What are peoples experiences with horror/darker campiagns and adventures?
I was thinking of running a darker themed lower magic game soon and wanted to hear some stories about them.

Most of our groups games at least lean towards horror or darker themes. It seems natural really, conflict will always have some level of grit and desperation to it. Our games are usually a little limited on magic too, but not always.

Personally, I find those types of games to be a lot more entertaining than alternatives. An adventure doesn't necessarily have to be an all-out in-your-face-nightmare struggle for survival, but it is an adventure, and the darkness is waiting to be conquered.

Your milage may vary though.

Dark fantasy (Howard, Moorcock, Leiber, Clark Ashton Smith) is better than regular fantasy, and horror fantasy is even better. Ravenloft is one of the greatest old settings, right along with Dark Sun.

Consider using another d20 system for low magic, though. Modern refitted for fantasy, or True d20, or Iron Heroes, or Conan d20... the list goes on.
