I just saw them. As in, Jaime and Adam spoke at my university tonight.

To put it lightly, it was awesome. They had a physics professor who asked them questions and then opened it for audience questions. Also, they showed a couple clips. One was one producers wouldn't let them air of Adam lighting his fart on fire, which was hysterical since they rigged up a chair that had stirrups like in the gynecologist's office. The second was what they termed "explosion porn", which was a montage of their finest explosions, particularly the rocket heater and the concrete truck.

It was awesome...Just had to vent to fellow nerds. :)

Cheers,
Syka

Wow, that kicks something I can't say on these forums.

Awesome. They should get that second one on Youtube or some such, I'd love to see it.

I'm sure somebody video taped it with their phone.

I disagree with some of their experimental methods from time to time, but I do watch the show regularly. Great stuff. :smallwink:

My school got Bill Nye. Who wins?

But I love Mythbusters- they do know their stuff, and it's always hilarious.

My school is a big engineering school, and at one point Adam asked how many engineering students there were. Then he asked how many times they've yelled at the TV that the methodology was wrong. :) (Quite a few hands went up)

The thing is, neither of them are actually engineers or scientists. They're just...FX guys who like to tinker.

Although Adam did mention the University of Maine just awarded them with honorary engineering degrees.

And I am sure some of it got filmed. It was a packed house...the most a speaker at my school has gotten since 2004, and we've had people like Lewis Black, Kevorkian, and others come. Someone was bound to have gotten at least a little on a camera phone (we weren't allowed video things in there).

Cheers,
Syka

At our uni one of the colleges every year gets a politician to come speak. Without going into details, I hear that Julia Gillard was excellent. Alas, I haven't been to any of the other talks I've seen posters for about the place...
Y'know, I think I'd really like to see the Mythbusters guys get together with Dr Karl (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr_Karl), Adam Spencer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_Spencer) and Wil Anderson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wil_Anderson) for some sort of show (to summarise for those who don't know, the former is a scientist, media personality and recently politician (part of the brand-new Climate Change Coalition) known for explaining some fairly complex scientific concepts in simple and entertaining ways and for, as it says in the Wiki, debunking scientific myths. The other two are extremely nerdy comedians). Any others (probably fellow Australians) with me on this?

We got Bill Nye earlier the semester. :) We win, we got both.

I think one of the best questions involved collaboration with other Discovery show hosts. They said they'd like to see Les Stroud or Bear Grylls come and survive in the shop for a week. ;) But Mike Rowe is one they've been trying to talk Discovery into letting them do a collab with. Like, "Dirtiest Myth" thing I guess.

Either way, it was neat hearing about some of their upcoming shows.

I have no idea who your talking about, Serp, but I'm certain it would be entertaining. :)

Cheers,
Syka

Syka wins due to getting the Mythbusters. Bill Nye is a **** in real life, sorry to say.

I'm not sure. On the one hand, all of them are awesome. On the other, there'd be too many awesome personalities in one show for the awesomeness to reach its full potential.

We had Ira Flatow at my university. He broadcast a whole Science Friday episode from our auditorium. Public radio FTW!

How about, all within the viscinity of one another, doing their own shows, that overlap, and each go for long enough that you can see enough of each to get your fill of the awesomeness of each?

Science Friday is one of the most interesting shows on talk radio, I agree.

Too bad it's never on when I'm spending hours in my car.

Lucky ****. I'd love to see them do a crossover with Mike Rowe. The guy's great- his narration is amazing, so I'd like him just for the laughs he brings.

And what I like about Mythbusters is the same thing that many of the geeks over on the XKCD thread about that comic above didn't like- that they don't take the time to measure out every little variable and the like. I hate that mindset- that we need to make sure to calibrate every little thing. I prefer to lay out the broad strokes and let the little things worry about themselves, because most of the time they will. And that's what mythbusters does, and for that, I approve.

I love that show. Particularity how many episodes go something like this:

Myth-busters episode layout
1. Confirm/disprove myth
2. take it to the next step
3. blow something up (preferably myth related, but it doesn't matter)

I loved the episode where they painted the Hindenburg with rocket fuel. good times.

Well hopefully, they will realize they can get two full shows out of it. One focusing on the mythbusting, the other focusing on the dirty parts.

They did have a kind of cross over between shows when the were working on sharks. I believe they had the same expert on two different shows. Didn't much care for the non-mythbusting show. It tried too hard to build up drama.

I'm not campaigning against the show, mind you; I really do enjoy it. :)

However, not all experiments are created equal, and sometimes I wonder if it's helpful (in the sense that XKCD means) to suggest that they are.

YOU DON'T KNOW WHO BILL NYE IS!?

Seriously, Bill Nye was the man who got me into science when I was a kid. Some kids watched Barney, others watched Arthur. I watched Bill Nye mix chemicals and teach us why chemistry works. (He did other things too, but the smoking bottles of chemicals are my fondest memory.)

Also, if you think your school is bad, I'm homeschooled. Special guests=/<0.

Who're they? :smallconfused:

Your Bill Nye question is answered, so I'll handle this one.

They are the kings of awesome, and lords of win.

More calmly, though not more accurately, they are special effects masters (Adam and Jamie) who turned their considerable skills to debunking myths and urban legends. Can lightning strike you through the phone? Does hypnosis work? Will diving save you from bullets?

They test these myths by doing them - we need to see whether lightning can strike through a phone line? Build a model house, put a dummy on the phone, and hit the house with lightning. Will diving save you? Get some guns and hit the pool.

Sure, they don't always do their experiments with all possible rigor, due to time and other constraints, but they generally acknowledge or correct themselves when they do. They'll revisit old myths if mistakes are pointed out. They might not follow the scientific method perfectly, but they'll bring the myth to life to test it, and make it pretty clear whether it's possible or not.

Watch the series. Please. It is delicious, exploding, mad science at its best.
