I find that lots of the music from Super Metroid work great for ambience. Final fantasy 6 and Chrono Trigger music work well for boss battles. And of course, Lord of the Ring music always rocks.

Anything epic.

Nothing beats Mussorgsky for a creepy scene, and almost any metal can make an exhilerating battle scene.

Midnight Syndicate actually made a D&D album. Give that a try.
Vangelis has a lot of movie theme songs that don't come from movies anyone recognizes. This is important if you want a scene to be remembered for the story you tell, not because it had that awesome song from Braveheart.
Blackmore's Night does a ton of pseudo medieval stuff that's perfect for tavern music.
Sephiroth is some of the creepiest music I've ever heard. It can be a little jarring though, so make sure you only use it when actually needed.

Pirates of the Carribean. If you are dealing with a big reveloution battle with a bad ass leader then I cannot recommend you higher than the minute and 1/2 or so ofBastille Day (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqkBboJbgco) by Rush.

I'm really fond of the FFI music. Namely the stuff involving underwaterness, for the ambiance. But only when there's no combat, because most of it's calm. So, traveling in a light mood? Underwater FFI.

Holst is great. If you can get your hands on any live King Crimson, that makes for some very, very, gritty fight music. As for Musskorgy, Emerson, Lake, and Palmer's adaptation of Pictures at an Exhibition is downright EPIC.
Dream Theater has some great D&D music, and Vangelis is also good. Stravinsky makes some good mood music, and Echoes by Pink Floyd is also very good.

My history teacher once told me of a band called 'Bad Fish' or something like that.
Never heard of 'em, but apparently they're a blend of rock and D&D

I'm a fan of "Tank" and "NY Rush" by The Seatbelts from Cowboy Bebob for some battles.
Cowboy Bebop music in general is good for ambient music.

Pirates of the Carribean.

Actually, just about any soundtrack by Hans Zimmerman. The Gladiator one is a personal favorite.

I find that the music of Super Robot Wars (some of it) works very well with some of the more epic battles in D&D.

Here are some examples:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=QGtj5tP6-c8 "ZEST SEVEN"
http://youtube.com/watch?v=hchsrbnQ0fA "Dark Prison"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRPKQlpz5tI "The Gate of Magus." This is currently my BBEG's theme.

Apart from this, I use Neverwinter Nights music.

Nothing says "Final Boss" like latin chants.
And nothing chants in latin better than "O Fortuna"

Loreena McKennitt has several good ones.

For hordes of barbarian warriors marching and preparing for battle: Warriors of the world (united) by manowar. And I totally agree with "O fortuna" and everything from Hans Zimmerman. Jhon Williams has a few of good themes also.

The Omen soundtrack has some good stuff. and there's always the Phantom (otO) Overture, though everyone will probably recognize it. Actually, a lot of the soundtrack from Titanic is pretty good, too.

Fighting/Boss Battles:
Notorious B.I.G.
Tupac
Bone Thugs
Very very few eminem songs
Coolio
Snoop
Dre
*Cypress Hill
*50 cent or more explicitly "Many Men", and "Toy Soldier." His only two good songs.

As for traveling, well you can never go wrong when you ride wit Ricky Ross. Especially if you got the whole Port of Miami CD.

* Edited in.

Can't believe it, but...

No one mentioned contingencies?

For victory music, steal no further than the final fantasy victory theme. 8 and 9's are highly recommended.

For ANYTHING that has to do with innuendo, rob Warrant's cherry pie. Your players will be ROFL'ing by the end of it.

For traveling, but especially for REALLY important traveling, like the Showdown of Destiny, Guns 'n' Roses version of Knockin' on Heaven's door is excellent.

For puzzle solving, the Indiana Jones theme works like a charm.

For any confusing or terrifying situation, the beginning of Rush's YYZ is really good. Because it sounds so dischordant, your players will freak out.

For battles, I'd recommend Chrono Cross' normal battle theme (Aah, arabic reminiscences) for run of the mill encounters, One for encounters that are going REALLY bad, Back In Black for a comeback, and possibly Cowboys from Hell for the BBEG, and Killing in the Name of for Dragon's.

And of course, for any bard to bard challenge, any version of The Devil Went Down to Georgia.

For underwater, get the soundtrack to Whale Rider (http://www.amazon.com/Whale-Rider-Score-Lisa-Gerrard/dp/B00008VAJF/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1208308946&sr=1-1).

The music from Clock Tower 1 (SNES) is sheer brilliance for creepy scenes, abberations especially. "Intro" by VNV nation is great for surveying rubble. "Frontier" by Dead Can Dance will forever be my primary Druid track. The Battle theme from Chrono Trigger is good for fights, and Knights and Merchants had some awesome cheerful "out and about around town" music for when things are going nicely.

Naaaaah. Too cliché. If the players hear that, they'll simply Maximize Empower Twinned split ray Enervation the BBEG. Better not give them ideas.

Much better to be unorthodox. Werewolf? Bark at the moon. Manipulator? Cult of Personality. Puppetmaster? The beast and the harlot. Go outside the box, heavy metal and hard rock are a goldmine for ambience songs that leave a mark.

Final Fantasy 7 -- One Winged Angel -- Sheer pwn for boss fights!

I would agree, but it's too villain-specific. Go for a slightly more general boss song:

Dancing Mad-FF6
Battle on the Big Bridge-FFV

There's a great cantata remix of Dancing Mad on OCRemix (http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR01582/) that I highly recommend.

