The Rules.
You Read Them!
In order to try and keep these threads from becoming unmanageable, some rules have been created, and they accent the forum rules. Please read those first.

1. Spam. For the purposes of RB one word posts should be spam everywhere. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* should also be considered spam. Quality of content trumps speed of response.
2. Ditch the "competition for control of the universe" eh. It has ceased to be funny, and often branches out into little mock battles that fall into the spam definition laid out above. We've got a PbP section for fights, and even the Town has an arena, I believe.
3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well.
4. Stop advertising other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.
5. Please stop with single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."
6. Do not poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."
7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.
8. No asking "What's the topic" or the ilk. This is *not* a conversation where you could've missed the begining, it's a forum where the current topic is nicely recorded for you. So read up a bit first.
9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.
10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.
11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details

:miko:Anyone found breaking the rules will be sent to stand in the corner and receive a very stern talking to! :miko:

Well, I went on the IRC as per the OP suggestion. It's...small. 30,000 members, and only 13 in the chat? I go to a forum of mere 8,500, and we average second biggest channel on the server! For shame, you people. Tsk tsk tsk.

Most inkblot tests are made by dripping ink on one side of a piece of paper and then folding it in half. Another interesting way to make them is to dip string in ink, let it fall onto the paper, fold the paper in half on top of it and then pull the string out.

Then again; I am wearing 7g of 9ct gold (3.5 per ear); two studs weighing 1.5g each and two earrings weighing 10g each.
That's 30g of metal. 15g on each ear.

And *commiserates with Alarra* Because earrings rock and I know the perfect cyber pair for you.

Yes, I actually have made a few for a school project, I however have no scanner at hand.
The net actually has quite a few blot generators, but non of them seems to easily convert to a sharable image type.

Now I can imagine the hilarity of a inkblot test topic where everybody is talking about a different blot I would prefer it to be the same. I probably should just get creative in paint and then copy and mirror the thing.

Ink blot tests are not necessarily ridiculous. There's a lot of information that can be gained from how people answer those. Granted, likely not as much from homemade tests, but from ones where different answers have been correlated with one another and have actually statistical and scientific findings...

My science book is officially crazy. Today while I was flipping through I saw a picture of a moose with the caption: "A radio collar helps scientists track this handsome, brown-eyed moose's movements."

Me: "..."

Then in a section about elements mentioned, "Please note the element krypton bears so resemblance to the substance kryptonite, the only thing feared by Superman!"

Yes there was an exclamation point, not even kidding.

My science book from last year also had a weird moment. An exact quote from text on viruses:

"All viruses have two basic part: an outer coat that protects the virus and an inner core made for genetic material. A virus's genetic material contains the instructions for making new viruses. Figure 20 shows the basic structure of a virus. The structure may remind you of a chocolate covered candy. The outer coat of a virus is like the chocolate on the outside of the candy. The inner core is like the gooey filling on the inside of the candy."

Just kidding!

I tried to read ASoIaF but I just couldn't get into it, I might try again, but I think I need some characters a little older that are similar to myself. Or something..

Also, my high school physics test had a great problem in it. I don't remember the exact wording, but its basically the guy has a barrel full of bricks and he is on the ground. He picks up the barrel and since its heavier than him, he goes flying up, calculate the impact force when the man and barrel meet. The barrel hits the ground and breaks, releasing the bricks (and xx kg's), now the man is the larger weight and falls to the ground, calculate the force when the man hits the barrel on the way down. Now the man is on the ground and lets go of the rope, calculate the force at which the barrel hits the man.

He shot himself in the head... and survived. He then went on to make many great contributions to chemistry... Alas, I can't remember who it was, but it was someone famous.

In all my years of keeping cats this has never happened before. Never.

But today. Three times. (Three times I tell you.) A cat has come into my lap as if for a cuddle, turned round, and sneakily sprayed urine all over me. All. Over. Me.

Three times.

Once might be a mistake, twice a misfortune, but three times is proof of a vast conspiracy to cover me in cat urine.

(And I've checked the litter trays - they're fine. And the cats are healthy and well fed, and ...there is just no rational explanation for this.)

Oh well, Emerald Rose? I have some more laundry for you. That would be three complete sets of clothing. :smallannoyed:

I know. Which is why I said or meant to say: Think Wars of the Roses. Multiply it. Then think what happens if Henry VII (or Edward IV; take your pick) is murdered by his wife. Maybe even RIchard III.
And it's such a good series. I thank my inquisitive fourteen year old brain for reading the second book first.
Dad got it free with his subscription to a magazine thing.
Then all the other books fell into my hands thanks to charity shops.

On the cat thing: Male or female? Spayed/neutered or neither? It may also be a pheremone thing with the first widdle being acciental and the others being well . . either territory or mistaken identity.
I know cats are very sensitive as to their territory and their litter boxes.

I tend to think of it as "What if Richard III hadn't taken the throne from his nephew", so Richard III is Ned, Jauffre is Edward V etc.

Arya's sister is my least favourite character because she's so bland. Your stereotypical spoilt brat; even though she is chaning throughout the series. What with the fact the Littlefinger's practically teaching her politics and, you now, about real life.

In any city, in any country, go to any mental instituion or halfway house in you can get yourself to. When you reach the front desk, ask to visit someone who calls himself "The Holder of the End". Should a look of child-like fear come over the workers face, you will then be taken to a cell in the building. It will be in a deep hidden section of the building. All you will hear is the sound of someone talking to themselves echo the halls. It is in a language that you will not understand, but your very soul will feel unspeakable fear.

Should the talking stop at any time, STOP and QUICKLY say aloud "I'm just passing through, I wish to talk." If you still hear silence, flee. Leave, do not stop for anything, do not go home, don't stay at an inn, just keep moving, sleep where your body drops. You will know in the morning if you've escaped.

If the voice in the hall comes back after you utter those words continue on. Upon reaching the cell all you will see is a windowless room with a person in the corner, speaking an unknown language, and cradling something. The person will only respond to one question. What happens when they all come together?

The person will then stare into your eyes and answer your question in horrifiying detail. Many go mad in that very cell, some disappear soon after the meeting, a few end their lives. But most do the worst thing and look upon the object in the person's hands. You will want to as well. Be warned, if you do your death will be that of cruelity and unrelenting horror.

