View Full Version : Should I wait for 4e?

Some of you may remember me a month or two back asking what books I should get for 3.5e edition DMing. Well, I have the DM book still only, but should I wait for 4.0? I would expect the 3.5 DM book would have some use and not be completely out of date, but I am very nervous about 4.0. People are claiming it will break the game, some say it won't be as fun. What worries me is that if this edition is bad, and all the stores carry now is 4th edition, Im in trouble.

However, if I go and get the 3.5 books, and it turns out 4th edition is the most awesome thing in awesometown, I would have wasted 100 bucks on the core books.

What are all your opinions?

Wait for sure. Even if you don't like 4e, the price of 3e books will drop somewhat once 4e is out. I'm pretty positive 4e will be at least popular enough to cause that.

On the other hand, I don't think your DMG will have much "residual utility" at all as a supplement if you end up running a 4e game.

wait a while, buy the core books and play for a few months, if the 4.0 books turn out to be good then you still get use out of you're books and a garanteed winner later.

Wait. You'll still be able to get 3e books once 4e comes out, and they'll probably be cheaper too.

In the meantime, try and get involved in a 3e game to get a feel for it, so you can make the choice that's best for you when you've played both.

EDIT: ninja'd.

Alright then, I'll tell my group no campaign until probably the end of June, after I grab a summer job to help pay for college and supplies.

Definitely say wait. If you decide to go with 4e, you won't have spent all that money on 3.5. If you decide to stick with 3.5, it'll be much cheaper.

Why not try another game in the meantime? There's more than one free system out there. Spirit of the Century is one of the best games I've seen; it's a blast to play, it's a pick-up game, and all of the rules are in the SotC SRD (http://zork.net/~nick/loyhargil/fate3/fate3.html).

Adventure Quest. (http://www.aquest.com/AQJAERNdownload.htm) Try it before D&D and you will never leave.

What is so great about this system besides it being free?

Better balanced, a world that makes sense with magic, a pantheon that is explained in-game, and a better skill system.

Plus, the flavor is better.
