slumps, an arrow in his heart! Tira takes advantage of the warcaster's current condition and hurls damaging energy at him! And Kathra viciously eviscerates him (also, it's a crit)! Corrin strikes once more at the sentry, and the kobold's flesh sizzles as the Amauntor-touched sword slices his scales!

The sentry weighs his options. Seeing his comrade fall and the big hobgoblin leader unconscious on the floor, he decides to slip away. He hops nimbly over the stream and streaks away into the darkness. (Shift, double move. I included his path if you want to follow or something?)

Skamos places the final nail in the warcaster's coffin with a well-aimed magic missile!

Well, we have three choices. The cavern on the left, the cavern on the right and the one up there that the goblin just ran through. He gestures to each with his sword as he speaks. If I thought we could catch up to him, I'd say lets go after him right now, but we probably won't, at least not now that we didn't give chase immediately. As it is, I'd recommend at least a quick check the other caverns (assuming their not too deep) to avoid leaving any passages behind us that a second group could come from and surround us later.

@M0rt: Well technically you're supposed to take a 5-minute rest, but since you guys aren't being threatened anyway I waived it.

This chamber is, if anything, even filthier than the others. Piles of dirty furs cover the floor, a plate of rancid meat festers in one corner, and the walls are covered in crude graffiti in a foreign tongue. A makeshift throne of rocks is piled against the far wall. A brazier of charcoal placed in front of the throne warms and lights the room, but does nothing to relieve the fetid animal stink. One pile of furs appears to be moving slightly, as if something were shivering under it.

Skamos conjures up a spectral hand, which moves over the pile of furs. It manages to grab hold of a small shivering tail, though the rest of the creature is too heavy to lift. Grabbing the tail has an effect, though, as the creature jumps to its feet all of a sudden, scattering the furs.

The creature is a kobold, and he looks warily at the party of adventurers. After a while, he speaks, in broken Common:
"Me Meepo, great king of kobolds. Who you be?"

Hiding under the covers is an interesting behavior for one who claims the title of king. We are the ones sent by the village to deal with the menace that has been plaguing them. The kobold pauses, unsure of how to react to this news. He starts to talk, a few times, but cuts himself off. Suddenly, though, he throws himself to the floor, groveling and making loud sobbing noises.

(For dudes with Passive Insight 14 or better:
For the briefest fraction of a second, Meepo appeared to have a shrewd, calculating look in his beady eyes, before collapsing to the ground.)

"Not tribe's fault!" he cries. "Was all that big bully hobbo's idea! Made tribe leave home to come here to this smelly hole. We no like attacking the humans, honest! He makes us do it!"

The kobold leads your group through a number of pitch-black corridors. At first, the path slopes upwards, but then, as you hear the sound of running water, you begin to walk down the slippery slope, eventually coming to wade through the water. After a few minutes, another campfire is visible, and you can see forms moving around.

As you follow Meepo closer, you can see four orange-skinned humanoids. Two are crouching behind a table which is on its side, wielding bows, and the other two are in front of it, clutching flails. You can also see a lone kobold, the survivor of your earlier skirmish, sitting on the floor and licking his wounds.

((Actually bchilders slowed just limits you to 2 squares speed. And Suzuro your character summary in your posts please?))

Riardon moves out of the water ((note to WillWolf: you couldn't have shifted there, so I just had you move out of the water. Standing there and shooting provokes an OA, as does moving out, but moving out is closer to what you said)) but is met with the hobgoblin's flail! ([roll0] (note: you've got +2 to AC against OAs) vs 17 for [roll1]) <placeholder> And his arrow flies true, striking the archer for 11 damage!
Skamos throws an orb of force at the other archer. He jumps over it and it shatters against the floor, but its shards pierce the first archer and the kobold!
Corrin engages the soldier! His sword slash slices into its tough skin for 11 damage!
Kathra gets out of the water and chops at the lieutenant! However, he brings his shield up to block her blow!
Tira's supernatural fire consumes the soldier for 14 damage! He is still alive, but he writhes in agony as it burns!
Erias holds up his holy symbol, and the soldier is seared by the blinding light for 15 damage! He weakly raises his flail (in an opportunity attack) but Corrin's challenge echoes, and he falls to the ground, smote by divine energy!

The lieutenant looks on, seemingly dazed by the disastrous turn of events. He barks out commands (Goblin: You two, get back and take out that halfling! and swings at Kathra with his flail! ([roll2] vs 19, for [roll3]) She manages to block his strike!

One archer draws and fires at Corrin ([roll4] vs 20 for [roll5], +2 to all allies if he hits) and hits! His arrow lodges in the paladin's armor for 6 damage!

Skamos casts his flaming orb; however, even with the wand, it flies off-course! Corrin attempts to knock an archer unconscious, but the hobgoblin nimbly evades his weapon! ((Intimidation could be used in skill challenges. Which reminds me, it is a skill challenge to interrogate or whatever. Just announce it, and I'll start the skill challenge.

FYI: Skill challenges work by, well, using your skills. Each challenge has a target number of successes and a maximum number of failures. You can use any skill as long as you justify how it is going to be relevant and useful to the current situation. You can try for Easy, Medium, or Hard difficulties (failing an Easy check gets you a -2 on the next check, while succeeding on a Hard check gets you a +2 on th next check).))

Yeah, I don't know, I think it's pretty dead. Eh, I count it as a semi-success?

Stuff:

If you want to know, you fought 2 out of 4 possible encounters (you didn't fight the kobold king and the dragon).

So, yeah. I think PbP is pretty bad for 4e. For one thing, 4e's designed so that the rounds will take less time, but there'd be more rounds. Which is kind of negated by PbP's time difference. Another thing, it's more difficult to discuss tactics and stuff (one thing that my group did the whole time). 4e's also got lots of tiny bonuses, which are hard to remember (I should be blamed for one of them, probably).

Observations: You guys rolled pretty well, actually. Barely took any damage (I mean, I count one heal two heals in the whole thing compared to a second wind per character per encounter, when I ran it) and laid some serious damage.

Suzuro
2008-05-11, 09:58 PM

Yeah, that was fun. 4ed doesn't seem bad when you give it a try. Also, I don't think it's so much 4ed's not working for PbP, more like adventures consisting primarily of combat not working there. And I honestly don't know how would skill challenges work on the forum.