Your death will be in that room, by that person's hands.

This object is 1 of 538. They must never come together. Never.

The next time you're alone in your room, turn down the lights. Think of something on your body that varies in length, such as hair. It must be clearly viewable from your perspective. Grab a ruler and, looking in the mirror, quickly grab a hair at random; you must confuse it. Hold it in position as best you can and note the length. Look down. Yours will be different.

Don't look back up.

Don't turn your back to that mirror ever again.

A few years ago, a mother and father decided they needed a break, so they wanted to head out for a night on the town. They called their most trusted babysitter. When the babysitter arrived, the two children were already fast asleep in bed. So the babysitter just got to sit around and make sure everything was okay with the children. Later that night, the babysitter got bored and went to watch TV, but she couldn't watch it downstairs because they did not have cable downstairs (the parents didn't want children watching too much garbage). So, she called them and asked them if she could watch cable in the parent's room. Of course, the parents said it was ok, but the babysitter had one final request... she asked if she could cover up the angel statue outside the bedroom window with a blanket or cloth, at the very least close the blinds, because it made her nervous. The phone line was silent for a moment, and the father who was talking to the babysitter at the time said, "Take the children and get out of the house... we will call the police. We do not have an angel statue."

The police found all three of the house occupants dead within three minutes of the call. No angel staue was ever found.

The last one actually gave me the creeps, be it real or not.

Mordokai: Eh. I have been to mental institutions. Architecturally speaking, they're just about the least intimidating buildings you can possibly imagine. I would have a hard time taking an untold horror seriously if it were sitting in a cheery white room surrounded by potted plants and soothing watercolors. I also have a hard time picturing a suitably spooky cell existing within a five-mile radius of those places. They're basically designed like nursing homes.

The best loony bin I have ever been in was designed by the famous architect Frank Gehry. The windows were huge. I used to get up every morning and translate poetry while watching the most incredible sunrises over the city. There was also this skylight - I would sit and watch the clouds and the birds for hours.

Technically. The point is that I won't have to pay for it until I have a stable job and a salary. That is, not living off my parents anymore.

Thats how most student loans work as well ;)

On the topic of mental institutions... I really want a padded room (really soft pillow like padding) with a large trampoline as the floor. Then I can bounce of walls and all that jazz! I just think that would be fantastic...

Correct conjugation of alumn.. interesting.. I assumed that only Greeks knew this ;) (in the fraternity/sorority sense).

The following is a rant about homework. You know when you start, and you look at the problem of which it says, do 'this'. Well 'this' is something that I don't know how to do and although the book is good for the topic, the 'this' part is something assumed from past education. Well guess what 'this' is something I still dont EFFIN know. Argh! Its frustrating, especially when its the first part for the setup of the problem! I can't just skip it and come back, NO! Its. the. first. question.... It wouldn't be that bad either if it weren't part of a homework assignment that as a whole takes HOURS!.... Sometimes I just want to slam my fist and beat a wall or something. Luckily I still have video games where I can vent frustration... as long as I do well... /rant...

It's true the new mental hospitals are actually aesthetically-pleasing, but the old ones used to be fairly creepy. Ever see Session 9 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Session_9)? Very spooky film, you should check it out. Also, there used to be a mental hospital in the town where I lived which had been converted into a continuing care facility. Most of it was closed off, and let me tell you, the abandoned portions were fairly creepy. And the less said about the underground tunnels running under the place .... God help you if the power went out when you were down there ...

@V: Sorry, you're right, I meant to say "continuing care." I should probably stop drinking so much.

Alarra

Actually, palliative care isn't the same as what you're describing. That's assisted living or nursing homes. Palliative care is a hospice, where people come because there's nothing to be done to treat them anymore and they want someone to make them comfortable while they wait to die.

Sigh. Damn it Mordokai. I read this when you first posted it, and it sent shivers up my spine, but I didn't really think anything of it. Now...I try to go to sleep...alone, in my dark apartment, with a kitchen that makes strange noises and am so completely freaked out that I can't sleep. I keep imaging a statue being outside my window and I can't even see any of my windows from this room, which is making me even more creeped out. And I keep looking at my mirror and wanting to measure my hair, but knowing that would freak me out even more. I swear I used to read horror books before bed, I don't know what's become of me. Actually, no...I've always been like this. I'd finish a dean koontz novel and then have to read an entire romance novel before I could fall asleep. Sadly, the only romance novel I have here is out in my car.

An angel statue? GET OUT OF THE HOUSE! RUN!!!!

....

:smallconfused: I just find it amusing that it was the sign on doom. And that the reaction wasn't, 'What angel statue? You know my wife collects those little ceramic kid statues they sell on the shopping network. I try to get to stop but she just thinks they are so adorable....'

On a more 'I feel for you' note, I used to love horror stories. The only ones that ever worked on me though were the 'the call is coming from inside the house', 'the truck driver was flashing the lights because the killer was in the back seat of the car', 'the hook made scraping noises on the door' and 'black dog hairs were found on his dead body'. Oddly, those affected me enough that I am now subsequently creeped out remembering them. :smalleek:

Tangent:

I used to read whatever I could on car trips. One time I was in my Godparents car and had forgotten reading material. I was pretty young at the time and decided to read my god brothers horror book. There were little one or two page clips about different monsters. I kinda laughed at all of them, none really seeming scary to me, when I came across the Vampire. It was my first exposure to the idea and that version was the kind where they leave at night to collect hearts in glass jars. A rather small division of the mythos. Anyways, I was instantly transfixed. I loved the idea and was scared out of my mind. Thus began my life long vampire interest. Though the 'keeping a wooden state at the side of my bed because the vampires watch me while I try to sleep' stage lasted a lot longer than it should have. I don't think the pioneer village folks figured their wooden stake making activity would be put to that use. Though I can't remember why you would make one otherwise.

You might be interested to know that old methods for dealing with pesky ghosts included pinning them underground with a stake... As that little snippet in my book says (quoted, but from memory only), "walking near a lonely stake in a desolate field, you might hear a faint voice wafting up from below the ground: "I'll push... and you pull.""

