Alright guys, I was really undecided about making this or not, but your encouragements and the precious help of Goats_o_Mjolnir (thanks pal, for everything) gave me enough motivation to start this project.
This is NOT a comic about me, but a lot of what happens in the comic is inspired by events happened during actual gaming sessions.
Goats_o_Mjolnir will give me an hand with grammars, typos and will try to make this thread a bit more interesting between the comic updates.

I hope you like it.

Cast:
This section will be updated little by little, to avoid possible spoilers. Not everything about the same character will be posted at the same time.

Caracol
http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/1828/caracolnu3.png
Race: Fire Genasi
Age: 32
Class: Barbarian/Sorceror
Alignment: Chaotic Good

Caracol is the son of Diojir, a member of the Guild of the Weavers. He was never interested in his father's occupation, but when the Sphere was stolen, he accepted to recover, although reluctantly. He is quite serious about his mission and tries costantly to focus the other characters on their common task.
He will become the "leader" of the party, other than being the favourite target of the other member's mockery.
He is a fire based elementalist, and knows almost only fire based spells.
Although he tries to be logical and detached, he has an anger problem and quickly loses his patience, rushing mindlessly into fights and often raging at other people's remarks.
Nicknames: Pointy Hair, Meat Shield, Ginger
Background: unknown yet!

Caracol's typical lines:
- Ah ah. Funny.
- Do you know a thief named Callad?
- Geez.
- What?
- Where the HELL are we?
- SHUT UP!
- STOP THAT!
- HELL NO!
- GAAAHH!
- FIREBALL!
- Everything that could be said shouted in capital letters.
- Everything that could be said while waving the arms around.

Sthendal

http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/7624/sthendalyz4.png
Race: Human
Age: 29
Class: Wizard (Necromancer)
Alignment: Neutral Evil

Sthendal was a powerful necromancer, a wandering wizard with no specific quest or purpose, until he met Caracol: now his personal mission is to make Caracol's life way more difficult, making fun of him and causing him massive headaches. He continuosly expresses his total disinterest about Caracol's quest, and he points out this at every occasion.
He is the party's primary offensive spellcaster: his evil nature makes him be quite happy when it comes to killing stuff.
An expert necromancer, Sthendal has a good and wide selection of spells, offensive or not. He considers necromancers (and expecially himself) to be superior to the other classes, and he has a self-centered and know-it-all attitude.
He enjoys driking, killing and raising undeads, and mocking everything that is possible to mock, expecially Caracol. During fights, he always put himself in defended and unreachable positions and unleashes his "necromantic rage".
Background: unknown yet!

Sthendal's typical lines:
- Besides...
- Whatever, I don't care.
- You're quite useless.
- Loot time!!!
- Yes!!! Die for my amusement!!!
- Alright, who's next?

Jorg

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll293/Caracol_03/jorg.png
Race: Dwarf
Age: 53
Class: Rogue
Alignment: Lawful Neutral

Jorg is an expert rogue, hired by Caracol to explore the Den of Misfortunes. He already visited the dungeon, and knows were is it, so he becomes the primary guide and scout of the party. He's interested and dedicated to Caracol's quest, trying to do his best.
Jorg is not too talkative: he rather stays silent unless it's time to come up with plans and strategies. He's introverted, solitary and sometimes unconfortable with direct questions, although he likes the people of his new party and helps them with pleasure.
He's a planner and prefers tactics istead of rushing mindlessly into the action, so he has to keep the rest of the party quiet almost costantly.
In fights, he's sneaky and agile, although prefers to avoid direct confrontations if not extremely necessary. He doesn't shout "SNEAK ATTACK" while sneak attacking. He is NOT afraid of trees.
Background: unknown yet!

Jorg's typical lines:
- Better stay quiet now.
- I think it's better if we do this istead...
- Umhhhh.... Let me think about this.
- ...

Setting:

A Journeymans Guide To The Planes

Hello all, and welcome to another edition of the Journeysmans guide to the planes, published by GreasySlaad Inc. Here you will find relevent and valuable information to help you survive even the most nastiest of confrontations, so open to a page and prepare to be educated.

1# - Planar Mercenaries

http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/2440/mercs2py5.png

Did you know?

