I'm currently playing a wizard looking to go into this prestige class (com Arc)
rest of the party includes a dwarf cleric (healer) gnome bard, human fighter, human druid , and 2nd human fighter.
My Mage is currently lvl 2, transmuter specialist,
now the question is do i take a level in rogue to quickly sort the skills out, get pure trapfinding and sneak attack, or do i take the cross class penalty, only be able to work wardings as traps and stay 1 level of caster ahead.

Rule one of Cast Club is, you do not talk about Cast Club.

Rule two of Cast Club is, don't lose caster levels, ever.

Don't even think about getting a rogue lvl. Just go with cross class. You have high INT (or should have, if you don't), you won't have problems with that.

If you don't care too much about power level, and the rest of your group isn't optimising, cast club rules don't apply and you can go ahead and take a level in rogue; it can be fun.

if cast club rules apply, it's better to obey them.

EDIT: on second thought after glancing at the geometer requirements: the skill points alone really don't require multiclassing, go with cross-class, unless you think it's fun to have sneak attack or trapfinding too.

cheers for the replies, loved the caster club ref. :-)

ok most of the rest of the group are not optimisers, the Druid may be an accidental one, and the 2nd fighter usually is , but seems to not be all that good at it (he's not a lock-down or uber-charger)
the skill points are not a big issue (int 18 and human covers most of it) but getting them as class skills would be good (so they can be higher) also i end up doing most of the serching and disabling so trapfinding would be really useful (unless i'm missing some spells that could help)
probably would take mage next level (for 2nd level spells) but would consider 4th level as rogue. plus lesser orb spells with sneak attack and sudden maximize would hurt!

It's probably too late now (since it has to be taken at level 1), but the feat Able Learner (http://realmshelps.dandello.net/cgi-bin/feats.pl?Able_Learner,) can help out with cross-class skills. It won't let you get them any earlier, but it will mean that you're not overpaying to get them.