Oh, my favourite ghost stories, from that same book! They go something like this:

"Waking up in the dark late at night a man reached for a match... and one was put in his hand."

A man was staying at a friend's house. His friend's servant (or someone) mentioned that his room was reputedly haunted, but he laughed it off. Getting into bed, though, he felt the night pressing on him. So he got up, looked under the bed, examined the wardrobe and draws, checked out in the hall, then locked the door and turned out the light. As he lay in bed in the dark, a tiny voice whispered from the vicinity of the inkstand with satisfaction, "Ah, now we're shut in for the night."

I'm in an art school. We keep our sanity by keeping the subject off of anything art-related unless there is a competent mental health professional present.

Oh, and can I sig you on that one?

Zeb The Troll
2008-03-27, 05:23 AM
Okay, Zeb is officially "tired". Just in case anyone was wondering.

I finally got ineternet and TV at the new house yesterday, so that's good. The installers left shortly after noon. From noon to 9pm I was only able to drift off for a nap that lasted about 30 minutes before I had to get up and start getting ready for work.

The reason? I'm afraid I might be allergic to my new pets. I've not had pets as an adult and so haven't been confined in a building with them for days at a time until now. Now I have a basset hound and a long haired cat. I spend all my time sniffling and wheezing and sneezing. I don't want to get rid of the poor dears, but I'm not sure what options are available. Of course I need to verify my suspicions by going to a doctor and getting tested. But what happens if my fears are confirmed? When I was a kid my sister had some bad allergy problems and she had to get shots to be able to function normally in the world around her. As a man in my mid to late 30's, that prospect does not appeal to me at all.

But that was 25 years ago. Are there solutions out there now that don't involve weekly shots or simply pumping myself full of Benadryl for the rest of my life?

You raise a valid point. Perhaps I should confine all artists and intellectuals to small compounds where they can interact with eachother and progress science and learning. Perhaps I should force them to teach the rising generation both useful and esoteric knowledge to earn their daily bread.

I'm allergic to long haired cats and all dogs, and have been for 15 years or so, and I'm afraid I've never found a way around it. I have allergy tablets for when I'm going to be around such creatures, but I've never been able to keep anything like that as a pet, it's just sneezes and rashes continuously for me until I give up.

As for solutions I honestly don't know. Standard allergy tablets work for a while, but living with something you're allergic too....I really don't know if there's anything that can put a stop to it. :smallfrown:

It's a shame, I like animals, but I can't keep anything bigger than a Guinea Pig!

That wouldn't be a good idea, many great scientists and artists throughout the history were solitary individuals not very happy with their social lives. Confining them all together would probably result in the creation of groups that would possibly prevent the development of one's thoughts and ideas in a different direction.

On the other hand, I believe Athens was such a place, up to an extent. In the Childhood's End, a book by Arthur C. Clarke I've read recently, modern-day Athens is formed in a time of peace brought by the superintelligent alien race. It was supposed to be a moderate-sized city/town where children would attend art and science schools from their early ages, where the goal of each citizen would be to excel in a form of art/science, released from the strains of slavery and other issues the original Athens had. Now that could work...not a single building  .

Mordokai, I hate you.

This sounds stupid now, but yesterday I was scared!

The story I found really scary was the mirror one. Because earlier that day, I had looked at my mirror and saw myself blink. (I was sleepy and forgot about it til I read that story)

I was alone here when I read it, it was 2 am, I had a mirror right next to me and was trying not to look at it. :smalleek:

I tried to sleep, but was thinking all this scary stuff and couldn't relax. I got scared with every little noise. (why are there no noises when I'm up and the lights are on?:smallannoyed: )

So, I got a stupid dream, a black shadow/fog with claws getting out of the small mirror above my bed, to drag me in. Then I heard someone breathing next to my ear, and woke up. I was so scared!

Then I convinced myself that it was just myself breathing anxiously in my sleep, so I kinda woke myself up. ( I still have the feeling that I actually heard someone else)

It took me like half an hour to relax again, and when that happened, I feel my bed shaking, with a VMMMM noise.:smalleek:
I'm lucky I didn't get a heart attack.
I had forgotten to turn my cellphone off, and someone was calling me. My phone first vibrates and then rings.

I've always been freaked out by mirrors at the edge of my vision, this is only going to make things worse. And I had an experience at primary school that makes me shiver when I read the angel statue one...thanks a lot I thought I was over that!

Seriously, my primary svhool backed onto a graveyard, it was enough to give anyone the heebie jeebies. And yes, there was an angel statue in there....:smalleek:

I figured someone'd have that reaction, despite her having a great voice, hence why I included the Meatloaf (and original) version.

My uni is like 5 min. on foot from the closest bus station. You have to walk through a path in a small forest, and there is a graveyard there too.:smalltongue:
Some lessons end at night, and the only way out is this path.:smalltongue:

Also: I always see weird things at "the edge of my vision"(?) (this is how you call it?)

I see too much stuff that it's just not there.
It's my imagination. I may see a slight move, and think I saw an old man moving next to me. But nothing's there, so I got used to it and ignore it.

I like the second version a lot better, that song is much better as a duet.

On top of that, it was originally written for him. Not to be confused with being the original version, it was set to the side and Celine Dion found it during that time and put it out before Bat out of Hell III was released.

Probably one of the few songs where an artist ended up covering a song that they were supposed to do originally.

@Banjo: I love graveyards. When my best friend came down for a sleepover we spent a good hour in two graveyards and then went looking for an abandoned one behind a pub in a village about three - six miles away. Abandoned since the 1600s because of plague and cholera. And also: the pub used to be the school.
Couldn't find it though because I got the directions mixed up.

Good story about the place:
When Mum was about fifteen she and a dozen or so friends and family were in the graveyard looking around and they found graves from the fourteenth century. The air was tense and stickily silent (you know the type) and even though it was a scorching summer the air was chill.
Stephen (friend, not brother) was looking at a childs' grave from the 1200s when all of the teenagers looked up at the precise same moment; they even looked at the same spot.
They fled simultaneously and didn't stop until they were by the new school.
The spot they stared at was about five feet to Stephen's left and at ground level.
When they'd plucked up enough courage to go back (ten minutes later - what foolhardy people) they found some graves dating right back to the Norman Conquest if not before. They were so weatered all they could make out was An_o D_ _ in_ 10__ on two of them. They were so hidden by grass and weeds they hadn't even noticed them.
Needless to say when they saw the date they legged it.
Never went back there. All of them were terrified.

