View Full Version : Tomb of Horrors worthy music?

Does anyone know of any music that would be good to play while running players through the Tomb of Horrors? If at all possible it should be creepy, but subtly so, if you know what I mean. Oh, and if it matters any, my players don't know it's the tomb yet, and since we're in a relatively public place the music has to be relatively soft, so nothing that requires loudness to be "effective".

Malice Mizer's The Game in the Void (http://youtube.com/watch?v=N9wPK4GytLk) would be good for the final battle.

I'm partial to Cossack Patrol (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbFq87Ej1hU), myself, though I've never used it in-game.

Go into his music and try Samurai Ghost, Legacy of Rust, and especially They Crave.

Additionally, you could try looking up the Polish metal band O.N.A. and their former singer, Chylinska. A number of their songs are pretty creepy, especially those from O.N.A.

Just record yourself saying "Are you dead yet? How about now?" And put it on repeat.

Players going into the ToH: Scary.

ToH unprepared? A death sentence.

This. Wins.

EDIT: It also seems this one inane comment has promoted me to dwarf. :smallwink:

Don't DM the Tomb of Horrors unless your group knows it's the Tomb of Horrors >_< It's cruel and unusual.

That being said, I've never really run the module nor is most of my music creepy, I can see some Rammstein working.. Possibly DragonForce because I love contrast, but that's it :P

By the third time your group dies and hears "Through the fire and the flame, we carry on!" they'll want to stab you. They actually might.

Never played ToH before, but perhaps this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2b1D5w82yU) will be appropriate?

I DMed ToH for a few of my friends; I didn't tell them what they were doing until the end of the first night (after about six hours of real-time play).

This way they got to (First) think I was the most malicious DM ever spawned from the DM Pits of Rythyx, and (Second) realize that the person they'd been thinking I was, was truly E. Gary Gygax.

Good times were had by all.

Also, on topic, I just looked though my D&D playlist and found Smooth Criminal (http://youtube.com/watch?v=hxeNZOLNh4c) (nice for when the party wakes up and someone/something is missing or has been brutally murdered next to them...) Eye of the Tiger (http://youtube.com/watch?v=LrOawFUdFfU) (for getting pumped for the final battle/Training Montage/Overcoming overwhelming odds!), and Let the Bodies Hit the Floor (http://youtube.com/watch?v=sO_QntXc-c4) (for when there's a barbarian in your party )

Wouldn't the Funeral March be appropriate, given the circumstances?

Well, they don't know it's the Tomb of Horrors, but they do know that they'll probably die :P

They also aren't using their regular characters.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions, I particularly like the Game in the Void and the skaven stuff :P

Also, Solo? Curse you for Rick Rolling me.

One of those Halloween albums they make for haunted houses that is nothing but someone screaming for an hour straight. Rinse, lather, repeat.

As weird as it may sound, I'd recommend the soundtrack from the Mel Gibson version of Hamlet. I don't remember off the top of my head who scored it, but it's great for ambience. There aren't really a whole lot of sudden "hits" or loud parts, but the whole thing is just quietly unnerving.

One of those CDs you can put on, and turn up up just enough to hear it. An hour later, your party's creeped out all to hell, and have no idea why.

In The End, by Linkin Park

I tried so hard, and got so far,
But in the end, it doesn't even matter
I had to fall to lose it all
But in the end, it doesn't even matter

Awesome, that's another option. I think one of my teachers actually has that album.

And although that Linkin Park song is appropriate, it isn't all that creepy, so I'll have to pass.

Giygas's Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grQkblTqSMs), from Earthbound. Even scarier is the Ronald McDonald version (http://youtube.com/watch?v=6P_BvrtuxAI).

O_O It has been decided. The Ronald McDonald's version will be included in the playlist. That thing is creepy.

I almost want to suggest Black Metal, but that likely wouldn't be creepy enough. For when a monster comes out, something loud and violent might be appropriate to shock them. But since a lot of people who play D&D are into Heavy Metal anyways it probably won't really work.

So I'll just say find the sound tracks to a few horror movies.

edit: whoops! Just read the original post again.

Let me just comment that for D&D, you don't want anything with lyrics. Human brains are hardwired to human voices and they're far more intrusive than instrumental pieces of the same volume.

This (http://youtube.com/watch?v=hXatj9MXf8g), on repeat, I can highly recommend.

Actually, not my group. We're all people who concentrate better with music on, and we pretty much only listen to music with lyrics :P

Another good suggestion, though.

Theres a song in Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess called Midna in Distress. Its great for creepy moments, especially played quietly.
A quick google search for the mp3 can get you it.

The first link, left me thinking, "that's a seriously awesome boss, with awesome music. Why don't I remember this, I played Earthbound!"

The second link? That's disturbing and incredibly awesome and I will be linking everyone I know to it. Thank you very much for sharing that.

I like Dark Madness Resurrection (http://www.last.fm/music/Goat/_/Castlevania+2+Dark+Madness+Resurrection+OC+ReMix), the Castlevania 2 remix from goat, but it's more rock and less creepy. Also, anything from the Castlevania: Symphony of the Night soundtrack is good times.

I don't know if these will contribute to the atmosphere, but how about:

That will get them in the spirit of things.

There's some generally good advice.

And also, how about 'I Will Survive'?

Metroid Prime (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42u0KB6f5eU) soundtrack. There's something inherently creepy about the Metroid series, and I think that the soundtracks help out with that feeling...

I think that's just you. I love that song.

As for I Will Survive, I'm definitely playing that before we start XD

And I think I have enough music now, thanks everyone!

Perhaps you could also use some things by Apocalyptica, especially Hope vol.II (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BsYgcACfWTw) and Path Vol. II (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0_aZXI-3uY&feature=related). The players in my group always get a shock, when they hear one of them, because it means that they are going to die very soon.

If you want some absolutely awesome mood setting music, I suggest the Pan's Labyrinth soundtrack. It's incredibly haunting. I can still hum most of the songs by heart.

+1. I loved Diablo I's music. It was way creepier than Diablo II's.