- originally created for defending the city of Maran, they became useless once the peace was established.
- a colonel took command of the army, killing the other officers. As a tradition, the ranks are now obtained by killing someone with a higher rank.
- once hired, the army travels in mass to the plane where it is supposed to fight. When not fighting, the soldiers just hang around wherever they want bullying and stealing from incautious adventurers.
- the army just goes for the best offer, often betraying their original masters for a better reward.
- the army has the same uniform, but almost every race can be found in its ranks. There is an estimate number of 10,000 people in the army.
- Many captured criminals can beg for mercy to avoid death or prison in exchange of their promise to fight in the army for the rest of their lives. Other criminals just join the army to have some change to loot, raid and steal all around the planes.
- Mix all the previous stuff and you'll have a buttload of jerks that hangs around being pretentiously arrogant.

~GreasySlaad Inc.

Perhaps one of the most interesting notes of the outer planes is that one should always be aware of the location of thier battles as well as potential enemies. Thus with the recent death of one of our top chroniclers at GreasySlaad Inc., Leopold Thistledown, we present to you critical information on the pillars, a rarely seen sight, but with this knowledge you will hopefully not attain the same fate as our dear Leopold.

2#- The Pillars

http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/7098/pillarsrw4.png

Did You Know?

- Gravity, time flow, magic, alignment, links with other planes... as everybody knows every plane has its own special characteristic. These parameters depends on the "flow".
- The "flow" is a source of supernatural energy, of unknown origins, that sustain the plane and gives them their particular shape and features. Each flow is different.
- Like water in a stream, this supernatural source can be altered by magical powers.
- The Hall of Pillars, built in a demiplane by unknown beings, are the places where the flows of every known plane manifest. The access to this demiplane is guarded by the Guild of Weavers. Only the highest members of the Guild can enter.
- The Pillars look like regular columns, but they are actually more like huge tubes, filled with mechanisms and magic items that can control, change or smooth the natural variations of the flow, setting the paramaters for every plane. None of these devices can be activated without special master items that can be used in the small control chamber inside every pillar.
- Altering or intercepting the flows can result in unexpected but usually detrimental effects.
- Some people say that the Pillars Hall is not the only place where the flow manifests, but other locations are not known at the moment.

In Memory of Leopold Thistledown, a Half-Orc among men.

Well, I must say, the art looks really well done.

I must add that I hope the rest of the comic will be more entertaining then the explanitory comic. I got really bored and couldn't finish it.

Other then that, looks pretty good. I'll be keeping an eye on this.

Probably generic fantasy.

Actually, it will be pure and simple DnD...
Informations about the setting will be posted as the comic goes on, along with the cast members.
I know that my grammar sucks (not a native speaker), but Goats will try to correct me every time it's needed.
Bayar, sorry about that, but the 4th wall will be broken, like, a LOT of times. Because I have fun doing it, and I would like to have fun in making this story.
I hope that this wouldn't get us to lose a potential reader...:smallfrown:

@Nameless: Well, Tieflings have a strong planar connection, they're evil so they have motivation, they're humanoid so they can use all the same stuff most PCs can. In this instance they're a fairly good option for a villain.

@Caracol: Alright, I'll put it in the right section of the index then.

The script and the drawings are well proceeding right now. I'm glad I've done some strip in advance, to be sure to make two updates a week at least (I'm currently working on strip 6).
But to be sure that you don't get bored between the updates, me and Goats will post some fluff about the comic setting next week, just to give you more stuff to read.

Many thanks! I will try to make the comic interesting to read the best I can.
The strips are not filled with typos and wrong grammars, but just because Goats edits them everytime I make one. Without him they would probably be a total mess.
We basically work like this: I make the strip, he corrects it adding more ideas and jokes.
I make the scripts, and I must say that's its funny to write something in a different lenguage, you have an hard time to express something and to convey some jokes, and meanwhile I manage to do some jokes and phrases in english spontaneously.

We are currently editing strip 6, and working on some fluff to post. Meanwhile, check out the Cast section, it's updated!

I have to say, I think this comic is going to be very good!

I certainly like Sthendal or whatever the necromancer guy's name is. He has a certain level of badassery that is unpulloffable by anyone else. I think you certainly wrote his lines well.

Very good so far. Very good.

Cast section updated!!! Featuring your new favourite character :smallwink:

About the 4th wall breaks, I think that is quite necessary, in a DnD comic, do a lot of references, to come up with jokes and to let the readers recognize situations that they are familiar with. As I said, a lot of this stuff is inspired by my past game sessions, and most of the fun came from 4th wall breaking and explicit mockery of other characters class features.

That's the reason I will continue with it (in a reasonable way, of course: you probably would like to hear a story too).

