View Full Version : Save-or-Die now Save-or-Suck

I hear alot of complaints otherwheres about how save-or-dies are bad and unfair to a gaming group. Perhaps then they should replaced with more harsh effects instead of immideate death. Stat damage for example I think is okay. I don't make ceartain things count like HP loss with constitution damage. You gained the HP already, you've watched it, you cannot unwatch it! lol... Stat damage should exist as a faster and more efficient way of killing someone.

Here's some examples:

MONSTER ABILITIES:
Bodak Gaze
Range: 30ft
Effect: As normal gaze attack, only now you make a fort save DC 15 or equal to the bodak's charisma score, whichever is greater. If the foe fails, they take a number of d6s in negative energy damage equal to the bodak's charisma score or 15. Whichever is greater. If the foe dies this way, in 1d4 minutes they become a bodak.


SPELLS:
Circle of Death
Level 6
Duration: Instanous
Components: S, M, V.
Range: Medium
Saving Throw: Fortitude negates
Spell Resistance: Yes
Effect: All those caught within the circle besides the caster take one constitution damage per caster level. (Max 20)

Finger of Death
Level 7
Duration: Instanous
Components: V, S
Range: Close
Saving Throw: Fortitude negates
Spell Resistance: Yes
Effect: Those touched by the finger of death when they fail their fortitude save are reduced to -1hp (If already at -1hp or less the spell doesn't work).
Even if they succeed, the foe takes 3d6+6 negative energy damage.

Symbol of Death
Level 8
Casting time: Ten minutes
Components: V, S, M
Saving Throw: Fortitude, see text.
Range: 0ft
Spell Resistance: Yes
Effect: Those who read the rune, say something while in the prescence of the run, or in some other way trigger the effects of the rune. Are inflicted with a curse that can be nulled with a remove curse spell.
Those under the curse of the symbol of death must make a fortitude save once every twenty-four hours or suffer 1d6+6 constitution damage.

Cloudkill
Level 5
Duration: One minute/level
Components: V, S
Range: Medium
(Cloud spreads 20ft wide and 20ft high)
Saving Throw: Fortitude see text
Spell Resistance: No
Effect: Those within the cloud vapors must make a fortitude saving every round for the duration of the spell or take 1d12 damage. Even after they leave the vapors, the deed is done, they can only hope to survive the barrage of posion vapors destroying their insides.
