NEW THREAD (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?602695-Setting-Up-A-Custom-Avatar)

This guide is intended to lay out the steps necessary to set up a custom avatar to display on each of your posts. It is suggested you read over the avatar and signature rules (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/announcement.php?a=39) before you get started so that you don't run into any problems later.

The guide assumes you already have an appropriate avatar image and have uploaded it to appropriate webspace. General information about these steps is provided in Appendices A & B.

Part 1: Get the URL & Image Variables
Make sure you have the image's URL address. Have it open in a separate window or copy/pasted into a document so you can grab it easily.

The image URL needs to be complete - this means you must include the http:// prefix, and have the full address to the exact file (usually this ends with the file extension type). Make sure there are no spaces (%20) or other special characters in the address (other than dashes or underscores; -,_). Many times the URL will be case sensitive as well.

Also make sure you have the height and width of the image in pixels handy.

Part 2: Bring up Custom Avatar Options
From any page on the GiantITP forums, click on the User CP option in the upper right toolbar.

http://www.gorbashkazdar.com/avatarguide/usercp.gif

This will bring up your control panel where you can adjust numerous options. In the Control Panel on the right, under the first section Settings & Options, click on Edit Options (it should be the last in the list).

http://www.gorbashkazdar.com/avatarguide/editoptions.gif

Scroll down to the last section, Miscellaneous Options.

http://www.gorbashkazdar.com/avatarguide/miscoptions.gif

Part 3: Set Your Variables
Under the Avatar section of Miscellaneous Options, click the toggle next to Custom.

http://www.gorbashkazdar.com/avatarguide/avatarcustom.gif

Now, under Custom Avatar URL, paste or type in the URL of the image.

http://www.gorbashkazdar.com/avatarguide/avatarurl.gif

Under Custom Avatar Width, enter the width of the image in pixels.

http://www.gorbashkazdar.com/avatarguide/pixwidth.gif

Under Custom Avatar Height, enter the height of the image in pixels.

http://www.gorbashkazdar.com/avatarguide/pixheight.gif

Lastly, click on Save Changes.

http://www.gorbashkazdar.com/avatarguide/save.gif

You should now be brought back to the main Control Panel page.

To make sure the avatar is entered correctly, go find a post you have recently made. The image should now show next to your posts.

Part 4: Troubleshooting
If you image is not showing up, first make sure the site has fully reloaded and is not simply pulling from your browser cache (press Ctrl+F5 to force a complete reload of the page).

If the image still does not show up, go back to Miscellaneous Options and make sure all the image variables are entered correctly. Any incorrect values, such as having the height or width off by a pixel or the a typo in the URL, will prevent the image from showing up.

The image URL is usually case sensitive - if there are any capitalizations, make sure to have these match.

The board software does not support spaces or most special characters. These will show up as '%##' in the URL; spaces are %20 and are the most common problem in a URL that prevents an avatar from showing up. Dashes or underscores (-,_) are allowed; remove any spaces or replace them with these characters.

Make sure the image actually is a .gif, a .jpg, or a .png. If it is not, you will need to convert it into one of these formats or find another image.

Finally, try opening the image in a separate window to make sure it shows up at all. Your hosting site may be down, the image may not have uploaded correctly or have been deleted, or something else may be preventing the image from loading at all.

If none of this corrects the problem, please feel free to ask for help.

Appendix A: Acquire an Avatar
Acquiring a custom avatar is actually relatively easy. You can check out the custom avatar request (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33589) and avatar adoption (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26936) threads for OotS style avatars, or you can always make your own.

On the GiantITP forums, you may use a .gif, .jpg, or .png image. The image can have a width of 20-120 pixels, and a height of 20-120 pixels. The forums default to 117x117.

To double check these variables to make sure an image would fit within the rules, on most browsers right click (or Control + click on most Apples) on the image and select 'Properties.' This will display the image height and width in pixels, its URL, and its size. Right clicking generally also allows you to save the image. Some websites disable right clicking on images, however.

.gif and .png images both support transparency, while .jpg does not. Also please keep in mind that animated .gif images are not allowed as avatars.

