Greatest OoTS Character (through 550 stripes)

I lurked about here without registering an account for sometime, but I thought I started posting a bit. I think that a popularity contest will be kind of fun, so I decided to make one.

Generally, the pairings are quite arbitrary, but a bit of estimation based on forum popularity, plot importance, and strip appearance thanks to Wrecan's character appearance thread.

FAQ

Why is (insert character here) not in the list?

This is because there are more than 64 characters in OotS, and putting more characters in would be way overbloated. If I miss a blatandly obvious popular and important character that is generally agreed to be much more deserving then a certain character in the list, please do state it.

Why are characters seeded that way?

It's more or less arbitrary on my part, sorry for not coming up with a more scientific way.

How do I vote?

Every several days a few pairings will be up to vote. Simply choose your favoured character. You may vote only once on a pairing. To speed things up, every voting round contains multiple pairings. Simply bold the character you want, for example:

Character C - Character D

When do voting end?

Every voting period lasts 3 days from the posts that starts a voting period.

What is "Great"?

That is up to you. You can simply think the character's deep in character, or has cool design, or you associate with the character. Anything counts. Generally, it would be nice to not too influenced by the more recent stripes (such as the O-Chul arc recently).

What's the point of this popularity contest?

I think it's fun, much like Nazzo's The Stick Award.

Why are the divisions named as such?

No particular reason. They need a name afterall, so I just named it after the main factions.

What is the "wright" doing in the Stick division? What is Elan doing in the Azure division? What is Tsukiko doing in the Linear division? Does this even make sense?

Besides, you already know one of the Main Six is going to win, most likely Roy or Belkar. You should save yourself a couple weeks and start with the important characters.

Roy Greenhilt the hero vs. nobody, Roy wins; a no-brainer.
Daigo D, minor character with a decent amount of recent screentime vs a minor character whom we haven't seen for like 500 strips, Daigo wins; also a no-brainer.
Demon Roaches with lots of screen time many zany sarcastic lines vs. some entity we've only seen twice and doesn't say anything; again a no-brainer.
Sabine major antagonist vs. a one-time-joke loser; again a no-brainer.

The division name is just a name. It's not as balanced if I start facing off Roy vs Belkar, Elan vs Haley, Xykon vs Redcloak in round one. I could name the division "Division A", "Division B", etc.

It's not also to just determine a winner. It's most likely one of the main 6, along with the two main villains, to win. By doing this, it's also a way to sort out the ranking amongst the more minor characters. Furthermore, bringing comparison from the Sticks Award, some threads are not going to be the final winner, but he didn't remove some of the less popular stripes from being in the contest.

Also, some of your "no-brainers" seems to be disputed by a few of the forummers, so there might be a surprise winner, who knows?:smallwink:

I think that Yokyok son of Yikyik deserves to be on there. He was my personal favorite of the linear guild members and an excellent Princess Bride spoof. He was on there only a few strips I admit, but he was more plot central then quite a few of the characters on the list than say, skullsy

I'll admit that I didn't know who Qarr and Isamu are. (Reading through the comments I've picked up who Qarr is, but I'm not sure about Isamu) Thus it's no contest for Miko and Mr. Scruffy.

Edit: I can't quite see how anyone can legitimately be voting for Qarr over Miko. Sure, you mightn't like Miko, but I can't see how you could rate her as less "great" than an incidental character with respect to the overall world of OotS.

Pompey's not bad as a character, but Soon Kim has more gravitas and is more central to the whole story. Probably the closest contest this round though.

Durkon is a central character, and while Loki has some pretty cool one-liners he's just essentially comic relief along with Thor (despite being deities). Loki would have a chance against some of the others in this round, but not against Durkon.

Miko Miyazaki/Qarr - I think the title of the thread is a tad misleading for pairings such as this. Miko is obviously the greater character, but this is supposed to be a popularity contest. Understandable that some people will pick anyone over Miko. :smalltongue:

Mr. Scruffy/Isamu - The REAL ruler of Azure City versus a minor character with no personality who we will never see again. Yawn.

Soon Kim/Pompey - The only tricky one here for me. But, Soon was a pretty badass ghost-martyr thing.

Durkon Thundershield/Loki - Like Roy, no contest here. I think it might have been better to have the Order come a bit later, and facing much higher tier characters.

As I said for Miko, I think people should bear in mind that this is about who YOU personally prefer, not who you think deserves to get higher up. The way I see it anyhow.

Quite possibly. OOTS has a big cast, but there aren't 64 people that matter that much. Only 20 have over 20 strips. You appear a dozen times, you are in the upper half. Over 5 and you should make the cut. And the rules used by the basketball boys does pair #1 vs #64.

I'm sorry, but the third roundup is as predictable as the first two. You should really make this more of a challenge by picking the matches more carefully.

The general idea is that the bracket knocks off most of the more trivial characters in round one. I took the bracket off from sports brackets - they tend to pitch the strongest with the weakest right off the bat. This is in all sort of sports from tennis to ice hockey. I think it has to do with being anti-climatic and all when you reach round 3 or something when only 1 high seed survived with their only opponent 2nd rated.

I do think the 2nd round is far more "challenging".

Lien/Niu - It really only comes down to Lien having more screen time. Especially since we may well not see Niu again.

Dorukan/Sara Greenhilt - Sara is alright, but Dourkan is...more alright (Possibly a little biased since I have read SoD).

Vaarsuvius/Jirix - The words No and Contest come to mind.

Haley Starshine/Captain Axe - No. Darn. Contest.

Cliffport Chief/Leeky Windstaff - Tricky, but I think I will side with Leeky on this one. I always liked him. :smallbiggrin:

Tsukiko/Sangwaan - Tsukiko is pretty cool, Sangwaan is a nobody.

Celia/Kraagor - As for most of the Order of the Scribble, Kraagor is less of a character and more of a plot point.

Hinjo/Skullsy - I always felt Hinjo bogged down the story somewhat, but he IS pretty likable.

Thanh/Kubota - In the minority, but I am going to have to go with Kubota. Thanh was just boring, and Kubota may lead to some interesting encounters.

Julia Greenhilt/Zz'ditri - I simply cannot bring myself to vote for the insufferable spoiled brat in a popularity contest. Ugh.

Belkar Bitterleaf/Flumphs - While I have always been rather partial to the flumphs, how can I resist my favorite little psychopath?

Julio Scoundrel/O-Chul - O-Chul is pretty cool, but Julio is cooler. :smallcool: Plus he was a part of the second Linear Guild battle arc, which is one of my favorites in all of OOTS.

Monster in the Darkness/Therkla - Therkla has nowhere near enough screen time to beat out the lovable Monster-san.

Thor/Redcloak - Thor, while funny, is just comic relief. Redcloak is such a great character, especially after reading SoD.

Redcloak is the Zeppo Marx of the comic. He needs to be there for plot purposes (without his stabilizing influence Xykon would have self-destructed long ago), but he's not really all that interesting. Thor is more or less irrelevant to the plot, but he's almost always funny when he appears.

Edit: I'm putting this in a spoiler in case you don't want to know how the vote is going so far. Though why you'd be reading this post if you didn't want to know I'm not quite sure.
I voted before reading other votes, and just now checked out what other people had to say. The big surprise for me is the number of votes the Flumphs are getting... I can't imagine anyone voting for them, so I've got to conclude that either a bunch of people really really don't like the Belkster, or they're trying to give O-man a nice pushover for the next round.