EDIT: @Roguey: It's peripheral vision.

Yeah, I always get things moving on the edge of my vision, when you move your head they go. I know it's just my eye's playing up....but when it's dark, or you're out alone in the middle of no-where, it's not so easy to convinvce yourself!

Especially when you're 10 years old, standing in the graveyard behind your school on a cold winters night in complete darkness. :smalleek: That is one dare that I seriously regret, though I know it was just imaginations running wild in a setting that was conducive to it. I've never liked them since, though I use them enough in roleplaying to scare the crap out of my players !:smalltongue:

Now I game in a hall next to a graveyard. Fine normally, but at 1 in the morning when there are only three of us outside talking and the weird sounds start....it can make me worry. The church there is known to be haunted, and the bells are supposed to chime on there own from time to time. It happened once when we were out there on our own, and like the three cowards we are it was straight into the cars and away!

EDIT; I don't half love scary stories and real life experiences that people talk about, but it scares me all the same! Curly, I know I woul;dn't have gone straight back for all the tea in China! And there is probably a lot of that there...

When I come to a meetup eventually (before I'm 30 :smallamused: ) I will visit that church.
I love ghosts and am an amateur ghost hunter.

And sadly, the most likely explanation for the 'haunted bells' is the wind, bats or animals roosting in the tower and setting them ringing accidentally.

ONE MORE EDIT!: They were teenagers. It was summer and I'd do the same. But then again, I am the batty one. Or so the family says.

Well, Stourbridge is quite a haunted place. I've heard all those explanations before, but it's an old church with real original bells in it, and they were going off in a proper rythm rather than randomly...unless the vicar was ringing them with the lights off then I'm at a loss.

Grandma's house was haunted. Mom and her 16 (or was more, I can't even remember how many uncles and aunts I have) sibblings saw and heard things there. So did I. It was a fun place.

Later she moved to an old big house at the side of the city main cemitery. It was also fun.

Carillion is right out, the church doesn't have the cash to put proper toilets in the hall so they wouldn't be getting one of those. It was just a tuneful clangour, I've been passed there during the day and it was a very similar kind of doleful tune. Kids however is more likely, though whether they have the opposable thumbs required to grab a pull-rope is another matter!

Most scary was in the graveyard with the angel statue. It was well known at school that everyone was convinced that it moved when people weren't looking, and my own experiences seemed to check out that theory. Myself and two friends went back there on a freezing November night for a dare, and let's just say that we got tremendously worked up and scared out of our wits. We exited the graveyard a few minutes later, screaming and running like we were being chased by the devil himself! I can't explain anything that happened for certain, I can see now 12 years later that it would all have been explainable through tricks of torchlight and just being hyped up with adrenaline, but still.....

That was #1 by a million miles, and I still get goosebumps thinking about it now! :smalleek:

And what's Blink and why's it so scary?

It was an episode of Dr. Who. And (in most people's opinion) the best of the series. All about crazy aliens who turn to stone when you look at them, so they can't die. Then send you back in time so you 'live to death'. Basically, lots of creepy angel statues moving really quickly when you're not looking. So don't blink. Don't look away. Don't. Blink.

I can't say I really know much about ghosts. But I quite like graveyards, they're quiet. And old houses are lovely, I find the creaking soothing.

As a nice addition to our spooky stories, here are some myths from in and around my hometown! Just for fun, and written with a journalistic slant, so I'd take them with a dose of salt if I were you. The Gibbet Lane one is of some note locally

The Ghost of Gibbet Lane, Stourbridge

Gibbet Lane is a short cut between Stourbridge and Kinver and has been used for many centuries. Strange, creepy sounds are said to haunt the underbrush that lies on both sides of the lane. Trees creak and groan in the wind and the scurrying of night creatures also break the stillness. People have reported uneasy feelings. They feel like they are being followed by something sinister and strange that haunts the night.

In times gone by, the bones of cutpurses and murderers hung in chains along the road. Their mortal remains left hanging for months; a fatal warning to others contemplating a criminal career.

The gibbet post was driven into the ground at the exact spot where William Howe was shot and robbed by a wealthy local farmer, Benjamin Robins, on a winter’s night in 1812. It was market day in nearby Stourbridge. Mr Robbins was wearing a well-filled money-belt, having sold some sheep. He had celebrated the sale in the near by Nag’s Head hostelry, before setting off on foot to his farm in Dunsley.

The victim was a tough individual. After being robbed and left for dead, he managed to stagger home leaving a trail of blood in the snow. He lived for ten days before dying on 28th December. On his deathbed he gave a description of his attacker.

His brother was quick to react. He rode to Stourbridge and ordered one hundred “Wanted” posters. The crime caused such a sensation that the famous Bow Street Runners, Harry Adkins and Sam Taunton (ace detectives of their time), were brought in by the local magistrate in a determined effort to bring the robber to justice.

They interviewed many locals which paid the dividends. Thomas Bates reported that he had noticed a suspicious character lurking in bushes. He described a man wearing a tricorn hat, a dark riding coat and carrying a pair of pistols stuck into his belt. Others reported similar sightings.

The investigators followed the trail and discovered their quarry was a servant of the Marchioness of Downshire, by the name of William Howe. He had some instinct that the Bow Street Runners were on his trail as he packed his bags and left without giving notice.

But Mr Howe was finally apprehended at the Castle and Falcon pub in London. He was sent in irons to Stafford Gaol to await trail. When on trial, after a mere seven minutes the verdict of “guilty” was reached and the sentence of hanging by the neck until dead (and then being cut down and dissected and anatomised) was carried out within 48 hours.

However, when the verdict was announced, the attending Stourbridge magistrate immediately applied for the body to be released to them and hung in chains near the sport where the crime took place. Recent murders in Kidderminster, Bridgenorth and on Whittington Common resulted in the request being granted as a warning to others.

Vast crowds gathered to witness the arrival of the body and follow the procession. The body was suspended in chains “for the moral benefit of the local population.”