Appendix B: Uploading the Image
You need to upload the image to a separate hosting service; the GiantITP forums do not allow you to upload directly to our server.

Free solutions include PhotoBucket (http://www.photobucket.com) and ImageShack (http://www.imageshack.com), both of which are commonly used throughout the forums. If you have your own server space or other location you can upload to, you may certainly use that as well. These free sites are generally very simple to use and off their own tutorials. Generally, simply select the Upload option, click Browse when it asks you for the file path of the image, find the image on your computer, select it, and upload. After the image uploads, it should provide the image's URL for hotlinking.

Keep in mind that you will be 'hotlinking' the image from this space, so make sure this is allowed. Many free website hosting services do not allow image hotlinking, which will cause an error image to show up. Worse is hotlinking from someone's personal site without permission - not only is this considered impolite, many webmasters discourage this behavior by setting up obscene or insulting 'trap' images that replace hotlinked images. It is always encouraged that you get your own webspace to host any images you intend to use. Some avatar artists will allow you to hotlink from their hosts, but again it is better to set up your own space.

Hi.

Appendix A: Acquire an Avatar
[spoiler]
On the GiantITP forums, you may use a .gif, .jpg, or .png image. The image can have a width of 20-120 pixels, and a height of 20-120 pixels. The forums default to 117x177.

I just noticed the thread, and read it, even though I know how to.
I noticed that in the last line in one of the second last paragraph of Appendix A you mistyped 117X177, as you know(I know you do:smalltongue:) and as you said previously in that thread, its 117X117. Just for the case somebody gets confused about it. Just pointing it out.

Well, have fun.

When I tried going directly the URL indicated by the "Properties" of the "no image found" red X (http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/4186/helfbardzgl.png), there was nothing there. Could there be a problem with your image upload or your Imageshack account?

Have you uploaded the image to a hosting site somewhere on the internet? If not, that's your problem.

Just go to any photo-hosting site (I use Photobucket (http://www.photobucket.com)), create an account, and follow the instructions on how to upload files. Once you'd done so, you should be able to easily find the URL of your image, which is what you put in here to make your avatar show up.

The Custom Avatar URL field doesn't want to accept my photobucket image.
I set up a photobucket account, loaded a couple of pictures, viewed the image that I want to use as my avatar and copied the address.

When I put the address into the Custom Avatar URL field, it doesn't accept it, saying:
"You did not enter the correct format for the Custom Avatar URL field. Please read the field description for the expected format."

Here's the address (is the format ok? or do I need to do any additional steps to access the picture by itself? I'm new to photobucket and this is my first custom avatar):

How doeso ne go about creating a pimped out OOTS style avatar?
Pick a graphics program, start drawing. Then practice until you can create something you'd be willing to show people online.
I recommend Inkscape (www.inkscape.org/), and taking a look at Trazoi's Inkscape guide for OotS avatars. If you have any specific Inkscape questions check The Inkscape Help Thread to see if it's already been answered.

or contact someone who knows how to make those?
There's the Avatar Adoption Center (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26936) and the Request an OotS Style Avatar Thread (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=122056). Those are the traditional places to look/ask.

Well, the current problem is that you've entered the truncated URL (complete with ellipsis) into the Custom Avatar field, which is why it's not displaying.
Regarding the "wrong format" message, try changing the name of your "oots Avatars" folder, I suspect that the board doesn't like the space. When I tried uploading the image to another site (http://i49.tinypic.com/2hcf5ag.png) and setting it as my avatar it worked fine.

Keris
2010-02-01, 10:51 PM
You made it in Inkscape, yes? When you get to the Export Dialogue, make sure you have just your avatar selected and click Export Area: Selection. Then adjust the dimensions under Bitmap size so that the largest dimension is 120px, change the filename and export.
Edit: Scratch that, I just now see that you got your avatar from the request thread.
Anyway, when you upload, make sure not to check the "resize image?" tickbox. And if you're uploading via a URL, make sure that you've just got the url of the image. I'm not sure what exactly went wrong when you uploaded, but I put it up on Imageshack for you anyway. Here:

The guide should note that you can find the dimensions of an image via right click->Properties (changed to view image info in the latest version of Firefox for some reason).

