Ask.com keeps taking over when I try to go to a site :smallmad: It seems to do it especially a lot with icanhascheezburger.com, but it's doing it with Deviant Art, too. Basically, I go to Favourites, Entertainment, icanhascheezburger.com with the same URL it always has there... and instead I get a freaking Ask.com search :smallsigh: I did a Google search for icanhascheezburger, and it took me to Ask. I tried clicking on the link that Ask itself came up with, which took me to one page of cheezburger, but then when I tried to go to another page on the site it took me straight back to Ask again :smallfurious: How the Hell do I make it stop?! ARGH!

:smalleek::smalleek:Oooh, I know. I had a hard case on the old PC and have a lighter new infection with Ask.com on this new one.
I took my usual solution and switched again from Internet Explorer to Opera(which I prefer anyway).
(So, yeah, at the moment I'm lazy and avoid it instead of kicking it out)

But for getting rid of it: Spybot (http://www.safer-networking.org/de/) is normally a good, regularly updated freeware program against hijackers, ads and so on which also immunizes your system(also available in English).
In my case, I still got ask.com sometimes, though it was reduced through spybot.
(EDIT:I prefer Spybot, but Ad-aware (http://lavasoft.com/) is also very good and free in it's simpler form. They are the two standard anti-malwares, at least here around. What one doesn't find, the other does.)

But in your case, the weapon of choice may first and important be http://www.hijackthis.de/

Again, it is a German site, but English versions exists. It analyses where the hijackers are sitting. If you lack the knowledge to analyse the logfile yourself, just post it in their forum. The guys there are quick and helpful.

If you have problems understanding something on the websites despite their english versions, I'd be happy to help translate.

I've had to wrassle many an infection on my friends computers into submission. Try here http://spywarewarrior.com/ they can be quite helpful.

Theyre incredibly busy so it may take a few days (make sure you read the rules on teh 72 hour bump thread). Have you downloaded any toolbars? They're usually loaded with spyware or problems.

Spybot. Adaware. Clamwin. AVG. Avast. Install those five, update them and run their scans. They should take care of most infections.

As for your browser, if you use Firefox then download the NoScript and AdBlockPlus (Either that or it's called AdBlockerPlus, I forget) addons. There are a couple of others that I use but I installed them ages ago and forgot their names.

My friend has this, and it can be quite annoying when you're trying to find out something, and then it goes to the Google homepage. It's a bit more sever on his though, because it happens all the time. I tried to watch some Youtube videos and it went to the Google homepage. I'd suggest getting what the people suggested above, free ad/spy-ware protection. Should help.

P.S. Do you think that the protection stuff will help him too? I think he already has something like this but I'm not sure.

Yes. Aside from the obvious result of getting rid of the infections he currently has, Spybot has an option that lets you immunise your system (It fixes exploits and the like) to prevent further infection.

have you tried googling how to get rid of it?

other than that i'd try just "Ctrl,Alt, Del"ing and seeing if there is a process called ask or something to that effect and stopping it

these malware things are a real pain

It's easier to use software (The programs I mentioned have been marked with the Blayze Seal of Approval for not screwing up your system) to get rid of malware.

I second Blayze's suggestion of Avast, it works wonders and should stop whatever problems ou have, you'll also notice a big difference in performance and it mostly works behind the scenes after the first scan so you probably won't know it's there.

Computer malware problems that redirect you to Ask.com?

I know where you can find help.

First, go to Ask.com and type in your query....

I had this problem a while ago. Formatted my computer.

Just install Nod32. I think it is the best
