Elemental Changeling

Creating an Elemental Changeling:

“Elemental Changeling” is a natural or acquired template that can be added to any corporeal animal, humanoid, giant, monstrous humanoid, magical beast or fey. This template is usually natural, but can be acquired by use of a ritual detailed later in this section.

Size and Type

The base creature’s type does not change; however, it gains both the shapechanger subtype and whatever elemental subtypes the base elemental has. The changeling takes on some characteristics of an elemental, referred to as the base elemental.

The base elemental must be the same size as the base creature.

An Elemental Changeling uses either the base creatures or the base elemental’s statistics and special abilities in addition to those described here.

Hit Dice and Hit Points

Same as the base creature plus the base elemental. To calculate total hit points, add Constitution modifiers according to the score the changling has in either form.

Speed

Same as the base creature or base elemental, depending on which form the changeling is using.

Armour Class

The base creature’s natural armour bonus is increased by +2 in both forms.

Base Attack/Grapple

Add the base attack bonus for the base elemental to the base attack bonus for the base creature. The changeling’s grapple bonus uses its attack bonus and modifiers for Strength and size depending on the changeling’s form.

Attacks

Same as the base creature or base elemental, depending on which form the changeling is using.

Damage

Same as the base creature or base elemental, depending on which form the changeling is in.

Special Attacks

A changeling retains the special attacks of the base creature or base elemental, depending on which form it is using.

Special Qualities

A changeling retains all the special qualities of the base creature and the base elemental, with the exception of Elemental traits, which are only retained by the base Elemental. The changeling also gains the qualities described below.

Alternate Form (Su)
A changeling can assume the form of a specific elemental (as indicated in its entry).

Changing to or from elemental form is a standard action.

A slain changeling reverts to the form of its base creature, although it remains dead. Separated body parts retain their elemental form, however.

Damage Reduction (Ex)

An elemental changeling in elemental form has damage reduction 5/-.

Immunities (Su)

A changeling in any form possesses the elemental immunity to poison, sleep effects, paralysis, and stunning.

Elemental Empathy (Ex)

Automatically gains any elemental languages known by the bonded elemental and gains the ability to communicate with elementals of its type and a racial +6 bonus to Charisma-based checks when communicating to Elementals of its type.

Darkvision (Ex)

A changeling has darkvision out to 60ft in any form unless the base creatures darkvision extends further, in which case, that is used.

Base Save Bonuses

Add the base save bonuses of the base elemental to the base save bonuses of the base creature.

Abilities

All changelings gain +2 to charisma. In addition, when in elemental form, a changeling’s physical ability scores improve according to its kind. These adjustments are equal to the elemental’s normal ability scores -10 or -11.

In addition, a changeling may also gain an additional ability score increase by virtue of its extra Hit Dice.

Skills

A changeling gains skill points equal to (2 + Int modifier, minimum 1) per Hit Die of its elemental form, as if it had multiclassed into the elemental type. (Elemental is never its first Hit Die, though, and it does not gain quadruple skill points for any elemental Hit Die.) Any skill given in the elemental’s description is a class skill for the changeling’s elemental levels. In any form, a changeling also has any racial skill bonuses of the base creature and of the base elemental, although conditional skill bonuses only apply in the associated form.

Feats

Add the base elemental’s feats to the base creatures. If this results in a changeling having the same feat twice, the changeling gains no additional benefit unless the feat normally can be taken more once, in which case the duplicated feat works as noted in the feat description. This process may give the changeling more feats than a character of its total Hit Dice would normally be entitled to; if this occurs, any "extra" feats are denoted as bonus feats.

It’s possible that a changeling cannot meet the prerequisites for all its feats when in the form of its base creature. If this occurs, the changeling still has the feats, but cannot use them when in the form of its base creature form. A changeling receives Iron Will as a bonus feat.

Gaining the Elemental Changeling Template

(Note: this section uses the variant incantation rules from Unearthed Arcana)

Elemental Merger
Transmutation
Effective Level: 4th
Skill Check: Knowledge (the planes) DC 20, 4 successes
Failure: Elemental Backlash
Components: V, S, Sacrifice
Casting Time: 60 minutes
Range: Touch or Personal
Target: On willing subject or yourself
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No
This Incantation grants the recipient the Elemental Changeling template.

Failure

If the caster fails two knowledge (the planes) checks, the recipient receives 1d6 of damage for every hit die the Elemental sacrificed had. For Elementals with more than one elemental subtype, it deals 1d6 per subtype per hit die.

Sacrifice

An elemental of the type and size that you wish to merge with must give its life, willingly or not, in order to complete this ritual

Backlash

The recipient of the ritual is exhausted for one week after the ritual as their body seeks to adjust itself to the presence of an elemental spirit.

Example Elemental Changelings:

You see rushing towards you, a giant bipedal lizard, its mouth full of razor sharp teeth and its body adorned with talons and claws. It opens its mouth, snarls and then, starting at its tail, bursts into flames. It flows and changes, keeping its vaguely lizard-like shape. The fore-limbs grow to enormous size and it lashes out at you with the fiery pseudopodia.

Burn (Ex)

A Fireling’s fire elemental form’s slam attack deals bludgeoning damage plus fire damage from the elemental’s flaming body. Those hit by a fireling’s slam attack also must succeed on a Reflex save (DC 26) or catch on fire. The flame burns for 1d4 rounds. A burning creature can take a move action to put out the flame. The save DC is Constitution-based.

Creatures hitting a fireling with natural weapons or unarmed attacks take fire damage as though hit by the elemental’s attack, and also catch on fire unless they succeed on a Reflex save.

The ground parts noiselessly as a rough humanoid shape made entirely out of raw stone and clay rises from the soil. The creature glides through a pillar and begins to shrug as if shaking the dirt from its body. The stone pulls itself into the lump’s body and the clay begins to take on a more humanoid looking form. In a matter of moments, what seemed to be an earth elemental has become a Bugbear wielding a morningstar with hostile intent etched on its face.

Its burrowing leaves behind no tunnel or hole, nor does it create any ripple or other signs of its presence. A move earth spell cast on an area containing a burrowing changeling flings the creature back 30 feet, stunning it for 1 round unless it succeeds on a DC 15 Fortitude save.

A Stoneling Bugbear can start a bull rush manoeuvre without provoking an attack of opportunity. The combat modifiers given in Earth Mastery, above, also apply to the creature’s opposed Strength checks.

Notes: As you might have guessed, this is a varient on the Lycanthrope template that I wrote up about a year ago and never found the time to post. Two things are missing, the CR adjustment and LA, these may be included in a later update, but count on it.

Can't say I've read all of it, but everything looks nice and crunchy, and well thought out. However, fluff is desperately needed, and a picture would be nice.