Shadowcaller

Thanks for your constructive criticism. But still think that if you overload a comic with 4th wall breaking jokes on rules instead of subliminal jokes about rules, then your comic will get lame at one point, since someoneelse might already done that same joke.

Goats_o_Mjolnir

For fourth wall breaking, in Slice N' Dice, I am going to start having the players sitting at the table roleplaying to break the wall and use those sorts of jokes. For example, after mentioning a bad character's build (i.e. full Samurai), then it'll show the players at the table, and one will shout at the other, "Why the hell are you a Samurai? They suck!" And the other will go, "No, they're good at doing.... Good point"., etc. etc.

I think this is a good kind of 4th wall breaking, although is "softer" that the kind I use in the comic. If you make the characters talk about their in-game alter ego, you convey the idea that a DnD session is being played and visualized in the comic.
In our comic, istead, you never shift in the "real life", so it's like the story is actually happening, but with continuous reference to the in-game mechanics anyway, just like the characters know that "something" is playing them...

What the HELL I just wrote? Maybe it's better if I go to sleep right now.

Next strip tomorrow, so stay tuned!

Update: Not gonna be able to post the Journeymans guide entry tomorrow....so you get it today!(sorry Caracol, still lifting heavy things into the new house:smallcool: )

A Journeyman's Guide to the Planes

Perhaps one of the most interesting notes of the outer planes is that one should always be aware of the location of thier battles as well as potential enemies. Thus with the recent death of one of our top chroniclers at GreasySlaad Inc., Leopold Thistledown, we present to you critical information on the pillars, a rarely seen sight, but with this knowledge you will hopefully not attain the same fate as our dear Leopold.

2 The Pillars

http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/7098/pillarsrw4.png

I'm glad that you people like this comic. It really gives me incentive to carry on.

Announcements !!! :

- You'll have a Setting update tomorrow or Sunday, with another issue of The Journeyman's guide to the Planes.

- You'll get next strip on Monday.

- From next week, we will be feauturing contests!!! We want to involve your readers too, so we will make small (and rather easy) contests to win stuff like:
- Cameos in the comic;
- Custom avatars and signatures;
- Personal banners;
- Other silly stuff.

So stay tuned and prepare your ninja skills.
OOH! Cameo's, Sweet. Though I'd proably have you slip Rob (Or Jack, or Greg, Or oscar. Or heck, maybe even Righty) in there instead of BRC.

If I win, I'll prolly cameo Slyzkarzenken and Zsaskrazr, my two comedic relief kobolds. Basically, they are going to make constant appearences in my comics after a few steps are take. Spoiler alert! Only read if you don't care, or don't read my comics :smalltongue:

1. Slyz and Zsask get lost.

2. The characters go to sleep.

Whenever this happens, one panel will be devoted to Slyskarzenken and Zsaskrazr to show where they end up. They will wind up in a desert, on a beach, in the icy north, in a jungle, atop a cliff, on an uninhabited island (don't ask), and in some ruins.

I think it would suit them just maing a random appearence running by :smalltongue:

Wow, I didn't expected such feedback for something that isn't started yet...
Anyway, thanks to everyone that is interested.

I would like to be more specific about the "cameo" thing: if you win the contest (basically because you will the first to reply, they will be extremely easy, trust me) you or your character will make a short appereance as a NPC. Don't expect so much from this however, it will be just your presence in a couple of panels as a minor role. I would like to make you be more involved, and to let you decide what you will do in your cameo, but I'm afraid I can't basically for these reasons:

- Making a strip is a long and hard work, and so I can't do large numbers of additional panels just to make your character do what you want;

- I don't want to mess up with an already complicated storyline.

So, the cameos will (usually) work this way: you will be one of the NPC I've already decided to put in the strip. Rather than a random guy, the NPC will have your appereace, but he will act as I already scheduled.

Of course, if your cameo request is easy to accomplish and makes enough sense to figure in the storyline, I will be glad to make it:smallbiggrin:
For the others, there are a lot of minor NPC roles, so if you don't mind to figure just for few panels...

Also, don't forget that won contests could give you customized avatars, banners and signatures too!
For example, I haven't decided already the name of one of the members of the party that will join later. It will be up to you to decide a name: the one that I and Goats prefer will be the winner....
Enough with spoilers!!!! Let's delay this at the proper strip.

Any comments about the Pillars idea, meanwhile?

Thanks to everybody, my Inbox almost exploded for your messages, I got like 30. All the cameos positions have been filled, but there's one of you that can still decide to be featured or not. If he renounces (or delays ) his cameo request, the last place would be still open to the contestants.