Your problem seems to be that the file is named "whatever.png.jpg" (it's named "whatever.png" but it's actually a jpg, so the .jpg filename extension is added).

Try removing the .png from the name and reuploading.

I believe the reason may be that you have a space in the image name. Try renaming it without the space.

I believe the reason may be that you have a space in the image name. Try renaming it without the space.

That's not a space that's an underscore. I think the problem is that the image is named with ".png" but it's a .jpeg file. Remove the .png and it might work. Alternatively, actually convert it to a .png so it will support transparency.

Elder Tsofu
2010-07-04, 03:26 PM
Well the forumsoftware seem to remove the underscore and some around the % from the address he is displaying.

The url you use atm:
http://lh5.ggpht.com/VNsRqOWzhhw/TC9wqEBFp-I/AAAAAAAAAFU/lf-3u7K-1Jg/s800/Warlock3.png.jpg

The url he used:
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_VNsRqOWzhhw/TC9wqEBFp-I/AAAAAAAAAFU/lf-3u7K-1Jg/s800/Warlock%203.png.jpg

Try downloading the image and host it on a photobucket account rather than direct-linking.
(its safer that way )

Vaynor
2010-07-04, 03:42 PM
I'm not seeing that. Here's what he posted, underscore and all.

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_VNsRqOWzhhw/TC9wqEBFp-I/AAAAAAAAAFU/lf-3u7K-1Jg/s800/Warlock%203.png.jpg

Edit: Not sure which one you're referring to, they both have the underscores though, and these exact addresses lead to the correct avatar (although both have the same transparency problem from being a .jpeg):

http://lh3.ggpht.com/_1bSmxrOHYcs/TCYA416RxKI/AAAAAAAABME/ggrulbk7RPs/s800/witch%20hunter2.png.jpg

Or is that not what you meant?

And if the forum software removes underscores from URLs when entered into the custom avatar field, my avatar shouldn't work since it contains an underscore.

I still believe that the avatars need to have the .png removed from the image name and be converted to .png/.gif files before uploading.

In fact, I'm going to go ahead and convert/upload them myself, I'll edit this post momentarily.

Here they are, these links should work (click the pictures for the link):

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c83/Vaynor/witch-hunter2.gif (http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c83/Vaynor/witch-hunter2.gif)

Elder Tsofu
2010-07-04, 04:47 PM
That's the one he'd posted yes, but it isn't the one his blank box is showing.
The first one in my quote is the address to the blank box below the username (an invalid adress) while the last is the one the avatarist used to show the image.
Maybe the problem is that the underscore was right after an /?
And that the software think that the first two numbers after an % is some sort of a command?
Just a theory.

(should probably have elaborated instead of posting more or less the quote of the suggested answer to the question in the request thread)

Vaynor
2010-07-04, 05:32 PM
Oh, I didn't think to check the actual link for the avatar. It could be that the forum somehow negated those characters, but I think it is more likely that he is simply using a faulty link. Anyhow, my links should work fine, I've removed any possible compatibility issues.

Can one of the things be 120?
Yes, both can. I should have phrased it as "less than or equal to 120px in both dimensions".

Although the issue with your avatar is that there is no "www.Paladin.jpg". You need to upload the image to any of a variety of image hosting services (such as TinyPic (http://www.tinypic.com/), Photobucket (www.photobucket.com) or ImageShack (imageshack.us)) and then enter the provided URL (often described as the Direct Link).

Edit:
Although you might want to first request that Ninjaman re-upload the avatar somewhere else. The one he posted for you has the filename "Paladin.png.jpg", which probably means that it's a PNG file that was converted to a JPEG by whatever upload site he used. PNG is much better format than JPEG for OotS style images.

I don't know if this will work or not, but I can not get this URL to work http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Canis_lupus_265b.jpg I tried removing the underscores, and that did not work. I so wish that the custom avatar were not so sensitive, or would at least permit you to upload it from your computer!

First: that image is huge. As such, you need to make it smaller if possible to make it fit.

Second: you really should not use avatars on sites you do not own, or that are not on an account of yours on a picture sharing site.

