View Full Version : The OotS' preferred light reading material

Well, as I have nothing better to do at the moment, I thought I'd do a bit of pointless speculation on this:

What would be the preferred comic book/graphic novel/manga of each member of the OotS? Or, failing that, favorite comic book hero or heroine? (I am well aware of the paradox of comic characters reading comic books, but...)

The suggestion box is open for business; to start things rolling, here's a few VERY rough speculations.

:roy: Despite the fact that Superman would be an ideal suggestion with the similar ethos and the get-into-melee-to-defeat-the-evil theme, there's one reason I can't say it. Superman flies. Roy does(did) not. :smalltongue: So, sticking to similar ideals and methods, I suggest Captain America.

:haley: I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest Haley might identify with/admire Natasha Romanova, a.k.a. Black Widow. Both are essentially covert ops specialists, and both have red hair. Failing that, Haley might enjoy reading issues of Catwoman instead.

:elan: Tough one here... I'd be tempted to say Elan might read The Amazing Spider-Man, if only because Peter Parker has made some mighty bad puns while fighting. Oh, and he gets the redhead girlfriend as well. :smallwink: However, if we're going with personality matches, Elan probably reads Archie comics.

:durkon: Doesn't seem like a comic book type to me. But if he did read any, he'd probably leaf through- and then criticize- The Mighty Thor.

:vaarsuvius: Again, likely not a comic reader. But might be intrigued to glance at a copy of Dr. Strange: Sorcerer Supreme. Aspirations of arcane power envisioned while reading the latest issue, maybe?

:belkar: Drools over back issues of Johnny the Homicidal Maniac. Duh.

:nale: Likely doesn't feel comics are worth his time, preferring to read Machiavelli's The Prince. But he'd probably sympathize with the continually 'oppressed' Doctor Doom.

:sabine: Probably has an assortment of violent/erotic manga, the 'softest' of which might be the Hellsing manga.

:thog: Can't read, but isn't it obvious? "Thog smash puny prison', anyone? :smallwink:

I won't offer up my suggestions for Team Evil or any other major player just yet; this is just to get the ball rolling and see whether anyone else has thoughts on the topic. It's not much of a topic, but, well... I was bored.

So... if the OotS read comics, what is their favorite comic/series/character?

Belkar would probably enjoy The Punisher. They're remarkably similar in many ways, except The Punisher actually has some degree of a legitimate reason for killing. He'd also probably read Your Mommy Kills Animals for the laughs.

See comic 64. Thog has 2 levels of fighter and is thus literate.

Honestly...I can't see Roy, Durkon or Varsuvius reading comic books at all :P

I figure Haley would like Catwoman.

Elan would like just about anything really. I don't think he has very discerning tastes.

Xykon would read the comic "The Far Side". It's the only thing long enough to hold his attention and fairly random (though not violent :() :smalltongue: Characterwise, Xykon might like the Joker.

I can see Red Cloak loving Magneto.

Personally, and it's not really a comic book, but I can see V being a Whovian.

:roy: I can actually see him reading ElfQuest, because it also involves a bad-ass sword wielder.

:haley: Doesn't read comics, but picks up an issue of Glamour Weekly to find out what the rich celebrities are doing. And steal from them.

:elan: Transformers, because how is that not cool?

:durkon: He'd probably be the type to enjoy Garfield. Yawn.

:vaarsuvius: Sandman, for a highly literary and magically-based graphic novel that enjoys effulgently utilizing overly long phrasings.

:belkar: How about the 300 graphic novel? It doesn't get much bloodier than that.

:nale: Nale doesn't read comics, he writes his own webcomic, which is at about the same level of genius as Dominic Deegan or Control-Alt-Del, and he passionately believes it is the greatest thing ever, and sends Thog after people who dare criticize it.

:xykon: Anyone familiar with the Suicide Bunnies? Or, the Black Outlook comics. They're so morbid and bloody, I'm sure Xykon would love them.

:redcloak: Reads the Order of the Stick, fervently hopes for the protagonists to die, and vehemently argues on the message boards that it's such a bad comic.

:mitd: Charlie Brown.

:roy: Sun Tzu's "Art of War"

:haley: Romantic short stories, and ladies magazines

:belkar: Doesn't read, plays violent video games, watches sport, bad movies and porn.

:elan: Reads Donald Duck, and not the ones by Carl Barks or Don Rosa

:vaarsuvius: When not studying magic, reading some light litterature about the game of go.

:durkon: Relaxes with the dwarfen newspaper.

:sabine: Violent and pornographic manga/hentai.

:xykon: Marvel comics.

Ooh, meta.

I could totally see Redcloak as a hateful fanboy (i.e. "You know I'm a real fan because I hate it so much.") in his spare time.

:roy: He's basically a badass normal, so, Batman, I guess.

:haley: Catwoman. She's a thief. D'oh.

:elan: Something lame. "Superman's Pal Jimmy Olson", maybe.

:belkar: Took a level in barbarian. Conan, perhaps?

:thog:
"Thog smash puny prison', anyone? :smallwink: Good call.

:vaarsuvius: Well, since this is "light reading material" I think it reads the Complete Encyclopedia Brittanica, then complains that the books are too short.

