The Long Road Ahead: An epic tale of adventure, tragedy, and much Tabletop Game Trope use, in it's many varieties

((The place to place the IC posts for The Long Road Ahead in. Now, let's get started.))

You all meet at an inn...

Though perhaps that's an understatement. You have taken residence in Leonard Pershing's Luxury Hotel, located in the great city of Inneskillen, an inn whose motto is "The Heaven's accomodations pale in comparison to our rooms!". A motto is honors, at that. 8 stories tall, with a tavern filled with the best beverages in the Prime Material Plane as it's first floor, it is considered the standard with which all other inns are measured with.

And it is precisely in that floor where this queer tale starts. It is a calm evening at Pershing's, the end of a (For anyone who is not an adventurer, that is. Those people always seem to have hard days, but it's one of the cons of the fast road to riches and power.) calm day. Everyone is enjoying a first class meal with a drink of the same quality, when the doors burst open, and a figure clad in black robes, it's face concealed by a big hood, enters the tavern running.

Everyone rolls eyes. Adventurers. They just have to make a clichéd, impressive-except-not entrance every time they want to have a drink, right?

Not noticing the exasperated look most of the patrons have beared, the figure stands tall, at about eight feet. With a shrill voice and an ear splitting scream, it says:

-If anyone is up to the challenge of it, bring this mighty artifact to the temple of the Thousand Wards! It must be returned to it's rightful place, and I have grown too weak to carry this burden!

After a few seconds of silence, it also adds:

-Enormous piles of gold and great power will be awarded to whoever brings it back to the temple, too!

And with that, the robed figure twirls around and vanishes, leaving what seems to be a truncated cone shaped parchment, which proceeds to slowly float down to the ground.

The Hotel's patrons continue to sip their drinks and eat their meals.

And this is how the adventure starts. I give you carte blanche on deciding how your characters got here, what have they been doing right now, earlier this day, or even a few weeks ago if you want to, and how they react to the appearance of the hooded figure. A more thorough description of the hotel may be provided if you want one.

Now, let the posting start.

That was, ahem, interesting... Here's your wine, sir and my eyes are up here, if you'll be so kind as to notice.

She finished serving the man his drink and bent over to pick up the piece of paper.

Linessa and Dolrael, at their table in the corner of the room (where they were even now attracting more than their fair share of glances, him because of his size, her because of... well, her) watched this with mild interest. When it was gone, Dolrael spoke up first.

"...I wonder what all that was able."

"Not sure. Whoever that was, it didn't seem to drop anything except that slip of paper... What's the Temple of the Thousand Wards?"

"I am not sure. Do you wish to find owls?"

"Yes. Piles of gold are good. Maybe we'll finally be able to pick up a couple rings of sustenance... I can think of a few worthy organizations that require slight financial aid, as well."

Dolrael waved for the barmaid, intending to get the paper from her.

Wither trudged toward the obelisk of an inn, taking a dwarf’s pace as the last stragglers make their way to supper. Elegant coaches, carriages, and a barrage of footmen wheel past him, splattering Wither’s pale-brown wool robes with a slosh of mud.

The tentacles drooping from Wither’s maw twitched as he categorized his thoughts on the native churches of Inneskillen (the one that had let him view their vaults, at any rate). They paid the price of reverence in gold. “Think of it as... buying a meal for the soul,” A pot-bellied priest laughed, as he flashed a glittering smile, “A meal you can’t afford to miss.”

Something pierced Wither’s eardrum in the way only a Shrieker could, reeling him back into the present. He wasn’t the only one watching the barwench stoop to pick up a triffle scrap. For others, it was a pleasant view; but for Wither, it was fragment of the Future. He wasted no time approaching her and the couple that called her over.

With an intense quibble of his tentacles, he pronounced, “That scrap there.. It calls out to my fascination.”

Wither's appearance.
Wither is a slight, lean humanoid, which a spidery mass of greenish tentacles hanging from his maw. He has the appearance of a burnt candle; thin, segmented and made to burn fast. His skin has a mottled blue tone, mostly hidden a ragged set of pale brown woolen robes, clasped with a simple rope-belt, with two convenient pockets of fabric at the breast. His eyes are occluded behind a dark set of crystalline goggles. The goggles have a leather strap that loops around his head and rest just above his ear cavities.

A female elf stands up in the back of the room.
Of all the times to find a job, it's tonight. I had such good prospects.
She leans over to the amorous (and slightly inebriated) couple at the next table.
He's sleeping with your maid, you know. And your brother.
S'yis then walks slowly to the front of the room for a better look at the note.

Sir and ma'am? Sabiel walks over gracefully to the couple that beckoned her (Linessa and Dolrael) and bowed. How may I help?, she asked in a relaxed tone, for she knew that a couple was much less likely to gawk at her and ask for her room number between orders.

Vorg Adalbrecht

A mountain of a man sat at one of the tables, a pile of ugly muscle and hair criss-crossed with old scars. There are people who could be described as 'sculpted', but Vorg's sculptor seemed to have hewn him from rock using a saw, or maybe explosives.

He leered happily as he accepted his drink, his eyes taking in Selbina's obvious assets (her abilities with Prestidigitation, of course). He might not be able to do the deed anymore thanks to an annoying goddess of peace, but that didn't mean he couldn't enjoy the view.