The corpse swayed in the breeze for many months and was little more than a skeleton when it was stolen at night by a local surgeon, who felt his profession had been cheated from using the body for medical advancement.

The legend of William Howe became widely circulated and sightings of the phantom started to occur regularly during the last century. Howe’s spirit has been reported to appear as a malicious figure which glides rather than walks. One witness, who claimed to have lashed out at the spectre in fright, says he stumbled back after his stick passed straight through the ghostly apparition.

Equally disturbing encounters with the spectral shade of William Howe continued to emerge regularly in the local press. The old tale was enlivened once more in 1908, when a skeleton with a rusty dagger protruding from its rib cage was discovered near the ‘old gibber tree.’ It is now speculated that William Howe is not the only lonely shadow haunting the old lane.

The most recent investigation into the Gibbet Lane phenomena took place in December 1975, when three paranormal researchers hailing from Dudley kept a four-night vigil in the vicinity of William Howe’s haunting. Bill Oddy, Kevin Stokes and Roy Banks took scientific equipment and spent the December nights searching for paranormal activity. In a summary of their findings, they explained how they heard eerie tapping sounds, shared the feeling of being followed or being invited to follow a presence, and witnessed a black, human form crossing the lane.

But the researchers concluded that, due to their lack of convincing evidence, the surrounding countryside around Gibbet Lane is at peace. Perhaps the spirits are finally at rest...

Wombourne’s Phantom Riders

In 1960, a human corpse was discovered in the forest that lies about a mile outside of Himley village. The body was unidentified. Local people had spoken for years about strange goings-on in the part of the wood called by youngsters as “The Haunted Swamp.” People had felt an air of mystery and of foreboding in this quagmire that bubbled ominously like the lair of some departed animal.

It was described as a desperate spot for any man to die. Altogether, it was a place of utter desolation.

A few cigarette ends, ashes from a fire and discarded bottle tops surrounded the hollow where the body had been discovered. The tramp’s shelter was located close to the bog and a series of bubbles rose to the surface as if “something” stirred below.

It was not long before locals began to link the tramp’s demise with the local legend of the ‘Phantom Rider.’ The legend refers to the Midland connection with the infamous Gunpowder Plot against King James I in 1605. Although most of us are aware of the plot and its outcome, not so many people outside of the Midlands are aware of the scenes played out at Holbeche House, near Kingswinford.

Stephen Littleton, a relative of the lords of Hagley, had ridden to his house at Holbeche after the plot went horribly wrong and Guy Fawkes had been captured. With him rode Ambrose Rookwood, Robert Catesby, John and Robert Winters. With a retinue of servants and a wagon filled with gunpowder, they had crossed the River Stour, determined to make a last stand at Holbeche. While inside, the plotters built a large fire to dry out the sodden gunpowder. What happened then is easily predicted.

Stephen Lyttleton and Robert Winter managed to escape in the confusion and disappear into nearby Pensnett Chase. A young groom of Lyttleton’s, Gideon Grove, was severely wounded after fighting alongside his master. Although his clothes were alight and he was wounded in the throat, he managed to climb on to a terror-stricken horse, dash through the fire, smoke and the cordon of men-at-arms, and fled into Himley Wood.

But the fugitive was caught and killed by the pursuers, his body sinking into the dank and miry bog. Quickly, a legend was created that. On the anniversary of that eventful night, awakened from his murky grave by the pyrotechnics of November 5th, Gideon Grove rises up to re-enact his ghastly ride. Hoof-beats in the night, broken fences and trampled wheat, have long been accepted as evidence of the legend by a dwindling farming community.

Sightings of the Phantom Rider include an eyewitness who spoke of a glow in the sky in the direction of Holbeche House. They saw a rider dressed in black thigh-length riding boots, a dark velvet coat and a cocked hat mounted on a dappled grey horse, apparently travelling some three feet above the surface of the road as he passed the witness on his bike ride home.

Another eyewitness reported feeling scared to death when she was riding her motorcycle late at night. She told the local newspaper that it felt as if she were caught in the middle of a great stampede, as the noise of thundering hooves was all around her. Nothing, however, has ever been seen.

Could the tramp have been a witness? Was he unable to recount his terrible vision as he was physically frightened to death by what he saw?

The White Hart Inn, Walsall

The White Hart Inn at Caldmore Green, Walsall, has long been infamous for its hauntings. In the year of 1870, a gentleman cleaning the property came across a mummified child’s arm and a Cromwellian sword in the attic. These macabre discoveries are reported to have been relics of an old black magic ritual, and it is said that those bold enough to spend a night in the Inn’s attic have to endure sleepless nights. Footsteps and shrill pitched cries have been heard and a recent landlord, deciding to investigate the disturbance, found a small handprint on a dust-covered tabletop. The attic had been empty and locked for many evenings.

Even more recently, a licensee’s wife awoke during her stay in the attic bedroom to see a white apparition bend over her bedside. Mediums have identified the phantom as the spirit of an 18th century girl who committed suicide in the Inn. It is still unsure if her death was connected with the discovery of the infant remains in 1870.

Interesting, but nothing too strange, I guess everywhere has similar stories floating around.

Not bad.
But you foget where I'm from.

Jamaica Inn and all of Bodmin Moor: haunted.

Dolphin Inn

The Dolphin Inn in Penzance has a long and interesting history, reputedly including amongst its visitors Sir Walter Raleigh and Judge Jeffries .

Judge Jeffries the notorious "Hanging Judge" is said to have held court in the dinning room, after the Duke of Monmouth's rebellion.

On a more mysterious note anomalous footsteps, sounding on floorboards have been heard walking along a carpeted upstairs corridor and descending stairs. An apparition of a young man has also been seen who melted away.

One of the rooms in particular is said to be haunted, in the past the bed has been found to have been slept in although the room was empty.

Truro Haunted.
In a field on the outskirts of the town chain rattling spectres have been heard, on the site of the towns gibbet.

Gibbets were often places associated with hauntings in the past, especially black dogs, which were seen as the spirits of the hanged. A great deal of folklore built up about them over the years, which we will be examining in the future.

And this little map (http://www.mysteriousbritain.co.uk/england/cornwall.html) shows just how haunted the place is. And note that Cornwall gets its own page.

