During Shojo's exposition in strip 276 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0276.html) as well as Serini's diary in strip 196 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0196.html), we can see that Girard sported a handsome goatee.

However, when Shojo continues his exposition in strip 277 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0277.html), Girard's goatee is gone. Why? What causes the disappearance of the illusionist-tracker's facial hair?

A few theories:

1) The Girard pictured in 276 and Serini's diary is actually Girard's evil twin, Drarig, who temporarily infiltrates the party by getting rid of Girard just as Nale with Elan did 60 years later.

2) Girard cut off his goatee as a sign of respect/mourning for Kraggor.

3) Rich forgot to draw the goatee.

4. Girard forgot to renew the illusion when something was so upsetting that a tool meant to aid in hiding her shocking secret didn't seem so important at the time.

Alternately, the goatee could be an illusion. Of course, this is a silly idea. Why might someone want to appear to look like their good/evil twin? What possible use could such magics have amongst your friends?

Alas, the comic I reallly want to link here is not online - in "Dungeon Crawling Fools" one of the bonus strips shows Sabane suggesting illusions for some (ahem) extracurricular activity.

Edit: Ha! Beaten to the idea by Tilian!

I suspect an entirely convulted plot involving gnomes, an evil hairdresser, and the OOTS equivilant of the Mafia. :smallwink:

Art upgrade? Rich does that, from time to time?

Yes I am sure he did an art upgrade of goatee-removal. xD
Rich probably forgot, that's all. OR he remembered there are already evil twins in this comic. xP

Art upgrades tend to add items, not remove them.

SoD Girard also appears in SoD, and is beardless. Likely means artist errors, but we can speculate that Girard just changes his mind on the subject now and then.

Likely an artist error, but it can be handwaved by saying he shaved it off.

If a reasonable reason is given, it's no more an handwaving. It's a "justified trope".
Anyway, people shaves, sometime. I've a beard, but once or twice an year I shave completely. No great issue.

Girard hid his gate in his goatee. Obviously. :smalltongue:

I think if it were a mistake, the giant would have come to this thread to say so, or already fixed it.

I think there might actually be a reason for it not yet explained.

Do you also expect the Giant to visit the daily Miko threads?

The board probably discussed it to death back in the day... :smallamused:

But the Giant didn't "fix" it for the book like he did Haley's strange arm in strip #1, so there may be something to it.

Of course, people do change their look over time. Young men often grow beards and moustaches to "look older," while older men shave them off to "look younger."

Maybe Girard was jealous of all the "action" Dorukan was getting, and decided he needed a change to better play the field!

I thought it was Dorukan that Lirian was involved with, not Girard?

That's what Dorukan thought, too :smalltongue:

Or, alternately, what Lirian thought.

Alternatively, he may have just realized that keeping a goatee/van dyke properly groomed is a royal pain in the backside and shaved it off.
