Could someone explain to me how to search the forum with google? It's been mentioned, and it's possibly in a very obvious place, but I seem to be missing instructions on how to do so, and supposedly using google reduces server strain, which is always good, in my book.

So, how does one go about this?

If I remember right, you use site:giantitp.com as one of the search components and it will restrict it's search to just this site.

You can also just do it by going into Advanced Search and plugging in giantitp.com.

Yeah, it's a bit less effective than the GitP engine sometimes (not as easy to search for posts from specific people, for example), but it's good if you want to find posts about topics or concepts.

Ironically, I find that using http://clusty.net is more effective then the forum's Search feature (assuming I posted in the thread I'm looking for or I can remember the name of someone else who has, it's quite easy to find things).

Mkay, cool, thanks all for the info. Could you explain Clusty a little better?

I'm not sure how it's different to other search engines, but I think it lacks the tracking feature which Goodle uses to record aall of the websites and key terms you've used with it.

It's pretty easy to prevent google from getting your personal information.

How do you do that? (I'm pretty dreadful with computers).

Well, if you use Firefox, you can simply download this extension (http://www.customizegoogle.com/) and select the two options in the privacy section.

Otherwise, you can look at this website (http://www.imilly.com/google-cookie.htm), which will tell you what to do to browse google anonymously for whatever browser you are using.

Thanks. I added the GoogleAnothing to my favourites, but it wouldn't do anything when I clicked on it. Once it's in my Favourites list, do I need to do anything else to make it work?

Assuming you are using Internet explorer since you said "favorites." Well, anyway, right click on the bookmark and go to properties. In the URL field, there should be the following code:
javascript:x='Nothing';y='preferences';try{if(conf irm('OK: Zero it\n\nCancel: Do_'+x+'_(e.g._already_zeroes?)\n\n'+unescape(docu ment.cookie.replace(/;/g,'\n'))))h=location.host.match(/\.google\.((off|com?)(\...)|..|com)$/)[0];document.cookie='PREF=ID=0000000000000000:LD=en:T M=1115409441:LM=1129104254:S=kSuablMgN8pP9-91;expires=Sun, 17-Jan-2038 19:14:07 GMT;domain='+h;location='/'+y+'';alert('Zeroed:\n\nNow_reset_your\n'+y+'\n\n ')}catch(e){alert(x+'_done\n\n(e.g._not_Google?)\n \n')}void(0)

If there isn't, copy and paste that there. Google will probably complain when you use it though, so be sure to read this part: http://www.imilly.com/google-cookie.htm#blocking

This works well for IE: http://www.cg4ie.com/

If you aren't using IE, feel free to correct me.

Thanks for the advice (I don't want to risk doing anything that could mess up my computer, so I'm probably better off just using Clusty due to how it's pretty much as effective as Google).