If a character is undergoing some sort of (re)training, look no further than Eye of the Tiger.

When you're making a comeback: Chumbawamba - Tubthumping
When you're adventuring through a strange land: Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze

Give me some time, and I'll think of more.

For any sort of dramatic comeback or last stand

The Final Countdown by Europe.

(It was also the song on the commercial for mario and sonic olympics a while back.) The best song ever.

I've found most of the stuff from OC Remix's Voices of the Lifestream (http://ff7.ocremix.org/) album (FFVII) works well for background for a variety of occasions, as does their Blood on the Asphalt (http://sf2.ocremix.org/) ablum (Street Fighter II Turbo).

For boss fights, the Black Mages (http://www.square-enix-usa.com/uematsu/black_mages/) can't be beat.

Dragon Magazine did a list of recommendations as well - they can be found for reference in Dragon #355 (May 2007 issue) (http://paizo.com/dragon/products/issues/2007/355).

Anything by Nox Arcana is great background music. Very atmospheric, mostly instrumental. The last haunted house I was a part of played their stuff (off of their Myspace page, of all things... it was a low budget affair) all night long, to great effect.

Even the (relatively few) things they do with vocals would be great, although you couldn't use them too often... Sentinels of Stone would be an amazing introduction for a group of sentient constructs.

They also have an entire album of Lovecraft-inspired music if you want to do a Call of Cthulhu campaign.

As a big fan of Yuki Kajiura, I recommend her. She does soundtracks for animes & games (including Noir, Madlax, Aquarian Age, Blood+, Hack/Sign & Xenosaga).

You'll have to pick & choose to get themes that fit 'fantasy', but there's a number to draw from.

Canta Per Me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvWc_xnA1Yc) (With or without vocals)

Song of Storm and Fire (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2VSfb-v-0k&feature=related) - Just a really good fit for fantasy in general.

Mezame (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pozejVHj6_M&feature=related) - Very operatic, dramatic.

Final Fantasy 7 -- One Winged Angel -- Sheer pwn for boss fights!

Sorry, as much as I like the song, it is indeed overused. I find Kefka's Dancing Mad boss theme to fit the bill much better, though it wouldn't be for typical final boss fights.

For an epic last boss fight, Rhapsody of Fire's Erian's Mystical Rhymes (http://youtube.com/watch?v=PATTBM4GdD8) is awesome. It even comes with demonic chanting at the beginning.

The Outlaws - Green Grass and High Tides
Cream - White Room
Buffalo Springfield - For What It's Worth
Procol Harum - Conquistador
Bob Dylan - *
Steppenwolf - Born to be Wild
Jethro Tull - Locomotive Breath
Queen - Seven Seas of Rhye
Queen - The Show Must Go On
The Healy Band - While My Guitar Gently Weeps (cover)
Any of Zeppelin's Tolkien-inspired songs

How has Dragon Force not been mentioned? It's Metal, for Fantasy Nerds. Seriously, all of it.

Rammstein can be pretty awesome too, though the lyrics are probably most fitting for more depressing games..

Also, Night on Bald Mountain.

YES! QFT.

Agree with Ponce, specifically on Led Zep: Misty Mountain Hop and Battle of Evermore.

Meant to Live - Switchfoot is great for rapid mook extermination or victory music.

Gotta throw in some love for the Dragon Ball Z soundtrack.

Apocalyptica does great metal covers that sound much more atmospheric than the originals.

Also, repeat Holst: The Planets, for various situations. Saturn and Neptune are both good for underwater, I think.

For shopping expeditions: If I Had a Million Dollars by Barenaked Ladies.

I am very fond of the music from the Celestial Aeon Project myself:

http://www.mikseri.net/artists/?id=48147

This is a good mix of classical tracks which are made for fantasy-gaming, and they are of surprisingly good quality considering they're free to download. There's a lot of calm music for travelling and exploring, and quite a few very intense and upbeat tracks perfect for battle music.

Gorgeous, but I can't seem to get them to full-download. Could you tell me what I'm supposed to be doing, please?

I use everything that comes to hand, really, so I'm not picky, though I prefer instrumentals. Particular recommendations: none, really. Though I find I like long pieces, since I'm a play-by-chat sort of person; there was one CD I picked up, by the Yamato Ensemble, that had some nice Japanese scene-setters that topped 20 minutes.

I've always thought that the Guitar Hero version of WeThree Kings would make for great boss fight music.

Edit: Guess youtube took down the video. Never mind.

I think pretty much everything by Apocalyptica would probably make good fight music, like Path (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGnAzkh9kn0) or In the Hall of the Mountain King (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YL8jOZ9yqRE&feature=related),
although the orchestral and original (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzyi3C4gNnE&feature=related) version of the second one by edvard grieg is equally fantastic.

Also, everything of the Carmina Burana, including the already mentioned O Fortuna (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqw3KWb9bH4&feature=related), but also Tempus est iocundum and some evrsions of "In Taberna".

How could I forget to mention a bit more metal?

For example: Rhapsody, Fantasy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNc0bosUyI4) Power (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHKRbFZ1HA4&feature=related) Metal (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHUHcuXQoxA&feature=related) at (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WRQ6thP8D0w&feature=related) its (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4v_h1W51N5U&feature=related) finest (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwl3wpiFSgA&feature=related). cheesy as hell.
And a bonus for Christopher Lee (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEMeBTmiX4g&feature=related)
