I remember seeing a feat/sorc variant that allowed sorcerers to use metamagic without upping cast time. Can anyone tell me what book this is in and the name of the feat/variant?

Metamagic specialist, PHB 2, PG 61. It costs you your familiar, though (and familiars require a bit of investment to be a benefit instead of a liability, though).

Personally, I've always been rather averse to metamagic, due to metamagic rods and the fact that you can usually get a better spell for the higher effective level, but I'm well aware that other people thing differently.

Its a sorcerer variant. You give up your familiar in the switch.

PHBII I believe.

Rapid Metamagic from Complete Mage. It requires 12 ranks in Spellcraft, if I recall correctly.

This is the one you are probably looking for.

The PHB2 variant restricts you to 3 + Int modifier uses a day, only.

Honestly, I think the variant/feat to go for strongly depends on what level you think you'll be reaching.

The complete mage feat is a bit less of a sacrifice for greater benefit, but unless you're starting at level 9+, you won't gain much from it, since up to that point it's the full round for each spell you use metamagic on.

At lower levels, the familiar loss isn't so bad anyway, since you'll often run out of good spells before you'll run out of rounds to cast them (IE imbue familiar with spell ability) and characters without focus on the familiar might be weakened by it's presence on the battlefield. In addition, the 3+int uses isn't so bad as to negate the reason for using what feats you have.

In essence, it's weak and early versus good and late, it all depends on what you'll be using it for.

There is a feat in either Races of dragons or the Dragonomicon called Accelerated Metamagic, but you had to be "dragon blooded" so its really just a waste of paper.

But all the best Sorcerers are Ancient Dragonwrought Kobolds anyway.

I've never liked familiars as written. Use the PHB II alternate sorcerer class feature to replace your little kitty with AWESOME POWER. Actually, it's only a stepping stone to awesome power, you still have to acquire the awesome power in the traditional manner.
Also! If your DM is willing to let you use the Book of Erotic Fantasy, the Metamagic Spellshaper allows you to take ABILITY DAMAGE instead of higher spell slots. Take a STR hit to cast metamagic spells, yes please.
