Songsword

Phineas watched his fellow adventurers fighting for their lives against the dreaded foe, their battle cries only serving to make him play his fiddle faster and more passionately. Soon, though, he realized that his friends needed more than music. Dropping his instrument, the little gnome dashed forward, rapier drawn, to confront the enemy head-on...

Many bards spend their lives traveling the countryside, performing for crowds or simply living out their lives journeying to nowhere in particular. Those who go on to become adventurers sometimes feel left out because of their inability to fight like their more combat-oriented compatriots. For some, this isn't what they thought adventuring might be. After spending time in the company of combat-oriented party members, some bards forsake some ability in using their music and magic in order to become more adept at (and last longer in) combat. These are the Songswords.

A Songsword maintains many of his bardic abilities, though these accrue at slower paces as he focuses more on combat ability. Indeed, they adapt melee fighting to their own style, eventually even channeling their songs and charm into combat.

Class Features:
All of the following are class features of the Songsword.

Spells per Day/Spells Known: At every even-numbered level, a songsword gains new spells per day and spells known as if he had also gained a level in whatever arcane spellcasting class he was a member before adding the prestige class. He does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained (but see below). If a character had levels in more than one arcane spellcasting class, he must decide to which class he adds the new level for the purposes of determining spells per day and spells known.

Bardic Combat Knowledge (Ex): A songsword adds one-half his class level (rounded down) to all bardic knowledge checks. Furthermore, as a songsword becomes more experienced in the combat arts, the breadth of his bardic knowledge increases. A songsword can make a bardic knowledge check to reveal information about local notable people, legendary items, or noteworthy places (as normal), or to identify and assist in fighting creatures (as normal for Knowledge checks to reveal information about creatures), even if he doesn't have ranks in the appropriate Knowledge skill. He gains a +2 synergy bonus to this check if he has 5 or more ranks in the appropriate Knowledge skill used to identify the particular creature (as described in the rules for the Knowledge skill).

Bardic Music: At every odd-numbered level, a songsword gains one extra use of his bardic music ability per day. However, his class levels do not count for the purposes of determining the bardic music abilities to which the character has access.

Channeled Song (Su): Beginning at 2nd level, a songsword can expend a number of uses of bardic music in order to gain one of the following bonuses, equal to the number of uses of bardic music expended. The bonus may not exceed twice his class level. For instance, a Bard 5/Songsword 2 may expend 4 uses of his Bardic Music to gain a +4 morale bonus to AC for a number of rounds equal to his Charisma modifier.
[tab]Channeled Defense: As a standard action, a songsword can gain a morale bonus to AC that lasts for a number of rounds equal to his Cha modifier.
[tab]Channeled Power: As a standard action, he may gain a morale bonus to attack rolls that lasts for a number of rounds equal to his Cha modifier.
[tab]Channeled Resistance: As an immediate action, he can gain a morale bonus to a single saving throw.

Mobility: At 2nd level, a Songsword gains Mobility as a bonus feat, regardless of whether or not he meets the prerequisites.

Improved Channeled Music: At 4th level, a Songsword becomes more efficient at expending his musical ability to increase his own combat ability. Any bonus from his channeled music ability is doubled, and the maximum bonus is equal to one-half his HD (rounded down). For instance, a Bard 15/Songsword 5 may expend 5 uses of Bardic Music to gain a +10 morale bonus on attack rolls for a number of rounds equal to his Charisma modifier.

Charming Strike: At 5th level, a Songsword may add his Charisma modifier to damage rolls, provided that he strikes a weapon that can be used with the Weapon Finesse feat.

This is...really well done.

Problem: not enough uses of bardic music. Have the class gain 2xlevel in uses/day.

Also, you may want to point your friend to the Dragon Shaman or the Marshal, which both can be a bard in combat, but are less social dependent.

I may find more problems later though.

Here's something he might also like, that would go along with the PrC.

Singing Blade
Cost: 5,000gp, +1 blade or better, Bard Song.
Effect: A Singing Blade may be crafted in one of three ways. It may be crafted with beneficial bard song, defensive bard song, or offensive bard song.

Beneficial Bard song causes the blade to perform as it is swung, increasing the luck and attack rolls of it's wielder by +1, and increasing their will save vs. charm type spells by two.

Defensive Bard song causes the blade to perform as long as it is drawn, usually softly and in the background, but increasing in volume and tempo as enemies approach. However, the wielder must succeed on a listen check to detect the change in the song.

Offensive Bard song is often described as nails on a chalk board. It serves to distract opponents, and anyone with in 10' of the wielder must make a concentration check when attempting to attack or cast spells. Movement actions are unaffected. The wielder is also immune to the swords effects.

Singing blades can be dual wielded, but only the Main hand weapon gives it's bonuses. Offensive Blades may force an additional concentration check to counteract countersong, at the DM's discretion. Otherwise countersong applies as normal.

Thanks!

For the uses of bardic music, I don't really remember why I only did it 3 times per day over 5 levels. Regular bards get +1 time per level, so a Bard 15/Songsword 5 is still gonna have 18 uses plus more if he took Extra Music; considering that, I don't really see why 2/level is necessary. I guess I could change it to regular rate (+1/day per level), but I'd really need a 3rd level ability and I honestly can't think of anything. Any suggestions?

Perhaps something where it can channel a bardic spell through an attack.

Bardic Strike: After the Songsword makes a successful attack with a melee weapon, he or she may simultaneously cast a spell at the same time of a spell level less than his or her class levels. He or she may only cast a number of spells equal to his or her class level per day in this manner.

Looks interesting, but have you looked at the Bladesinger PrC in C. Warr? It was basically written for the Bard, but while it doesn't increase bardic music abilities, it does pack a huge punch with the buff spells that a bard gets and increases the melee capability by a ton. The only catch is the difficult entry requirements.

Since my post got cut off...

I like the class, it's a nice feel to the usual quippy bard. Especially if it's a bard who likes to leap into battle. Giving full BAB to the bard, but not upping the casting a lot takes a different approach than most classes. A rapier bard is going to get a lot out of this class, just make sure he has weapon finesse already. Are the abilities specific to finessable weapons?

See also: Snowflake Wardance (feat, Frostburn), Crystal Echoblade (weapon, Magic Item Compendium), and Harmonizing (weapon enhancement, als MIC).

Snowflake Wardance (http://realmshelps.dandello.net/cgi-bin/feats.pl?Snowflake_Wardance,Fr), allowing you to blow a use of bardic music for +cha mod attack for a bunch of rounds.

The Crystal Echoblade adds 1/2 your bard level to damage when using a bard song (such as say, inspire courage), and costs practically nothing.

Harmonizing only costs a +1, and can continue a bard song for you for a while, so you don't have to worry about it running out in the middle of a fight, or have two going at once if you need them.

Also, a nice spell is Improvisation, from the spell compendium. It's low level, and you get a pool of bonus points equal to twice your level that you can spend to increase rolls as you need them, up to 1/2 your level each time.