I used to live about two minutes away from the Merry Maidens by the way.
A local legend says that although there are nineteen of them you will never count eighteen.
I tried this only last summer whe I went back there with y aunt. She stood as a marker by one of the stones so I wouldn't count the same one twice.
I went around eight times. I got: 20; 18; 18; 18; 14 (); 16; 21 () and 17.
Witnessed by themarker who was certain I never counted the same one or missed out a stone.
We also heard pipe music coming from the directio of the Pipers. No music was being played. No houses nearby and no festival at the time either.

Do I dear post another scary story? Lets see. On one side, Rogue will probably kill me in most painful way imaginable. On the other, she will probably be to scared to come out to get me. So sure, I dare!

A young coed was returning from a night out with her friends and she didn't want to disturb her sleeping roomate, so she crept into the room and found her way in the darkness, undressed and slid into bed. The next morning as she awoke and turned to say something to her friend, she saw her mangled body on the blood-soaked bed, and written in her roomate's blood on the wall were the words: "AREN'T YOU GLAD YOU DIDN'T TURN ON THE LIGHT?"

***

This next one will probably really gie you the creeps. As I'm nice guy, I'll give you fair warning. DON'T read it if you have faint heart. It's similar to the one above, but for some reason I find it more disturbing.

A young girl is left home alone with only her dog to protect her. When night approaches, she locks all the doors and tries to lock all the windows but one won't close.

She decides to leave it unlocked and goes to bed. Her dog takes its customary place under her bed.

In the deep of night she awakens to a dripping sound coming from the bathroom. The girl is too scared to go check so she reaches her hand under the bed. She feels a reassuring lick from her dog and falls back to sleep. She reawakens to the dripping sound, reaches her hand down to the dog where she feels the reassuring lick and falls back to sleep. Once more she awakens to the dripping sound. She reaches her hand down and feels the lick of her dog.

Now curious about the dripping sound, she gets up and slowly walks towards the bathroom, the dripping sound getting louder as she approaches. She reaches the bathroom and turns on the light. She is greeted by a horrific sight; hanging from the shower nozzle is her dog with its throat slit open and its blood dripping into the bathtub.

Something on the bathroom mirror catches her eye she turns around. Written on the bathroom mirror in her dog's blood are the words "HUMANS CAN LICK TOO".

Urban legend no. 1 from cos:
The Little One on the Road.

A guy I worked with told me this story, he swore it was true...

I was driving up towards Prescott, Arizona, my girlfriend, Becky, dozing off in the seat next to me. Rolling the window partially down, in the hope that the cool air would keep me alert, I wearily kept driving my Chevy down this narrow highway road, with nothing but a thick forested area on the passenger side of me, and mostly open meadowland, with a few clumps of trees here and there, along the driver's side of the road. I had wanted to leave first thing in the morning on Friday, but Becky was called into work at the last minute, so we ended up leaving at close to eight o'clock that night. Knowing we had to head back before early Monday, I didn't want to wait until the next day to go and end up losing a good chunk of a Saturday to boot.

So here I was, it had to be close to at least ten pm by then. Driving by the light of my dim headlights, with a close to full moon overhead (full enough to see the open expanses of the passing meadow areas, anyway) I noticed some smoke or steam coming up from the sides of my car hood. This, in and of itself, was not unusual as the car was close to fifteen years old, dented up a bit, with dimmer than usual lights and hoses that seemed to know the most inopportune time to break. Add to that, a radiator that overheated during the summer months or when in use for long periods of time. This being early October, I hadn't given the radiator much thought - it hadn't bothered to act up since August, and as the saying goes 'out of sight, out of mind'. But something sure was putting off plumes under the hood, so I nudged Becky and explained in short that I had to pull over.

As I slowed down a bit, Becky rolled down her window and peered out along the edges of the dark wall of pine trees. "Up there," she exclaimed, pointing forward, "about twenty feet or so there's a dirt shoulder of some kind." Slowing to a crawl, feeling safe at the moment as another car hadn't passed us for a number of miles now, I quickly saw the flat, dirt indent, about the length and width of two cars, just to the right of the road. The dirt area, much like that whole side of the road, was lined by a knotted mass of trees, giving it the look of a half circle cut down the middle by the road. I pulled over, and turned the car off - leaving the keys hanging from the ignition. With the headlights on, I got out of the car and walked to the front of it, popping the hood. I had grabbed a flashlight out of the glove box, and so proceeded to inspect the damage.

Sure enough, the radiator had overheated. I bent down a little, to peek between the crack of the hood's bottom edge and the top of the car front, to look at Becky through the front windshield. I was going to call out, to ask her to grab the gallon bottle of water I kept behind the front seat (there since August, at least) so, once it cooled a bit, I could add water to the radiator.

Expecting to see her dozing off, or looking toward me, I was surprised to see her staring wide-eyed, mouth agape, out at the direction of the driver's side window. She was as white as a ghost. "What are you doing?" I demanded to know. She kept staring out at the meadow fields, only raising her arm slightly to point in the direction she was looking. "What?" I said, walking back towards the driver's door. As I did, I looked out into the moonlit meadow. I saw a short line of trees in the distant background, a small pine about 20-25 ft out, directly in line with the back end of the car, and, running about ten feet from that point forward, in a line almost parallel with the road, was a short brick wall, about three feet or so high. A sparse forested area began, about forty feet or so from the wall's edges, in either direction of the small meadow. "So?" I said, "Probably part of an old house, or a fence. What's the big deal about the wall?" As I got into the car, and shut the door to wait for the innards to cool, she replied - slowly, quietly - "It isn't the brick wall. It's what I saw looking at us OVER the top of the wall." I turned to her, "What? Quit screwing around." "Stuff you!" she said, "If I..." Then she stopped talking, and her gaze drifted past me, to the wall.

I turned to look. I saw a small translucent-white stocky humanoid form, just shy of three feet tall, its tiny round eyes from this distance appearing as black as night, standing in front of the wall. It slowly took a step or two towards us, its short chubby arms at its side. I screamed, and tried to turn on the flashlight. I knew the batteries were low, and sometimes had to jiggle it and turn the cap slightly to get it to work, so in my excitement I twisted the cap, the batteries flew out and I just about dirtied by pants. As the batteries were now rolling under the seat and across the floor of the car, I decided to forget that. I looked up, saw the hood was still up, and froze.