Hey, I happen to like CAD :smalltongue:

Anyways, opinions aside;

:miko: She'd probably organise book comic burnings
:sabine: Hellboy (he's probably the cartoon demon equivlent of Leanardo D'Caprio or something)
:nale: Watchmen (he probably aspires to plot that well)
:redcloak: Batman, The Punisher
:durkon: Mighty Thor
:elan: Archie comics
:haley: Catwoman, etc
:mitd: Archie Comics
:roach: The Green Lantern
:belkar: Deadpool (insanity: check, bladed weapons: check, pop culture references: double check)
:xykon: Marvel Zombies (Cheering on the zombies)
:vaarsuvius: Doctor Strange, maybe CAD in all its text heavy glory
:thog: Archie comics, 300 (loads of dumb violence, like thog)
:roy: 300,

:roy: Doesn't read for pleasure. Whenever he tries to, he gets interrupted by some sort of emergency with the rest of the Order.

:elan: Anything by Dr. Seuss. Also, anything by Shel Silverstein that's not in Playboy.

:haley: It doesn't matter, so long as she doesn't legally own it.

:durkon: He plays the game Morrowind, goes to Jobasha's Rare Books, and reads those stories. Particularly The 36 Sermons of Vivec. This is considered a form of worship, as he immediately afterwards gives thanks to Thor that he worships a much simpler religion.

He also once read Neil Gaiman's American Gods. He now refuses to read any literature by British authors.

:belkar: Watchmen. He laughs at all the horrifying parts and skips over the still-horrifying-but-meant-to-be-morally-ambiguous parts. He especially likes The Tales of the Black Freighter.

:nale: He writes hack novels and reads them himself.

:sabine: She reads the signs in the red light district.

:thog: Crime And Punishment. "grr... thog hate stupid words. thog not know-- ooh! 'axe'! thog like axes! yay axes! thog love this book! ...grr... where all the axes go? more stupid words..."

:xykon: Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal (http://www.smbc-comics.com/)

:redcloak: Self-help books

:mitd: Anything by Dr. Seuss. Also, anything by Shel Silverstein that's not in Playboy. Oh, yes, and it's all in Braille.

:roach: Nothing but joke books and the "Humor in Uniform" section of the Reader's Digest

:miko: She once read Neil Gaiman's American Gods. Now she burns all books on sight.

Xykon would probably read either 8-Bit Theater or Ansem Retort just for the random destruction of the comics, taking notes from both.

V reads Russian novels on his/her spare time, or she'll read Harry Potter while criticizing the magic system.

Belkar would read action comics/manga like Dragonball Z, Bleach, Fist of the North Star or something by Frank Miller for the fights. Chances are he will not care enough to remember all but the main characters' names in the comics.

Durkon seems like he'll just be happy reading the newspaper.

Roy would read Fantasy novels of swordsmen going up against threats greater than they are. He'll try doing Berserk.

Redcloak reads the webcomic Goblins.

Thog is reading "See Spot Run"

Nale, for educational purposes is reading the Evil Overlord List.

Sabine is reading hardcore Hentai, complete with tentacles and other phallic objects. For soft reading she reads Yaoi.

Haley is reading catalogues from a store that sells Diamonds. For soft reading she reads Yaoi.

Aaaaand... That's what I've got now.

:roy: likes to read military history. His favourites are biographies of heroic fighters particularly ones who managed to defeat mighty wizards. He is annoyed that there are so few.

:haley: reads magazines like Hello, both because she likes to imagine herself as rich and glamourous, and for professional interest in the houses of the rich.

:elan: reads plays and imagines himself perfoming in them. He probably enjoys Shakespeare. He might be reading The Three Musketeers for ideas on how a Dashing Swordsman should behave, or joke books for more puns to use.

:durkon: rereads the sagas featuring Thor.

:vaarsuvius: reads physics text books when s/he wants a laugh.

:belkar: is too much a halfling of action to read much, but he does look at cookery books sometimes. He also steals porn magazines, but not to read.

:sabine: looks at hentai in case someone comes up with something new for her to try, and to laugh at the limited imaginations of the authors.

:thog: buys dog breeder magazines for the pictures of puppies.

:belkar: Silence of the Lambs, Red Dragon and such for cookery tips.

:durkon: Anything Thor related.

:xykon: FHM.

:elan: Any fantasy he can get his hands on.

:vaarsuvius: Secretely a fan of Hello Magazine.

:haley: The Economist.

:thog: Postman Pat - though he still thinks it is a black and white Puppy so "read" is debateable.

:miko: The riot act.

:sabine: General tabloids.

:mitd: Playdwarf and self-help books.

:roy: Tsun Tsu's art of war.

:nale: Doesn't have time to read.

:roach: The Order of the Stick.

:xykon: reads FBI torture manuals and complains about being unorginal

:vaarsuvius: . his/her own spellbook. Recreationaly, i mean. the elven stereotype is arrogant and egomaniacal, and Vaarsuvius would probably be more interested in his/her own work on the nature of magic than anything someone else had written.

Found a book at a bookstore a while back- d20 sourcebook, The Book of Erotic Fantasy. Can't for the life of me remember who wrote it, but :sabine: and Tsukiko would probably both drool over it. (Word of advice... be wary of the spells and magic items section of that book)

:xykon: might browse through it, if only for laughs. And then he'd probably think of new and twisted ways of using the spells listed in said book, suggest them to Tsukiko and write up her findings for her next quarterly report for Team Evil. Then he'd get bored and start making fun of the works of Edgar Allen Poe- calling him too wordy and not enough cadavers.

:redcloak:, after the most recent strips, would ignore the goings-on of Xykon and Tsukiko and leaf through his dog-eared edition of The Big Book of Genre Cliches: When to Avoid Them. (And when they are, unfortunately, necessary)