The last position's fate, the solution, and the winners of this contest, will be revealed tomorrow morning (here in Italy is 00.25 AM and I NEED TO SLEEP).

For the ones that didn't make the right guess or weren't able to partecipate, just wait for other contests!

Caracol

The last cameo has been finally taken, so this first contest is over.

I'm glad that I had so much response: as I said, I got 30 PM from the contestants. I tought that the answer would be easy, but actually a lot of people had to make 3 or 4 guesses before to get it right.

This contest's solution was...

The wound on Sthendal's cheek: it's clearly visible in strip 6, while it disappears in 7. Unlike Caracol (his wounds disappears from strip 4 to 5, but he states in strip 6 that he cured himself with 3 potions) Sthendal doesn't state that he cured himself, so this is a continuity error.

Some of you spotted other "errors", like the dissappereace of the "No Gambling" sign (that was just somewhere else, the tavern is rather big),
the change of the hooded figure cloak color (not the same guy) or the position of the drunk (not the same guy), and also the "Caracol's talking shoe" error (the odd position of the speech bubble).

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f350/abardam/stuff/talkingshoe.png

Although this is not an error, Abardam, the one who did this joke, wins a cameo anyway for reason of pure awesomeness.

So, the winners are:

- Sampi
- Abardam
- Shades of Gray
- memnarch
- Doihaveaname?
- Bloodyredcommie
- SoD
- MrEdwardNigma.

You people will be featured in strip from 8 and in following. If you don't appear in strip 8, don't worry! A place in the following strip is reserved to you.

Other people got the answer right but decided to not be a cameo:

- TheCountAlucard
His avatar doesn't really fit for a cameo, but will be featured anyway in the following strips.

- TDKFirefly
He decided to request an avatar istead (you can place your request here).

So, I'm glad that you people liked the contest, I just hope you will like the role I reserved to you (and that you wouldn't dislike the events that will happen later...)

For the others that didn't win, don't worry! There will be a contest for every strip(maybe) with prizes, and new cameos in the later installments of Planar Madness!!!

Some news before I go:

- New banner tomorrow;

- Planar Guide update in the middle of the week;

- New strip on friday, with your awaited cameos and a new contest;

- Cast section update on saturday.

Meanwhile, if you want to comment or criticize the comic, you're welcomed!

2008-04-22, 07:27 AM
I was originally not going to participate because I thought I saw a lot differences. I did not even notice the cut until after Caracol gave the hint that it was between the strip 6 and 7.

Anyway, for my avatar, I finally decided what I want. I looked through my past characters and I noticed the one I had the most fun. He was an half-elf acrobat (class from a book called City Works) that I played during a city campaign. He was able to do a lot of cool abilities like running up walls and twisting charges. And his staff was made of blue ice for the soul purpose because it looked cool (no pun intended). That was a very fun character and campaign. So, I would like my avatar to be this half-elf acrobat running up, down or across a wall carrying his blue ice staff.

If this is not possible, let me know and I will give you another idea.

Thank you for my prize and before I forget to mention it, this comic is great.

Oh, right, that would be a good thing to tell you. He had dark brown hair and green eyes. He had a glamered mithral chain shirt so that does not help because he always had it activated. Jis normal clothing was similar to a jester's. It was two-toned, dark blue and light blue. However, he his hat was not a jester's but more like a top hat, dark grey with a blue band. But it was not too tall, just tall enough to hold money from passersby. He was a street performer. He also had Boots of Striding and Springing and a cloak that matched his hat.

Thanks!

As a trained rogue-player, I can assure you that everything suits for a sneak attack. Bare hands. Improvised weapons. Other players. Even a needle, that does like 1d1-10 damage, in the hands of a high level rogue can still deal
8d6 sneak damage (that's up to the DM to describe how is that possible).
A world of possibilities opens up for players creative enough.

No contests this week, also, for the next strip you have to wait at least until next monday (I'm back to my hometown for few days, so I won't be able to draw), but you'll probably have another Planar Guide update in the middle of this week.
Sorry about the dealy, I hope you are enjoying the comic!

I just realized somthing. By setting this in a world where the planes are so interconnected, Caracol can throw whatever he wants in there, and handwave it by saying it's from another plane!

Firearms? Sure, they developed them on plane C but few people here on plane A know about them. Hippo Men, they live on plane B, ect ect.

