View Full Version : Is there an ACF that allows a wizard to trade away Scribe Scroll?

In one of the wizard guides I saw a mention of trading away Scribe Scroll at 1st level for Improved Initative. Does anyone know what Alternative Class Feature that is and where I can find it? I think it's something along the lines of allowing the Wizard to get Fighter Bonus feats instead of metamagic feats.

I'm pretty sure what you're talking about is this:

UA wizard variant. (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/variantCharacterClasses.htm#wizard)
It does gives away all your metamagic feats though. =/

Alternately, if you (for some reason) don't want to give up scribe scroll as a bonus feat, you can use the Diviner Specialist "Bonus Feat List" variant (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/specialistWizardVariants.htm#divinerVariants) which only replaces the metamagic.

Can I combine this with a spontaneous divination variant in Complete Champion?

Hmmmm...
Well, by the rules it would seem so. The phrasing is "the wizard bonus feats" and not "metamagic bonus feats." So even if you're getting them from the fighter pool, they're still your bonus feats to sacrifice.

Terrific. Now the question becomes: Do I want scribe scroll, or Imporved Initiative...

Depends on what you want to do. Scribe Scroll is good for utility, but remember that it takes time to scribe stuff.

Improved Initiative combined with Celerity is excellent for dueling, especially if you can kill the opponent within one round.

You could always pick up craft homunculus and make a Dedicated Wright, from Eberron. Stuff that guy in a bag of holding and let him do the scribing for you. Retrain the craft feat for something more useful.

It depends on the campaign, and how much time/gold/xp you will have. Assuming a decent amount of each: at lower levels I'd pick Scribe Scroll. At higher levels, probably Improved Initiative.

So are you saying that scribing scrolls just isn't worth it for higher level spells? Or perhaps that the money I'll be saving with scroll scribing is not equal to +4 init?

You can replace any feat with any other for a small price.

Use Embrace the Dark Chaos and then Shun the Dark Chaos to replace any feat, including Scribe Scroll and the 4 Elven weapon proficiencies, with any other feat you choose. Its cheaper if you buy the spell casting from another wizard instead of using scrolls.

Note that this is one of the cheesiest things in D&D and if your DM is actually letting you do this, you should think twice about playing in that DM's game.

Not really. Sure its cheap but when you compare it to the real cheap stuff its only minorly broken. I mean you have stuff like spontaneous divination, Incantatrix, IotSFV, CoDzilla, Astral Projection, Shapechange, etc.