"He's going back," Becky then said. I looked out over the moonlit field again, just in time to see this....thing... scamper around the side of the wall, out of view. As Becky quickly rolled up her car window, I said I was going to shut the hood - to hell with the water, if the radiator didn't burn out we'd stop down the road and add water. "Give me the bottle. I'll dump some in the reservoir and shut the hood, you just start the car." Becky replied. As she got out and went to the front, I turned the key. The engine groaned, trying to turn over. I looked from the steering wheel, to Becky pouring some water into the reservoir, to the wall, and back again. As Becky slammed the hood shut, I looked towards the wall - to see the small, white head of the ghostly entity peering over the top of it.

"Get in the car!" I yelled, as the entity's tiny hands gripped the top of the wall, and it hoisted itself clean over - landing on its feet, running. Running towards us. Becky jumped in the passenger side, locking her door. She no longer had the bottle, which couldn't have been more than half empty now, but, under the circumstances, I didn't ask and I didn't care. I turned the key, still it wouldn't catch. "Oh, god!" Becky murmured. I didn't want to look. I turned the key again, still just that tired groan. Becky leaned over, reaching past me, hitting my door lock with one hand while rolling the window up with the other (it was one of those older, manual window knob rollup jobs). "Hurry!" she said, frightened, as she sat back up. With one more turn of the key, the car finally started, and as I punched the accelerator, I looked toward the field. That little thing was only a few feet from the edge of the road - the edge on the OTHER side of the road, thankfully, but close enough that I could see its eyes were, indeed, dark, empty holes, its mouth was open now, in a wide leering grin, and I could have sworn it had small pointed teeth but it all happened so fast. Its skin, or surface, seemed to be rolling, as the entire entity ran at my car.

As we headed down the road, I turned my rear view mirror in such a way I could see "it" - quite a bit back now, turning away from us, walking alongside the road in the opposite direction. I watched the road ahead. Then, Becky screamed. She had been half turned, looking back at the entity too. Now, she was bent straight over, her head buried in her hands. I turned my rear view mirror to and fro, but only saw the road - "it" was gone.

We drove another twenty minutes or so with the car smoking a small portion of the way. The car overheated again as we entered the outskirts of town, only then would Becky let me stop. As we parked and waited at the first gas station we hit, I asked what had happened. "I was watching it, it stopped at the edge of the road." she answered. "I know," I said, "I saw it walking away." "Yeah," she answered "it was walking away. But as it walked away, its head turned all the way around, still grinning, and it watched us drive away." Needless to say, when we headed back we left at 10.00 am, to be sure we'd get back LONG before nightfall.

And the two you mentioned are there as well.

Radikalskippy, at one point in the Ghostbuster movie, one of the 'busters comments that they basically have unlicensed nuclear accelerators on their backs.

It's been years since I last saw the Ghostbuster movies, so I don't remember that. Well, now I know those thingies in their backs are unlicensed nuclear accelerators.

One of the more frightening spirits I've ever heard of is the Wendigo, which was well-known to the Indian tribes here in Canada. The Wendigo is a spirit that supposedly appears as a fifteen-foot tall decaying corpse whose flesh is stretched tight over its bones. Its countenance is not what is frightening, however; the wendigo can possess people and fill them with an undeniable hunger for human flesh. The wendigo most often surfaced in times of hardship when food is scarce, and humans who have previously resorted to cannibalism are the most susceptible to it. Suicide was a preferable option to being possessed by a wendigo, and many of those who were killed themselves.

There's at least one famous case of a wendigo possession that I know of. About an hour's drive from where I live an Indian trapper named Swift Runner was hanged after supposedly being possessed by a wendigo when he ran out of food. Despite being only 25 miles away from a nearby fort where he could gain access to emergency supplies, Swift Runner was compelled not only to butcher his wife, but all of his five young children, and eat them...

Nice, but not really scary. And I've heard too many variations on the wendigo story.
I may hold a competition where people try to scare me by telling ghost stories.
But I wish I could remember the story about the Scandinavian baies exposed to die or the one where that Swedish (?) woman goes to attend Christmas Mass but finds out that the Mass was attended by those who had died.
Or the one about what happens to children who are unbaptised and die.

I learned a valuable lesson today: Never buy a mouse from the people who made your refrigerator.

I got a new computer mouse about a month ago, and it worked perfectly well until now. What happened? Well, all of a sudden, it starts failing! It sounds like it's being disconnected and reconnected all the time, and all of a sudden, Windows says it can't recognize it anymore because it's Malfunctioning. I'm not sure if I can blame it on the computer, which is filled with virus, but I think it's mostly the fact that it's a mouse from General Electric, the people who made the fridge again.

Anyone have any ideas on how to make it work? Or should I just throw it out and start getting a new one? (If so, what's a good brand?)

I had an awesome dream a few nights ago. Some of you may know about the guy in Honduras who starved a dog for "Modern Art", there was a thread on it here. Pretty sick, but it spawned this dream...

At the zoo near my house, they had taken a bunch of kittens and were starving them. Fortunately, I knew a way to sneak into their cage so I could feed them. I snuck in, but the only thing I had to feed them was gummi worms. Most of them ate the worms, but one couldn't because he was diabetic. Later he decided he needed the food enough to warrant eating it. (Whaaa? Diabetic cats? My brain is broken) After I left, I saw a few of them had followed me home, then I woke up.

All in all one of my better dreams.

Another scary dream: for the third time in less than a year I've dreamt about a place called Bloddenbury or Bredonbury*; most likely a small church, but maybe a vicarige or small manor as well.

That's good. Vey good.
Stupid haunted place and then getting in trouble for 'viciously murdering two dogs', breaking and entering and 'vandalism'.
Only the second charge was real. The thingy there would have killed us if we'd left before the two guard dogs arrived. (They were King Charles Spaniels by the way) And it was in the bin, but the bin was full.
But we heard everything from there and when we tried to leave the kitchen the bin tipped over and rolled over to us slowly and it was barking and growling so viciously that we had to stare at the bin until they arrrived.
And I wa recording everything and the sound was played at the trial and scared everyone. And the tape was filmed by another person who got in troubl with a security guard and only some of the tape could be shown/.
And the ghost dog demon thingy killed the two spaniels! Badly! We could hear them screaming and yelping and we were running and crying and the dog demon thingy was growling and barking o loudly we thought it was behind us.