You know, due to the rogue's advanced age, the fact that he's already visited the dungeon, and, you know, the fact that he's a rogue, I'm inclined to believe he's the rogue our hero is looking for. I might simply not have been paying enough attention though.

And we are back (almost), I came back only yesterday from my country, and I had a GARGANTUAN headache, so I couldn't work on the comic. News:

-Strip 10 is ready now and editing, so expect it today or tomorrow.

-Updates will be irregular from now on, but will be announced before.

-Remember that I announced an update of the Planar Guide? Well, the update is ready, but I need an image for it, the symbol of the Guild of Weavers. I'm colpletely stuck with it and so I ask you, could you help us designing it?
Any suggestions about it will be appreciated, and the one of you that propose the symbol that I like the most, wins a cameo in the Planar guide image!!!

So, give us an hand by partecipating to this quasi-contest. See you soon!

Begging for attention check: :smallfrown: 1d20+2 (+2 for the emoticon)

A LOOK AT THE PLAYERS EQUIPMENT

Caracol's Spear

http://img362.imageshack.us/img362/1986/spearllx4.png

This returning +1 spear was given to Caracol by his father, once he started his journey to the Outlands, years ago. The spear has a long story, and had countless owners before ending in the Guild of Weavers armory, its manufacturing is unknown.
It's made of a strange matter, more like organic or stony than metallic. It doesn't have, however, any ability to overcome damage reductions.

Sthendal's Robes

http://img362.imageshack.us/img362/2070/robeljq6.png

Crafted in Toldoth, Sthendal's hometown, this robe is common among necromancers of that city, like a signature to recognize Toldoth's feared obscure casters.
Wen worn, the robe gives his wearer additional hit points, casting a falsed life spell, always active. The spell is cast at the wearer's arcane caster level: it has no effect on divine caster or non-spellcasters. The additional hps disappear as the robe is taken of.

Jorg's Axe and Crossbow

http://img362.imageshack.us/img362/3803/axevi6.png

Both masterwork, the weapons that our dwarf rogue uses are not magical, but their dwarven manufacturing makes them hardy and powerful in the right hands.
The light crossbow usually have poisoned darts, and it's the dwarf main weapon. The axe is seldomly used by Jorg, he treats it with extreme care and draws it only if necessary.

Lyinginbedmon
2008-05-14, 07:52 AM
Yeah, the teasing is a fairly commonplace fixture in my gaming circles. Nice usage and placement though. Statistically speaking Sthendal's positionon the roof is detrimental to his combat abilities (Because the longest distance across a box is a diagonal), but Caracol's is looking good. Sthendal appears to be flying though, which should give him a manouevrability benefit.

Actually, I rather enjoyed the Kobold's method of speech... It's not a human character, so why should it speak like the other humans speak... usage of odd speech patterns can definitely give it an alien "monsterly" touch.

In general the series is enjoyable, as always though, the grammar and spelling isn't always 100%, but that is understandable.

Unedited version, waiting for Goats to come!

The spell is a non-core necromancy spell, that one of the players in my gaming group (Sthendal is inspired by him) used like, costantly: and states specifically that if you fail your Fort save, you vomit (and can't do nothing else) for 1d4+1 rounds. And is a 1st level spell, go figure.

Argh, a sinner indeed I am!
Such a wonder in theese boards and yet I had not seen it?
I might as well whip my back with a scourge, so as to repent!
Abardam, o ye mighty warrior, you're like Santa Clause to us! With lollipops and tic-tacs and Star Wars action figures and David Hasselhoff posters!
Full o' surprises, I hafta say... :xykon:

Hiay Fanart!

Thanks Abardam, it's amazing. Do you have a graphic tablet or just use the mouse?

Also, a couple of news:

- I'm stuck between the exams I have to do at the Uni, plus next week I'm starting a evolutive biology project at University labs. Therefore, I'll have waaaay less time to work on the comic from now on.

- I don't have access to my laptop either (I'm using the one of a friend of mine by now) for a week: so, I'm dropping almost all the forum activities (on going games too) until I'll have more time.

Does this mean that the comic is dead? No (I hope at least), but is on indefinite hiatus (at least a week). I'll be back as soon as possible, meanwhile, thanks for all the support you gave so far!

Good luck with everything, I want to see this comic back up. But, as everyone knows, real life is more important than some daft old comic, no matter how popular.

Just wanted to say that this comic is, of course, awesome and the sequence in strip 12 made Jorg my favorite character.

Keep it up, Caracol!

Caracol hasn't been on since beginning of last october, so I'm guessing this is as dead as a doornail.
