The Rules.
You Read Them!
In order to try and keep these threads from becoming unmanageable, some rules have been created, and they accent the forum rules. Please read those first.

1. Spam. For the purposes of RB one word posts should be spam everywhere. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* should also be considered spam. Quality of content trumps speed of response.
2. Ditch the "competition for control of the universe" eh. It has ceased to be funny, and often branches out into little mock battles that fall into the spam definition laid out above. We've got a PbP section for fights, and even the Town has an arena, I believe.
3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well.
4. Stop advertising other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.
5. Please stop with single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."
6. Do not poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."
7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.
8. No asking "What's the topic" or the ilk. This is *not* a conversation where you could've missed the begining, it's a forum where the current topic is nicely recorded for you. So read up a bit first.
9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.
10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.
11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details

:miko:Anyone found breaking the rules will be sent to stand in the corner and receive a very stern talking to! :miko:

Now, misters, misses, mistresses and ladies, let the bantering begin.

Last night I was up rather late (1:15am) because I was five chapters from the end of the story and you know what it;'s like: just one more chapter...
Then it's two chapters away from the end so you think why not? and finish the book.
ANywho, this book was rather depressing so I thought it'd have a sad ending but it was really happy. Total opposite of what I was expecting.

So I turn in for the night. And the first thing that happens onvce my head hits the pillow is the Pink Elephants Song pops into my head like this:
"I'm afraid, he''s afraid
Pink elephants on parade . . . "
and so on. And then the 'Arabian' bit comes in, the the skaters.
Cue confusion.:smallconfused:

Why did I think/dream/have that soing attack me? I hadn't thought of Dumbo in aeons; no reason to do that. Just did.

Been away for a while. Not because I was away, but because Real Life caught up with me... You sometimes have those days (or weeks, in my case) that more or less live you, in stead of you living that time. Much too much to do, little time for anything else. I hate it when that happens, because somehow you will never completely catch up again. I always keep the feeling I'm still missing things that happened like a week ago, no matter how much I try to read back...

@ CurlyKitGirl: I sometimes get a song in my head, out of nowhere. Like I have some large database inside, that sometimes starts hitting files randomly, and something like a song or a memory or just an image pops into my head. Just enjoy the fact that somehow you can remember a lot. There's not much else to do. Or try playing metal when the song is really annoying  .

Ow, btw, it seems I'll be needing a personal avatar, as mine is not unique anymore... :smallfrown: Although it fits me quite right. I still don't know all corners of this forum, but could anybody recommend me an avatarist?

Well, Dr. Bath did great job on my series of avatar and I recommend him from the heart. Unfortunately, he's absent at the moment, so you may want to head over to Arts and Craft and ask for somebody to do it for you.

Yay new thread indeed!!!

That scene of the movie is really freaky. The animators at Disney were smoking something that was still green when drawing it, and then they gave some to the producers so they would approve that scene.

"Look out! Look out!
Pink Elephants on parade!
Here they come!
Clippity cloppity!
They're here
They're there
Pink Elephants on parade!"

I know the feeling, I had to give up making avatars and fulfiling avatar requests because life started getting way too hectic. This week is quite quiet but it will be picking up again soon, probably next week. I hate homework and coursework, especially when every teacher you have sets it all at once. Perhaps, but we finish school in a few weeks so the deadlines for coursework are fast approaching and the homeworks are primarily practice exam papers. I'll be fine though; I only have three essays in for next week. Last week was a whole other story... About seven or eight had to be in last week, though the three in for next week are three left over from last week. One of which was in for before the easter holidays. :smallsigh:

On Dumbo scene: well, it's certainly surreal; and I now understand why Disney gets its own Disney LSD Scene trope on TV Tropes. A large amount of those scenes occur. Oh, and Disney is eviller than you think - they have an entire Nightmare Fuel section to themselves - Part Eight I believe.

On exams: my first is on the 6th of May. I still need to learn that oral and then research enough stuff on the topoc to get me an A.
Stupid Chief Examiner coming and stupid oral being spontaneous questions.

OH! OH! PICK ME!

OK, so last night was the Graduation dinner. We haven't really graduated, but for some reason they decided to have it on a school night. Then, of course, the after party. I got home at 3:00 AM and woke up at 6:00 AM to go to school.

Went to school, realized that we weren't really going to have many classes, given that everyone was either asleep at home or asleep at the gym (those who were caught with a high alcohol-meter.... score?)

So I got on my computer, and it turns out I received an offline message from a girl, saying she needs to talk to me. I have my suspicions that it's THAT kind of talk. Which is bad, given that I don't know how I feel about her. Furthermore, I'm sure she'll get online today and start talking to me right away, when I have other stuff to do, most importantly 3 final projects.

3 Final Projects. "Talk" with a girl. Slept 3 hours in the past 34 hours. Man, things tend to line up on me.....

Rockphed
2008-04-23, 04:13 PM
Would this "talk" be the kind where you end up regretting things you said and did while drunk, or the kind where she expresses feelings that you don't want to deal with? I suspect the second, though considering the(appearantly rampant) use of alcohol last night, the first isn't entirely out. Either way, good luck.

