If I were to send a party to mechanus... what are some possible monsters they would encounter... (besides Inevitiables, I have one encounter with them)... Nothing over CR 15 please.

And Here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modron_%28Dungeons_%26_Dragons%29) is list of Modrons. You can find more info about them in the web enhancement and the Dragon mag 354.

There might also be some visiting archons and devils (fighting in rigidly-arranged pre-set duels).

Formians are difficult due to the vastly different power levels between the species.

You, old son, need Planescape's Planes of Law (http://paizo.com/store/downloads/wizardsOfTheCoast/aDAndD2/planescape/v5748btpy7mo6&source=top) in your life.

You might also want to do a google search for the DiceFreak's 'Law Project', which tried to bring a little more depth and colour to the way the Great Gearworks operated. It included such juicy elements as

Primus and the Modrons as merely the latest holder of an LN-specific Mandate of Heaven.
The Vaati (of Rod of Seven Parts) fame as a sleeping elder threat to the multiverse.
The Parai (think emo Hellraiser wannabes from Planescape) as a perfectionist Borg culture who husband and farm adventurers like a vintner does grapes.
The Inevitables as the vestiges of a lost civilisation of fallen Angels/Archons.
Oh, and an ecology of the moginos, gear spirits, etc...

Who says the realm of perfect law has to be dull? :smallamused:

Oh, and "Manual of the Planes" has the Axiomatic template. It sucks somewhat, but it also does for the lawful planes what Fiendish did for the evil ones; suddenly everything is thematically appropriate again.

Could always have an area in it akin to the Plane of Innovation off of Everquest.

Formian Myrmarchs are CR 10. What class levels would be good to add to them? They qualify for Dread Commando as is (and possibly some other classes as well),

In the MM3, the Gear Golem was mentioned as a planar golem for Mechanus. You could write up stats for one and say it went beserk.

Hmm, I dont see the gear golem in MM3... am I just blind?

It is mentioned in the sidebar in the Golem section, next to the Alchemical Golem, but it doesn't have stats.

An utterly amoral Greenstar Adept with a legion of constructs as "friends", a homunculus as a familiar, etc.. seeking to understand the math of the multiverse. He can get very annoyed with the PC because they are throwing off his equations.

OR

A pack of Visilights seeking to eradicate all traces of imperfection from mechanus. Of course they do this be removing anybody with a CHA of under 14.

OR

A raiding party of Sladdi seeking to break the central cog. They, however have no idea which cog it is. They meet the PC's and hilarity ensues.

Hmm, all good ideas...

I will have to look into the visilights. Which book are they in?

You could throw in Warforged as a "tainted" forge that should have been producing inevitables, but instead churned out a bunch of free-willed psuedo constructs with no respect for law. Make them barbarians and go to town.

There is no taint on Mechanus. Mechanus is perfection. Law is Law, and there is no Chaos in Law*.

Now move along, nothing special about this forge, folks. Nothing to see here, move along.

*Assuming all standards are met. Some assembly required. May contain small parts. Not suitable for those under the age of 3, those over the age of ten million, or slaads. Use at own risk.

Actually, going by the flavor text, Mechanus is inherently tainted with chaos and Limbo tainted with law.

- A race of "perfect" order would be one single, perfect creature. Absolutely no threat of "chaotic" things like individuality if there's only one creature. However, since that would make a really boring setting, the races of Mechanus are dynamic, constantly reproducing individuals, Even given that they're almost perfect exemplars of law, their existence is inherently a little chaotic.

- The Slaadi and their "Spawning Stone" were actually crippled and locked into set slaadi forms instead of completely chaotic creatures by the Slaadi Lords to prevent others from becoming more powerful then themselves. Thus, law taints the chaos denizens of Limbo.

It's kind of funny considering that Law vs. Chaos is said to be (according to the Fiendish Codex 2) the main conflict in the D&D multiverse but virtually no text is devoted to it.

<--- I dunno. Gnomies an' chaos kinda go together an' there are WAY too many uncodified scrapheaps in there to work really. I thought Mechanus was kinda the spot where the scrap collectors grab your bracer but not for parts but just to sort it an' place it in the filing cabinet of properly sorted an' labeled bracers of similar sizes. More like the bureaucracy of Futurama. Gotta have a filing cabinet the size of the sun just dedicated to Medium +1 Bracers of Armor an' somewhere in there is YOURS an' you gotta figure out the system to find it again, 'cause it's yours an' you can reclaim it without problem if you got the proper forms. And the ladders leadin' UP to the level of Medium +1 Bracers of Armor, Human, Residual Magical Taint from Wear by a Spellcaster are animated ladders.

You could use Complete Arcane's Effigy template
Also, don't forget half-golems

Hmm, all good ideas...

MM4

A few more ideas:

A pilgrimage of lycanthropes, who after having failed more conventional methods are looking to make their form more rigid, and thus purge their curse have come to the plane of ultimate law. However, the law is working against them and they are progressively becoming more and more bestial instead of more human. The PC's come across them on their pilgrimage...

Precursors to the Reth Dekala (ToB) have been lampooned on an innemse cog that only turns very slowly. After centuries of isolation the are finally sending out squads to punish their brethren. The isolation has left the descendants without accurate descriptions. Tainted or demon blooded (warlocks, Tieflings, binders etc) PC's can have their identities mistaken

A large part of what makes a good mechanus encounter is the concept that the PC's law is not the only law; and that is is not necessarily right. There is no right or wrong to mechanus the law just IS. Having law act without morals or scruples in an "evil" way should set them thinking.

There's also a beholder-ish monster in Lords of Madness that is mentioned to have Mechanus as it's home plane. It's actually one of the more sane species of beholders.
