Should a member of a nonhumanoid race ever make it to 20th level in dread necromancer, does that character gain the benefits of the lich template even though it isn't normally a valid choice?

Sure, why not? Generic rules (only humanoids can be liches) are trumped by specific rules (...unless they're a level 20 dread necromancer). Happens all the time in rulebooks.

I'd allow it. After all, by 20th level, the Dread Necro has acheived most of the template's traits already.

simple argument being the dracolich

I think by RAW it's illegal. I'd allow it myself though.

The Dracolich is a really bad example, because it's a separate template, specifically designed for dragons.

uhhhh......

A dread necromancer who is not humanoid does not gain
this class feature.

From heros of horror, bottom of the lich transformation description.

I'd give it to them. I mean, you get dragon liches and illithid liches, why not, say, a Thri-kreen lich (although why is it playing a dread necromancer!?)

I agree with the people who said they'd let non-humanoids get the template (it fits with the class, and it's not as if it would really have a detrimental impact on the gameplay).

What's the most ridiculously cheesy race one could use for this?

Play it in gestalt with ninja/pirate on the other side. You will win by sheer force of awesomeness.

I appologise for my last ill informed post (in light of the previous 2 posts, I think that the Lich template rule should only be applied to creatures who were alive or unhdead in the first place).

Warforged are Living Constructs...

That is a good point (This is why I'd make an awful DM:smalltongue:). Would it work if the class feature in question only applied to creatures which could be raised using Animate Dead? I don't think there are any loopholes there.