Haruki-kun

And yes, it's the second. The girl and I aren't in the same school, so she wasn't there last night.

Each to his/her own. I have no experience of playing in a group so we decided to keep it simple. The rest of my pieces are better. I also played the trumpet for a few years, but I didn't like my teacher so I quit. My piano teacher is more than qualified though... Let's see, what letters does he have after his name... I'm not going to advocate that everyone like all beers, it can definitely be an acquired taste, but I will say that there are so many hundreds of varieties that to lump them all together as "taste like piss" is wholly unfair. And if you've never had anything other than a macro brew (Coors, Budweiser, Miller) then you've only tasted the garbage anyway. You're clearly drinking the wrong beer.

It's like declaring all seafood is rehashed fecal matter becuase you ate at a Long John Silver's once.

:smallannoyed:

Still safe to say I only like Dark beer. I've tried several types of beers from around here, and the one I really like is "Indio", whose Wikipedia article seems to be missing. There is Corona, but......... meh.

Kneenibble, I've only just started doing exams, at around the grade 5 level, so I don't know how much help I'm going to be.
But my advice would be to stand out. The examiners get really bored, listening to piece after piece - and there isn't much selection. Make it different. Shake it up. It's just another performance, really. Even with scales, play them dramatically - you'll think you're overdoing it, but your marks will say otherwise.

EDIT: Hang on. 'Mr. Cobra' isn't a 'real live person'? I've been virtu-hugging a thing? What??? Note the extra exclamation marks. I'm serious.

Oh, that. Writing was horrible imo.

I'm not complaining about the animation. I'm complaining that it wasn't worth its budget, nor my time, because the writing is, as always with Disney, bland and unwatchable.

Meh. I enjoy a lot of them. There's also a lot of things about them that I dislike, but I can still generally enjoy most of them. As a business, I'm suspicious of Disney, but their works on their own, I like. For Fantasia alone, they deserve credit.
Also, Dali was working on something with them. How awesome is that?!

On root beer: Is that just the US equivalent to ginger beer? :smallconfused: Also, I hear tell that US beer is to Australian as Australian beer is to German (that is, substantially weaker), and also that Australian "light" beer has as much alcohol as US "full strength" beer. All this supports the idea that American beer is like making love in a canoe :smalltongue:
Personally, I haven't found a beer yet that I can drink and enjoy a whole bottle of, but I'm still looking. I've recently discovered Strongbow cider, though, and that's tasty... I've become addicted to the smell of red wine, and quite like to have a bit of that, though I still don't like white wine. Champagne's nice. Daquiris are yummy, Toblerones and other chocolate-based cocktails are awesome, and, of course:

VIVA EL TEQUILA!

Aw, CSK.
Sure, I'm happy to admit that the plots were predictable. But it's the element of whimsy, the sense of fairytale, the very real sense of grief and the naive way hope and love are portrayed that make Disney tales for me.
I guess they're bland in that the plotlines are similar, but they've mostly managed to stay sweet and childish without being unwatchably cheesy. You have to have Disney fairytales! They're so cute and sweet and light, and somehow perfect.
(I can't really comment on the budget. How they spend their money doesn't usually concern me.)

Also, everyone, I'm going for 2-3 days to a friend's bach, then school starts, so I won't be as active. Miss me lots!

After some wiki-ing, Ginger Ale (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ginger_ale) is the analogue of Ginger Beer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ginger_beer), though Ginger Beer has more ginger flavor. Root Beer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Root_beer) on the other hand is flavored with sassafras. Root Beer is generally dark brown like cola, and VERY foamy. Both Root Beer and Ginger Ale are used to make Ice Cream Floats (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_cream_soda).

I can agree with you on most of those, but cider for me is yuck :smallyuk: I think it's because I drink too fast, and so most of my experiences with cider are: almost down it/drink way too fast, feel sick from drinking it so fast, continue doing it, move onto something else (like lager, great plan), get drunk very quickly, wake up in the morning wishing I hadn't. Drinking slower might improve my disposition towards it I suppose, but still, don't like it over smoother, bitterer drinks

I disagree, they are unwatchably cheesy to me.
Also, if I want to read fairytales, I read 19th century ones. At least they can hold my interest.
But animation and television are a medium I demand a lot of. I usually only watch artsy movies or intelligent series, and will complain about things that go out of this line. Apart from that, I can watch documentaries, but that's of course nothing animation can do.

On the topic of Dali working with Disney, that only makes me lose respect for Dali. :smallwink:

About beers/alcohol: I know the alcohol percentages differ per country. Our light beer is normal in some other countries (but actually I don't know if it is also the other way around...).
I guess it depends on laws (minimum age you may legally drink, maximum alcohol contents of your blood when driving...) and may be also cultural history?

You seriously didn't know that?!
I've known for a fair bit. But to be more precise, he's the first person to have written in an easily underdstandable way - well, to modern readers. As in, I could read it in original Middle English right now and understand about three quarters of it.

You see, there is this piece of very old text that linguists are discussing which language it is.