Very bad dream. We were only there because some girl said she thought the hedge was haunted and we went there during a trip and we saw this 'nose' in the hedge and she said that it would be around more in the night. So we went there and were in the kitchen when the dog demon thingy showed up and everything was so damn scary.

I had an odd dream the other night, it was really realistic.

I was driving my car following a friend when I couldn't get over a steep hill and so my car broke down.

Then Noel Edmunds jumps out of nowhere with a microphone saying I was the next guest on his new show, "wish or work".

This show does not exist but I dreamt up all the rules and premise. The contestant needs to be in a damsel in distress scenario to be chosen. Then two words are randomly generated. In the dream these words were "marriage" and "beaches". Then the contestant says whether they'd rather work towards a goal associated with the words or wish that the goal had already been met. I said, in the dream, that "beaches" would be one to wish for as I don't live near a beach and that marriage I'd have to work at as I can't be given a marriage without even having a girlfriend. Then at the end of the show the contestant weighs up being given things vs. working for them.

Then I was whisked off to a hotel swimming pool to impress some ladies, and I was being coached my Noel about the eventual goal of getting married. I did a couple of lengths of the pool wearing a blue dressing gown, then I took that off and I was wearing a white dressing gown. And then I took that off and I was wearing trunks.

Then I went to the hotel room where I was trying to watch Noel Edmunds on telly. But it wouldn't work. Then I got a signal and he said "they'll be here soon". The hot girls show up of course I wake up as is tradtional.

When I woke up I spent ages trying to figure out if that was a real TV programme or not. Very odd.

That's a bit expensive. I tend not to buy books over £1 unless they're in extremely good condition or part of a series I've been collecting for mooer than one year. And then it takes two to three weeks to decide whether or not to buy it.

Dreams you say?

There are only two dreams I have ever remembered.

One involved some sort of pack of wolves that stalked the city at night and chose houses to attack. Except these wolves were like the deinonichus in Jurrasic Park. They could open doors. And had criket bats for bludgening people. Don't ask how. They just did.

The other dream was effectively the Hitchcock film 'The birds'. But in garish technicolour and instead of birds there were various vicious brightly coloured polygons trying to kill me.

In my defence, the second dream was whilst I was doped up on morphine in hospital. But still really damn weird.

Jigsaw gives you everything you need to win his game, and even tells you the rules. All you have to do is think, and care about your life.
Remember, Jigsaw's targets all don't love their life, and the game is simply so they can learn to love living, again.
Of course, I haven't seen beyond SAW II, so my information may be slightly outdated.

Well, I hit the Barnes and Nobles todaywith abunch of giftcards I had saved up. I wanted to get some books that I haven't read and would look niceon my bookshelf (I treat mybookshelf like a reading resume). The cashiers' reaction: "wow. Sun Tzu and Lovecraft, what an interesting combination."
Dear adults: Yes, I am a teenager who enjoys reading. Yes I read books that were meant for people three times my age. Can we move on please?

Amen Firefox. My favorite book a while back was Sun Tzu's Art of War. People gave me the weirdest looks.

To be fair, the cashier seemed genuinely pleased at my selections... (Which were a Lovecraft compliation, The Art of War, and a Clancy novel)
But this comes up to often...
"What doyou want to be when you grow up?"
"Oh I don't know, I like strategy, so probably gointo the military, 'officer and a gentleman' and all that."
"You want to be a soldier?"
":smallannoyed:"

Sun Tzu and Lovecraft? Hmm...

"Proper Logistics of Great One Unit Deployment"? "Unspeakable Horrors and Interrogation"? "Rl'yegh Defense Strategies"?

It's not your age per se. As someone who works for Beowulf and Grenoble I think the two COMBINED is unusual. Most people three times your age read the biggest crap  (The Secret anyone? Or the newest load of hooey from Poprah (Oprah) A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle)

Sometimes I play out various scenarios of what the oddest combos of books are. Such as "Kama Sutra" with a children's book coming out of the box.

Also there's a book called "The Game" (or something similar) It always makes me lose :frown:

Someone on the B&N community mentioned they found Marley and Me (a book about a dog basically) with Skinny Bitch. THAT'S funny right there.

I think other combos I could come up with are probably mostly inappropiate considering some books titles.... >.>

[/bookseller geek]

EDIT: NINJAAAAAAAAaaassssssssssssssss! But yes. We're always pleased to see some actual interest in reading and not.....whatever the Poperah has come up with

(btw all spoof on names are from the fault of the B&N livejournal community and blatantly stolen from there)

Hmm, I was looking for this (http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/12407) (in Chinese), this (http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/17405) (no commentary) or this (http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/132) (with commentary) when I discovered this (http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/20594). Sweet.

I was Ninja'ed?! You did make me think of Karma Sutra + Dr. Seuss. So therefore I hold you responsible for the injuries incurred while beating said thought out of my head...

I also have to go find myself a copy of Mao Tse-Tung's On Guerilla Warfare...

Maybe it really did just strike him/her as an odd pairing, for whatever reason.

Once I bought a book on the war in Chechnya along with a collection of military-themed erotica. I didn't realize until I was halfway to the car that this was a particularly unfortunate combination.

The cashier did think it was an interesting combination, and my reply to adults was just meant to the adults I imagined who would see my reading those books...

Pshhhhhhh Kama Sutra and Dr Seuss. That's almost TOO easy  But very nice at the same time. I apologize for the brain damage

I do get creeped out by the people who beeline to True Crime and get a whole stack of Zodiac killer books........Makes you wonder what they're going to do...

I'm failing to see your train of thought on finding the guerilla warfare book.......but ok!

Sun Tzu's The Art of War is pretty good. So are Niccolo Machiavelli's The Prince and Francis Bacon's On Empire, IMO.

Edit: I also have a spiffy new Bathatar.
