View Full Version : A Suitable Replacement

In the next campaign I am playing in, my DM is changing the norm. Various classes and races don't exist, more have been created, there is no alignment, etc.

I have been asked to play as his new arcane class. Although being based off Intelligence, rather than Charisma, this character would cast and know spells as a sorcerer, and have the same skill and spell lists as a sorcerer. However, both he and I are confused when it comes to the final touches to the class. We have both decided that (for a variety of reasons), in this campaign, having a familiar would hinder more than help. So, my question is: what could suitably be amped or given to replace having a familiar?

Thanks,
I welcome any suggestions.

A bonus feat at first level. Kind of like Psion.

The Metamagic Specialist variant could help too.

Given the power level of casters (over nine thousaaaand!) it's not like you need something to replace your familiar with.

That said, both unearthed arcana (on d20srd.org) and the PHB2 list a number of replacement abilities.

There's tons of class features that can be substituted for familiars in D&D, just give them their pick of any of them. They're in UA, Complete Mage, and Complete Arcane.

Somethingorother Metamagic (use metamagic 3+int/day without taking the extra time) is a common one.
