View Full Version : My spelling, a possible explanation and confession

Ok i've been here a while, and i post a lot, so you must be aware of my major spelling problems

Now i am one of those people who are naturally good talkers (ok, i stutter but i'm a great talker) and good writers but aren' organizing nor good spellers. I use to be a bad reader (that isn't true anymore) but i have always been a bad speller. No matter how hard i try, i just can't spell right. every time i read somebody else's work, i'm very picky about writing, but i just don't write well
I just never understood it

However today i learned that my family has a minor history of dyslexia. Some of my relatives have trouble telling left from right. So it might be a very minor case for me

Another explanation is that i write absurdly fast because i often don't have time to spend on these boards. So i tend to have spelling as a lesser necessity.

So i'm very sorry for any spelling mistakes you find in my posts, i realize i should have posted that when i first joined, but then and now that i still need to improve my spelling which i will try doing.
I can still read fine however, just be wary of spelling mistakes when reading anything i write

No problem. You have a reason for it. There are people who don't and write way worse here in the net ;)

I did think this was about the spelling of your username. But in a way that was explained too with the dyslexia thing *shrugs* To be honest I always think it's a pity when I see something as permament as a username spelled wrong like that, but well. It won't make us playgrounders like you less :)

Oh no, the user name is on purpose. That is a joke

Eh, don't worry about it, a lot of people are like that. Take me for example, much of the time I'm lucky if my writing is the the right way up, let alone not inside out (and yes it did take me about ten minutes to write this:smallbiggrin:).

I thought your username was spelled correctly.

Advice from one poor speller to another (Semidi was originally a spelling error):

Capitalize the letter "i" when using it as a first person pronoun (I walked to the park today; I'm glad I did. I've learned a lot about myself). Doing so will make your writing look much better--any other errors aside.

As an example:

Ok I’ve been here a while, and I post a lot, so you must be aware of my major spelling problems

Also, if you're going to post something for someone else to read, you might as well fix easy errors by copy and pasting it into a word processor with spellchecker (ten - thirty extra seconds tops).

Or use FireFox (which has a spell checker built in). Or find an add-on for your current browser that does so.

Yeah I agree with the spell checker idea. It shouldn't take too much time and it should catch most errors.

I agree. Just use capital letter where it should, and your spelling will look MUCH better.

I actually wondered for a while, why someone like you had such bad spelling. I shrugged it as lightning fast typing + laziness.

The latest version of Firefox automatically spell checks my posts, for some reason.

Firefox -> Extras -> Add-ons -> Spell check (https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/3366) (zu Firefox hinzufügen means "add to Firefox", Firefox is being annoying and doesn't let me get to the English version. Well, I guess you can press a big button in a foreign language)

Honestly, I had this figured out when you didn't get it when people corrected your spelling; it looked the same to you. Regardless, it's no big deal. Just take your time, use Firefox's spellchecker, and don't worry about it too much. Also, this thread is chock full of good advice I don't need to repeat, as I'm sure you'll take it.

'Tis not a problem. My GF's actually the same way. She can speak and write Amazingly well, but her spellings off on a lot of words, and I didn't understand it when I first met her but it's the same, many people in her family have that problem.

And Flame, if you want a cellmate I'll be right there next to ya :smalltongue: I was sitting here going, "Well...evil's spelled right.. *double checks*"

Cheers!

Hmmm, that Caps idea seems like something i could try that. I've never considered that

I already have spell check, and it has helped, but it isn't perfect.

Somebody like me? could you explain that?

thanks for the advice

Hm. I hope this confession is not a direct result of me asking you to correct the title of a certain thread. :smallfrown:
If so, I sincerely apologize.

I don't usually mind spelling mistakes as long as the text is easily readable. My brother has a rather severe case of dyslexia and lately – with him studying abroad – most of our communication has been written. As a result I find myself more and more lenient with respect to such. Also, on an international forum, as a non-native speaker of English I appreciate that all posts are given a certain leeway when it comes to spelling and grammar.

I tend to use much more time on my posts than I really find reasonable, and after that I compulsively re-read my posts, editing them for spelling errors. That is my problem. Just write the posts, give them a quick once-over and post them. If there are any mistakes after that, so be it. It’s an internet forum, not a job application.

P.S. The spelling and grammar in my own posts got drastically better after I lost one too many long posts from forum errors and started writing them in Word. That way I never lose them.

Edit: P.P.S. By the way, if you believe you might have a minor case of dyslexia, I would get it checked out and documented. I don't know about how it works over there, but here you can get extra time on your exams and some other advantages to offset the problems caused. My brother got a free laptop, but I think that was a special case.

Hmmmmm, oh that, no that isn't it, but thanks for your concern. It made me make the thread, but it didn't bother me.
Thanks for the apology anyways

Heh, i don't have that time sadly

How would i get that checked out? It really would helpI honestly have no idea how it works over there. Are you in school or some other kind of educational institution? If so, I would contact some kind of student councellor and ask about it. Usually this person will be able to refer you to some kind of specialist who can document if you have dyslexia and how strong it is.

If you are an avid reader and writer you may have some problems convincing teachers and counsellors that there is a need for seeing a specialist at all, since many people tend to see dyslexia as a factor which defines your reading and writing skills, instead of just a modifier.

Of course, there may not be any aid available, depending on local rules and regulations. Or more likely, there will be some, but there is a certain administrative lack of willingness to actually apply it.

Edit: I found a site that has a page on the symptoms (http://www.dyslexia-teacher.com/t7.html), assessment (http://www.dyslexia-teacher.com/t9.html) and contact info (http://www.dyslexia-teacher.com/North_Carolina.html) for North Carolina. If you are from North Carolina, that is, I can't really remember where I got that from.

Oh don't worry; it's no big deal. Bit uncomfortable to read (especially with your tendency to post huge walls of text) but I wouldn't say anyone is bothered too much by your spelling. So no biggie, and I myself wouldn't even think of holding it against you. It's not like I don't mess up my grammar on a daily basis....

We still hate you for a lot of other things, of course, but about this, don't fret it :smalltongue:

I'm actually dyslexic too, it's harder to tell though since my spelling is usually okay.

However, I read things as... well, usually what they aren't. I thought your user name, for example, was spelled right, and I've read "absentee hotline" as "absinthe," so you can imagine what sorts of fun I run into on a daily basis.

Hehe, I have a lot of difficult words I know of, but can't pronounce - but I try anyway and if I get a blank look I assume something went wrong. :smallwink:

And as for spelling, one should try to do ones best - and not frown upon others (if it's not unreadable that is). Good luck with it, as long as you learn anything new each day it has been fruitfull.