Curious now, he stood (taking his drink with him) and made his way to the small cluster of people gathering around Selbina.

"Sorry to bother you, but could I please see the piece of paper that..." Linessa paused to find the right word, "...patron just dropped?"

The parchment doesn't seem to have anything written on it. It is absolutely blank, with only the yellowish tint common to old pieces of paper to indicate anything about it. Why bother with a silly piece of parchment? It's so silly, in fact, that you have to repress a laugh so as not to look like loonies.

Normally this would be Kana’s night off, but The normal barkeep needed the night off (probably to rectify some neglect his wife has been receiving) so kana offered to fill in for him. This hotel was the nicest place Kana had ever worked, so she’d thought she’d try to make a good impression.

She had managed to charm her way into a job a week ago when one of the other barmaids fell pregnant. She knew she wouldn’t be able to stay long, but this job would put some coin in her purse.

She was leaning over the bar wiping it down, giving whomever is sitting in front of her full view of her enormous cleavage when the strange visitor came in and made his announcement. Standing to her full 7 ft height.

When the being disappeared in a puff of smoke one thing caught in her mind “enormous piles of gold”. While she’s not greedy, the thought of never having to put up with a drunk patron slapping her butt as she passed by was encouraging.

“’scuse me hon,” she said to the man she was passing a drink to.

Stepping from behind the bar, she approached the small group of people puzzling over the parchment the cloaked figure had dropped.

“So what’s it say?”

It really had been a long year, and no one could reasonably fault him for deciding to take a break... I mean, everyone does it. Sometimes, you just have to kick back, get drunk, and chase after that cute waiter with the swishy hips...

Okay, the last one not so much. But there's really nothing wrong with a bit of relaxation.

"Unfortunate, however, that it proves to be so short."

Dominic peers up from his arcanely-complex fruity drink, and inspects the scene gathering around the parchment. The mention of money didn't drive him wild, but the drama of the situation was fascinating. He looms up from his seat and strides over, unceremoniously peering over everyone's shoulders with the grace and subtlety of a flung brick.

Immediately, the bar patrons stand up, and start orderly walking towards the back of the stablishment. Villains, why do they have to ALWAYS have a goatee and thrash the place up? Do you want to take the direct route through the solid fog, or go round it? You're about 60-70' away from Plexus directly through the fog, and 90-100' going around it.

(Hmm... Around. EDIT: Could you work up a map, real quick? Doesn't have to be a work of art, but a visual reference would be wonderful.)

S'yis

So much power, so few brains. Really, how did you survive to this level?

S'yis steps to the side, in order to see Plexus, and drops silenced Blindness on him. Make the move so she remains out of the cloud, and stays 70 ft from him, but the cloud is no longer between the 2 of them. If that isn't possible, tell me, and I'll change it.

DC18, Fort negates, no sign of her casting it.

You SURE you wanna do that?

Lumber. Seems fine, it's going to take more or less the same amount of time anyway.

((So, how much strength did that Ray of Enfeeblement drain from me?))

Vorg

Vorg begins a mighty summoning. He closes his eyes, rests his longspear on the ground, rears back and produces from thin air - a unicorn.

He looks rather embarrassed as his pure-as-the-virgin-snow mount, Snowflake, nuzzles him happily.

Wither

With fumbles about, digging through his robes and creates a whirl of papers all about. Behind his goggles, his eyes become images of harvest moons set against an inky, unobstructed sky. His guttural chants blurr Arcane and Divine, as a heavy, chill mist surrounds him.

Full round action to begin summoning. If I'm not in the fog; I'll take a five-foot step forward, but I can't if I'm in it.

Dominic

"What kind of magical incompetance is this? Rush into the giant fog cloud, instead of bothering to dispel it or blow it away? Let us gird ourselves for battle against the short fat man, instead of just fastening his shoes to the floor and knocking him unconscious.

Dominic rolls his eyes, grumbling some arcane syllables and waving his hands; enchanting those near him with Haste.

"Let's at least hurry the stabbing along, mm? Perhaps there will be some remains to interrogate, or one of you can Speak With Dead."

“So much for the easy way. Why don’t they ever listen”

I’m readying an action to try to flank the spellcaster
ok I need a map of some sort to be able to tell where everyone else is, as well as the solid fog. Kana’s been around enough to know not to enter into anything that a spellcaster summons.

If you are with the rest of the group, then you are near the table, at 60-70' from Plexus. If you are at the bar, you're at about 250' away from him. The fog is just in front of the people at the table, so circumventing it and reaching the wizard would require moving about 80-90'.

Finally catching his breath, Plexus gets up, fire in his eyes. Staring at the place from which Dominic's voice came from, he flares up and shouts: So I am a short, fat man? Yoo'll pay for that! He screams. Then, he lifts his hands up. Waves of dark arcane magic accumulate above his head, forming some sort of purple and black sphere.

Note: You may want to calculate who is affected by it or not. Ariel creatures may or may not be affected depending on their height and distance from the caster, and the orb behind you certainly won't be affected by a cone cast at he main party...

By the way, I can prove with the powers of geometry that I can't be affected by an ordinary cone, as the cone would be 30 feet high only at a distance of 60 feet, whereas I am 30 feet up and 55 feet away from the caster.
