I want to homebrew a fantasy game, but I don't want to invent the whole world from scratch. What I'd like is a pre-existing setting with maps and general background information on various countries, cities, trade routes, etc. I don't need stats or adventure hooks, and I don't want it to be too heavily "flavoured". So Faerun, for example, would be out. I want to add my own flavour.

Does such a product exist? If so, who publishes it and where can I find it? Electronic sources preferred, but I'll deal with archaic paper books if I must!

Sounds like you basically want a geography to save you having to make up lands, countries, names etc. I can appreciate that. You can probably get most of what you want just by looking up "Greyhawk" on Wikipedia and googling for maps and other online resources. It's an old setting that was sort of the pseudo-default for 3e (the PHB gods are from there), and it's quite the generic fantasy world. The sort of summaries WP provides should cover your needs.

There you go, feel free to use it if you like it. Just, you know, let me know if you do, I'd like to see how it goes, what you change and what happens etc. It's not complete, but hopefully complete enough that you can fill in the holes.

Depending on how complex you want it, you could try going for Birthright (an old ADnD setting, which never really catch on I think). Google around.

What you want is the Greyhawk Gazetteer (http://home.flash.net/~brenfrow/3e/gaz.htm). It was entirely produced with 'generic fantasy, add your own details' in mind. Combine that with a copy of A Magical Medieval Society - Western Europe (http://www.xrpshop.citymax.com/catalog/item/3906392/5809577.htm) and you will be pretty much set. I absolutely recommend both products.

Faerūn is flavored? WTH? Greyhawk is the only setting that's more generic.

Too much magic. I want a low magic world. If magic is sugar, then Faerun is a sugar cookie, when I'm trying to make a loaf of bread and just need a spoonful of sugar to make the yeast rise.

Aren't you thinking of eberron?

You may want to look into Goodman Games (http://www.goodman-games.com/index.php) and especially their Gazetteer of the Known Realms (http://www.goodman-games.com/5034preview.php) for your generic needs.

I love the Dungeon Crawl Classic modules, they remind me of my earliest days playing D&D way, WAY back in the early 1980's.

Nope. Eberron has magic all over the place, true, but few mages are above 3rd level--there's exactly one person over level 15, and she loses her powers if she leaves the Church of the Flame. Faerūn has just as much magic--more, with epic spellcasters on every street-corner--even if they don't think about the realistic consequences of that magic surplus.