"Hebban alla vogela nestas hagunnan, hinase ic enda tu, wat unbidan we nu?" (All birds have began nests, except you and me, what are we waiting for)

Which is definitely a west germanic language which isn't German or Frisian, it has most in common, looking at the histories of the languages, with English and Dutch. Traditionally speaking, it's said to be very old Dutch, but recently, more linguists are saying it is in fact very old English, which would then be the first english ever to be written down.

I learned something new the other day - apparently Geoffrey Chaucer was the first ever person to write in the English language. At least you didn't say that Chaucer invented half the English language (and Shakespear the other half), just wrote it down. He wouldn't go very far towards getting read by people, if the people can't understand what the Hell he's going on about cuz he's using made-up words :smallconfused: Only one man, to my knowledge, has succeeded in this, and he only really did it for one poem. Which, I might add, is awesome.

I have had my first circuit trip thingy ladies and gentlemen.
It was terrifying. My house for a while was blowing a fuse any time there was so much as a vague hint of a storm coming (and sometimes not even that). And the circuit box is outside. Not under any cover or shelter. And it usually happened at night. And we don't have a torch :smallsigh: So yeah, we've had some experience with that. The last time, I think, it wasn't a storm that caused it, and the fuse wouldn't switch back on. We unplugged everything - everything - that we could, in case something was causing it, and nothing worked. It was Friday night. I called almost every electrician in the phone book - starting with the one listed by our freaking real estate agent - and of the few who answered, none would help. One of them said he would, but he wasn't signed by the real estate agent :smallmad: The most helpful guy there? An ex-electrician, wasn't even working any more, just hadn't quit before the phone book was put out. He listened to the problem, gave some suggestions and advice, and even offered to come lend us some extension cable so we could plug the fridge into the electricity in the studio out the back (it was fine, just the house went out). When we finally got someone out the next morning, of course, the circut went back on first try :smallmad: Turned out to be the sparker on the stove that caused it :smallsigh:[/out-of-date rant]
Soooo... I feel your pain? Kinda surprising that you don't know about circuits, Jib.

At least it was just a circuit breaker. Those you can reset. Its worse when its expensive electronics that you've fried, also its a little scarier when its in the middle of lab!

Also its worse when you are cutting wires and you expect the circuit to be off and there is a huge arc across your cutting tool! F!!! yeah that'll make ya jump. But then the good side is you know you turned the breaker off then!

I had a light bulb explode at me yesterday >.< When we first moved in, that light was out, so I tried to get the bulb out but the bulb came out alone, leaving the base of it behind. I ended up getting my electrician cousin to come get it out, I think. Anyway, this time it did it again... but it turned out I hadn't actually turned the light off >.< I tried to get the lightbulb out, but somehow I just unscrewed the bulb itself from the base. There was a *CRACK*, a bright light, and the bulb was in my hand (for a moment - I threw it on a blanket on the floor cuz it startled me ), charred and blackened. Bloody scary... Bleeding house and its bleeding homemade wiring :smallannoyed:

A trick to get the base of a light bulb out of the socket when the glass comes out seperately for some reason....

Make sure the light switch is turned off then cut a potato in half and use that to unscrew the base that remains in the socket.

I've had that happen because I used to have a tendency to overtighten the bulbs when I was installing them.

Those are the new fluorescent lights that are replacing incandescent lightbulbs. Which is really, really, really stupid. Now instead of a less efficient light you have one were, if you break it, you are supposed to open all the windows in the room, vacate said room, then call the EPA for removal and disposal because it contains toxic carcinogens. BRILLIANT!

I love the new fluorescent bulbs. They put off far less heat, use WAY less electricity, give off a much more pleasant light, and last forever. In my last apartment, where I lived for four years, I put one in every light in the place and never replaced one of them. Most of those lights came to the new house too, and we're replacing all the fixed lights there with them too.

I'm incredibly incompetant.
I look intelligent, and I look like I should know exactly what I'm doing all the time.
This is a lie.
I'm clumsy, inept, and pretty much useless when it comes to basic things.
I can't cook anything but toast, I can't wash clothes. The only thing I can really do in terms of skills is clean, and that's because my OCD kicks in whenever I have to.
When I tripped the circuit I literally had no idea what had happened. I thought there had been a power outage until I found out the lights still worked, and then I decided I had fried all the electricity in the house and really started panicking.

It doesn't matter anyway. Today went so much better.

Well, if you were a gamer, you would know the cake is a lie...

Actually the cake is a form of food that is usually sweet and often baked. Cakes normally combine some kind of flour, a sweetening agent (commonly sugar), a binding agent (generally egg, though gluten or starch are often used by vegetarians and vegans), fats (usually butter, shortening, or margarine, although a fruit purée such as applesauce is sometimes substituted to avoid using fat), a liquid (milk, water or fruit juice), flavors and some form of leavening agent (such as yeast or baking powder), though many cakes lack these ingredients and instead rely on air bubbles in the dough to expand and cause the cake to rise. Cake is often frosted with buttercream or marzipan, and finished with piped borders and crystallized fruit.*
