There was once a mage who secured for himself a great and magnificent boon. In his travels
‘cross the worlds, he had chanced across a mighty and capricious djinn lord, a spirit of nigh-divine power the likes of which no longer roam our world, imprisoned within a cairn of stones, apparently trapped there by some mage who the spirit had offended. This travelling magician dispelled the dweomer of binder woven into the rocks, freeing the djinn, but not before he convinced it to swear, upon the primordial powers of Light and Darkness, to serve him freely for a year and a day. The magician took the djinn to his lair, and set about experimenting on the limits of the djinn’s powers. The magician decided to test his new servant: He imposed a wish upon the djinn that it create for him a spell able to weave together the forms of man and beast. He first used this spell to merge together one of his servants and a crab, taken from the sea. The end result was a creature with the upper body of a man, but with the scuttling legs and massive claws of a crab in place of arms and legs.

This new, piteous creature was put to work guarding the djinn whenever the magician left his arcane laboratory. The man-crab was piteous in its lamentations, and eventually the djinn decided to have mercy on it, and give it a way to take revenge upon its maker. The djinn used the spell of merging to combine the man-crab with a shark held captive in the magician’s laboratory, granting it a shark’s head, and a bite powerful enough to kill the magician in a blow. When he next came to his laboratory, the servant turned on him, and bit his head off. The djinn, now freed of his vow, named the creature Qa Samak, and decided to bear it to the sea, so that it might live happily there. As a final mercy, he took a single drop of blood from the Qa Samak, and from it he created a mate, and thus the Qa Samak race has eventually multiplied to fill the ocean floor. Legends and rumors say they are almost uncontrollably violent, each one ever ready to renew the murder committed by the first Qa Samak.

Blood Frenzy (Ex)
Whenever a Qa Samak deals Constitution damage to a creature with its vicious bite ability, it goes into a blood frenzy. It gains a +4 enhancement bonus to Strength and Constitution and 20 temporary hp, but it takes a -2 penalty to AC. The frenzy lasts for a number of rounds equal to the amount of Constitution damage dealt. The durations of multiple blood frenzies stack, though the Qa Samak’s total temporary hp from blood frenzies cannot exceed 20.

Constrict (Ex)
On a successful grapple check, a Qa Samak deals 2d8+8 points of damage.

Vicious Bite (Ex)
Whenever a Qa Samak deals damage to a creature with its bite attack, that creature must make a DC 21 Fortitude save or take 1d3 Constitution damage. The save is Constitution-based.

Skills
A Qa Samak has a +8 racial bonus on any Swim check to perform some special action or avoid a hazard. It can always choose to take 10 on a Swim check, even if distracted or endangered. It can use the run action while swimming, provided it swims in a straight line.

I know arcane casters are weak against grapples... but it still might make more sense that the original one (or two) had vorpal bites because even with surprise that would help explain how it managed to kill a wizard powerful enough to free the djinn. The blood could have grown thinner over the generations, causing them to lose that ability.
