The Master Spellthief feat from Complete Scoundrel allows wizards and sorcerers to cast arcane spells in light armour with no failure chance, among other things, but requires a level in spellthief, so...

At 1st level you take spellthief, battle caster and armour proficiency (medium) as your feats. You take levels 2-5 as wizard, but don't yeat wear armour. Then you take Master Spellthief at 6th level. You can now cast your wizard spells in medium armour.

It takes three feats, but you now have a wizard in a breastplate, overcoming one of the class's major weaknesses. Factor in mithril armour, and he can now wear full plate. There may be other ways to do this.
Is it worth the level in spellthief and the three feats?

No.
Who cares?

Mage armor/shield for the armor class at lower levels when it matters.

Displacement/fly/fog spells/invisibility etc at later levels.

If you need armor enchantments (such as heavy fort) for whatever reason, just get a +1 mithral chain shirt of whatever enchants you need.

in short no.

keeping a c ouple wands/spell slots handy means a wizard can have good defenses.

blur, displacment, invis, greater invis, stoneskin, FOM....etc

overcoming one of the class's major weaknesses.

Wizards have low AC? When did that happen?

1. Have the outsider subtype (there is a feat for this)
2. At level 3, your wizard Alter Selfs into a Ravid, with 60 ft Fly (perfect) and +15 NA
3. Cast Scintillating Scales to turn your NA bonus into a deflection bonus to AC.
4. ???
5. Win.

Why you'd worry about getting full plate instead of a nice chain shirt I don't know. Master Spellthief has its merits, but spending 2 feats for 4 AC is not worth it.

Solo, casters don't have to stoop to those levels to win. :smallyuk:

Aye, but the point is that they can.

Whatever you do, please, don't take a level in Spellthief.

Unless you have a good unseen seer build.

I'm drawing a blank, what book is Unseen Seer in, and what makes it work well with Spellthief?

Unless you have a good unseen seer build.

Arguably, Rogue is better since you need to take Practiced Spellcaster anyway. And you can only steal first level spells if you have only one level of Spellthief.

But that's the point in using Master Spellthief, it gives you full spellstealing progression.

Complete Mage. It advances both spellcasting and sneak attack. The beauty of the Master Spellthief feat is that all your Wizard and Unseen Seer and Arcane Trickster levels, all increase your spellthieving ability.

Except that Master Spelthief increases the size of spell you can steal, but not the number of spell levels you can hold, so you can still only steal first level spells if you only have 1 level of Spellthief.

Well, you can still strip an enemy of his higher-level spells, even if you can't store them to use yourself. That might be worthwhile (though not worth the loss of a level of spellcasting).

Mage armor/shield for the armor class at lower levels when it matters.

Displacement/fly/fog spells/invisibility etc at later levels....And still Mage Armor at later levels. It's a first level spell that lasts an hour/level. There's never any good reason to not have it up. Heck, even if you do manage to get armor better than 4 AC on your wizard, you still might as well use Mage Armor, in case you run into something incorporeal.

Except that Master Spelthief increases the size of spell you can steal, but not the number of spell levels you can hold,

That is incorrect. The Master Spellthief feat increases the "Steal Spell" mechanic, which includes both the stealing of spells and casting them back. The example with the feat clearly specifies "[stealing spells] as if he were an 8th-level spellthief".

(yes, I suppose you could read it so as to imply something else, however that would make the feat pretty much entirely pointless; remember how WOTC has tried their hardest at making multiclassing worthwhile. and this is one of their latest efforts).

However, you won't be getting Steal SLA this way.
