View Full Version : The Nature of Gods and Banjo

As I see it, gods can arise through any number of mechanisms. A warrior can become mighty enough and inspire enough awe, some abstract thing such as fear or hate can end up being anthropomorphized, some minor spirit of rocks and lichens can attract the praise of some shepherd up in the mountains.

But I am certain of one thing: the first days of a god's ascension can effect its innate nature. A god of the sea may be a benign protector of vessels or a wrathful creature of storms and tidalwaves depending on its factors of creation. This scares me because, if Banjo is forced to accept human sacrifice, he might be tainted.

Imagine a white skeletal figure clad as a jester, his eyes something like Ryuk's as seen in Death Note. He sits perched atop a steeple overlooking a burning city... cackling and plucking notes of madness as accompaniment.*

It... worries me.

*I might actually end up using this in one of my campaigns.

This is non-sequitor, but looking at your avatar I just had to post this
He knows when you are sleeping,
He knows when you're on the can,
He'll hunt you down and blast your ass from here to Pakistan
You better not breathe, You better not move,
You're better off dead I'm telling you dude!
Santa Claus is gunning you down!

That's the baddest Clown-God ever.
It's almost scary.
I go now to draw it.
And here it is. (http://ninjamuffin13.deviantart.com/art/Oots-Banjo-85879588)

He'd be like an ultra-powered Joker. With a banjo.

That is a good point (if that's true, it could answer some questions about The Dark One).

Banjo is the god of puppets. Not controlling puppets, being a puppet. His nature is whatever the cleric wants it to be. It's ultimate laissez faire religion.

That is actually a good point (there is a chance that he could change into a god of puppeteering, though).

Heh. It happens in Forgotten Realms all the time. How many "Supreme Godess of Magic" we had thus far? 8?

Evil clown god of puppets is so going in my campaign.

Not a huge fan of clerics, but if I ever make one I know what my deity is going to be.

No! Banjo!
----------

But I think that Elan controls Banjo more than Therkla, even if she was his first voice. I think Banjo will be a CG god of puppets, who will protect those who are used*, not be used himself. U feel if anyone controls him it will be whoever wears him. That would be AWESOME! That's it, whoever is wearing him controls his actions, however he suggests things to his bearer as well, functioning as a greater artifact, despite being a god as well. :smallamused:

*Not like that to any perverts out there, although I guess it could mean... Nevermind. Stop distracting me!

A schemer pulls threads behind the scenes; a well-crafted lie here, a drop of poison there, a wink and a nudge. He thinks he is the puppeteer... master of the kingdom, unseen just backstage. But he becomes ensnared in his own threads of intrigue, pushed and pulled by forces he does not understand. Who is the puppet and who is the master when the threads are snarled?

There are many things which might fall under Banjo's domain, though most center around the concept of control. Control, its sundering, its perversion. The clown is a thing that mocks you and wears a cloak of sad irony, a testament to the knowledge that dignity is a fleeting illusion. Read Discworld for the whole schpiel.

Nice, though I was certainly picturing him a little different. I'll load my own picture later tonight.

That is a good point (if that's true, it could answer some questions about The Dark One).
Indeed. He was the god of an angry people drunk on the distant possibility of revenge. Goblins were hunted things who new from childhood that their end would be messy, painful, certain, and soon. They wanted the tables turned, man and elf and dwarf and gnome made to feel what it is like to be goblin.

We can all imagine what that might produce.

I'll have to agree with bluish_wolf. Banjo's earliest attempts show a almost whorish attempt at garnering new recruits. I mean grabbing an evil and good sentient while almost grabbing a neutral, how many gods can claim that?

EDIT: Then again the temp merge with Cthulhu...

In other words Banjo is going to grow up to be Wee Jas's boyfriend?
That should be interesting. She always wanted someone submissive.

If Wee Jas existed in the OotS world, that would be disturbing. His Domains would probably be Trickery, Illusion, Destiny, Domination, Fate, and Chaos (and possibly Evil at this rate). http://www.crystalkeep.com/d20/rules/DnD3.5Index-Spells-ClericalDomains.pdf contains information on the Domains which I just mentioned.

Wee Jas has suffered from more changes over the years than any other diety.
Check (http://www.canonfire.com/cfhtml/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=578)these (http://www.canonfire.com/cfhtml/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=579) links. (http://www.canonfire.com/cfhtml/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=580)

FYI: Wee Jas is female... and a hottie at that.

I know Wee Jas is female and that she's changed a lot over the years (I have a LE Halfling Beguiller character who worships her). My Domain list was the list which I'd personally give to Banjo rather then what Wee Jas' Domains would be in OotS.
