I had a neat idea but I can't actually find a way to take advantage of it.

Feats:
Tomb Tainted Soul - Heal w/ Neg. Energy
Energy Substitution - We all know this one
Lord of the Uttercold - Convert [cold] into 1/2 [cold] 1/2 [negative]

Unfortunately I can't think of any application better than Fireballs centered on myself. Anyone got anthing else? If there's any good Necro AoE spells then Death Frost Spell feat would work nicely. Also any way to get [cold] immunity.

1) Cast Resist Energy on yourself.
2) Carry around an Army of undead.
3) Cast your Fireballs centered on your army.
4) Use wall of Fire (substituted Uttercold) to heal your army.
5) ???
6) Profit.

1)Even better, find a way to turn yourself undead. Lich works well. Immune to cold. plus awesomeness.
2)Be a wizard. keep casting uttercold fireballs on your foes or your army, or yourself, whichever you fancy.
3)turn your now dead foes into more undead.
4)????
5)profit.

1. get a lair
2. find a way to get lots of skeletons under your control
3. create a permanent wall of fire, uttercold substituted. inside your lair.
4. Have some trap that springs thieves into the cold flames that is also full
of continually healed skeletons who are immune to cold.
5. ???
6. gather bodies to make more skeletons
7. ???
8. Profit!

Or...

1. Get Fell Animate (http://realmshelps.dandello.net/cgi-bin/feats.pl?Fell_Animate,LM)
2. Find some way to make it turn victims into skeletons
3. Create permanencied uttercold substituted fell animate wall of fire.
4. Shovel various animals and people into it.
5. Get cold immunity
6. ???
7. Profit!

Or...

1. Get Destruction Retribution (http://realmshelps.dandello.net/cgi-bin/feats.pl?Destruction_Retribution,LM)
2. Craft a large metal plate or net that can be carried easily by lots of skeletons and withstand lots of cold and negative energy.
3. Cast a peremancied uttercold substituted fell animating skelotonising destructive retributing wall of fire on the net.
4. Have your skeleton minions run at people, scooping them up in your death net and turning them into skeletons.
5. send some at your enemies and watch them explode when destroyed.
6. Laugh maniacally.
7. Die laughing and return as some kind of sentient undead.
8. ???
9. Profit!

Yeah, Wall of Fire is the standard spell to use with this trick, since first, it does extra "damage" to undead (and hence extra healing), and second, it can do a heck of a lot of "damage" if you don't make any effort to get out of the area. The area of effect is huge, too, which means that you can keep a very large Army of Darkness healthy with it.

Some great ideas here. I should have mentioned tho that I'm trying to come up with this for a PC not an NPC. A Perm Wall o' Fire doesn't exactly transport easily. Anything for the Necromancer on the go?

Uh... use Snowcasting + Explosive Spell + Locate City?

Just cast it after combat to heal them. Or during combat, I don't think it has any rule that it can't be cast on top of your army (and whomever they are fighting.)

you could always take a level of Dread Necromancer. Combined with tombtainted soul, it allows you to heal yourself infinitely (at a 1d4/round though.)Not a bad bandaid, really.

Snowcasting and locate city. is immediately a win button. There's no need to add energy admixture and explosive spell. Just dealing two cold damage to everything in the country is cool enough. It's an artificial winter. DnD nuclear winter.

Best of all, get fell animate and snowcasting, and locate city. Make an eternal wand of it. Spam to your heart's content. Revel in the fact that you've brought down an empire. By the second day, most commoners would be zombies, and the remainder would be brought down by the huge numbers of wild animals zombified. Good luck keeping animals.

You have piqued my interests.
What book is Snowcasting in?

Frostburn. But you know guys, there needs to be more to the formula than Snowcasting, Explosive spell, and locate city.

One PbP game I participated in (but dissolved before the first encounter) had a necromancer type who had Energy Substitution (Cold) and Lord of the Uttercold and a Frozen Berserker (PrC from Frostburn - immune to cold (while raging only perhaps? I dunno)) with Tomb Tainted Soul (or was he only thinking of getting it later?). They would have made a pretty scary team, with the necromancer dropping Uttercold Fireballs into melee, healing the Berserker... So, get Leadership and a Frozen Berserker cohort? :smalltongue:

The build you are looking for is the uttercold assault necromancer. There is some rather limited discussion of it over here:
http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=599129

Take, say, a wizard (specialist necromancer, don't drop evocation). Apply Energy Substitution and Lord of the Uttercold. Save up 3000gp and get the Necropolitan template (Libris Mortis 115) applied to yourself. At level 5, take Domain Granted Power (Complete Champion) to get the domain power of the Deathbound domain (Spell Compendium 272).

Using Desecrate and Animate Dead, make yourself a beat squad of two or three really big skeletal monsters (hydras are good here). You can also pick up Fell Animate (Libris Mortis 26) and apply it to Acid Splash so you can coup-de-gras enemies to turn them into your undead servants.

Use uttercold walls of fire in battle to hurt your enemies and heal your brutes. You can also heal yourself if you get a little cold resistance. Also remember that as a wizard necromancer you're really great at debuffs: spells like Enervation and Cone of Fear are your friends.

As you advance in levels, go the metamagic focused route. You can either work on stacking gobs of stuff on Enervation so your beat squad can wreck things, or on stacking gobs of stuff on your walls of uttercold. I think the Enervation route is better here, but your mileage may vary.

A spell needs to do damage in order for Lord of the Uttercold or any energy substitution/admixture effects can be added. Explosive spell adds damage to Locate City, which just happens to have a very poorly worded area of effect: 10 miles/level radius.

Actually, Snowcasting and Flash Frost is how you get damage onto the spell, Explosive Spell needs you to do damage with a reflex save.

Snowcasting comes before Explosive Spell.

Right, the minimum ingredients to devastate a nation are Snowcasting and Flash Frost. Snowcasting requires that you use a bit of ice or snow as an extra material component, and does nothing except give the spell the [cold] descriptor. Flash Frost adds an extra 2 cold damage to any spell with the [cold] descriptor. So a single casting of Locate City with those will kill many commoners and small animals in the hundreds-of-miles-radius area, and significantly injure most of the rest. Two castings will kill the vast majority of the population.

Really, the other metamagics leading up to applying Explosive Spell to it are somewhat anticlimactic. If you can get Explosive Spell onto it (which requires extra, costly, steps), then it'll force folks inside to the edge of the area, doing about a bazillion damage in the process. But the forcing-out effect (and hence the bazillion damage effect) only kicks in for folks who fail two different saves (with low DC, since it's a first-level spell), and also only works for victims with a clear line to the edge of the area (anyone inside a building will suffer little or none of the extra effect). Most of the folks who would fail both of those saves would have been killed by the flat two damage, in the first place, and all of those millions of extra dice are wasted.