Third: you're linking to a website, not an image. This (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/5a/Canis_lupus_265b.jpg/800px-Canis_lupus_265b.jpg) is the link to the image.

What you need is a Photobucket or Imageshack account. Whenever you want to upload avatars or pics into this forum, save them to your hard drive, put them in the Photobucket account, and use that link. That way you won't have to worry about the image disappearing or anything like that.

EDIT: Also, as Rose Dragon said, that image is huge. The forum doesn't resize them for you. =/ You'll have to do that yourself.

There's an easier way, actually. Just go to your album, where the picture is stored, put the cursor on the picture, and select the "Direct Link". Copy it and that's it!

Once again, any help would be greatly appreciated. Is it that you want it to be larger? If so, you'll just need to resize it. Using photobucket you can do it easily enough. Just click on it, click resize, and then make it 34 x 120 and click apply. That probably won't center it in the avatar box for you, but at least it'll fill from top to bottom.

Another option would be to open a 120x120 canvas on MS Paint/Photoshop/Inkscape/your program of choice, resize it, and put it in the center of the picture. Then save it and use the new picture, instead.

Well, I got it to work, but after seeing how small it appears at max pixels, I think I will just forget about it.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "doesn't fit in the linkbar" :smallconfused: I've never had trouble with long URLs; I just copy and paste them in. The only thing I can think of is check to make sure you don't have [img] or [url] tags around it -- that makes it say that the image is in the wrong format (or something similar).

I believe that you will most likely run into problem number 2 if it did fit, that the folder name you use on photobucket contain spaces. If I remember correctly the board software is allergic to them and refuse to show the avatars from the folders in question.

So to kill two birds with one stone I suggest this:
Change the album-name on photobucket to something without spaces which is also shorter than the current name. "Oots" or "OotsArtwork" are two possible candidates.
You can also create a new album if that works better.

You don't need to set height and width anymore.

Make sure what you're entering in the URL field starts with "http" and ends with ".pgn", ".jpg" or ".gif". Not "" and "" (that always messes me up!). Where are you hosting your image? Sometimes the URL the hosting site gives doesn't work right and you need to rightclick the image and get the URL there. If you're still having trouble and you want to post your image here, we can take a look and see if we can figure out the URL for you.

You seem to have your avatar set up correctly on this end. Your avatar is set to http://cassandra.physics.montana.edu/chronos.gif , which is the proper format. That address is a real internet address (it maps to 153.90.194.99 and that address does respond to pings). However, my PC can't connect to the webserver on your machine. It looks like something is blocking people outsude Montana State from connecting to it. Probably trying to stop people hosting music or other copyrighted content without permission.

You could try hosting the webserver on a different port (see http://homepage.mac.com/car1son/change_apache_port.html ) and then modify the URL to point to that port, but it still might not work.

You have the image uploaded into a photobucket folder with a space in the folder name ("Audiophile gear"). Rename the folder to remove the space and the new url should work.

On a related note, that avatar will be too big -- it is currently 200x244 px and the maximum size is 120x120 px. If you don't resize it, you will only be seeing the top left corner.

If you say what you tried maybe we can help :smallwink:

But from what I see I think you tried to specify a local file (since your link just points to just "battlemindhuy.png" - which does not what you want, it points to the website "battlemindhuy" on the top-level-domain "png" (which isn't a used top-level domain - so the link just gives a "server not found" or something like that)).

So probably you need to upload it somewhere (your own webspace if you have, or something like ImageShack or PhotoBucket [see the first post for some more details on it]), and than using the direct link to the file (so something like http://sometihng.site.xy/path/to/file.gif)

You mean the image-editing program (http://getpaint.net/)? I don't think they have hosting, and it certainly isn't integrated into saving, and the site paint.net (http://paint.net/) seems to be unrelated as well. I'd recommend uploading to some hosting site like photobucket or whatever.

Once you've uploaded the image, click on the "Direct" link on the right side of the image's photobucket page (clicking on the image in your gallery or the upload screen should take you there, if you're having trouble). Otherwise, you could right click the image and select "copy image location".

Savannah
2014-02-17, 03:17 AM
GitP doesn't like spaces in Photobucket folder names. You'll need to actually rename the folders to something without spaces. Once you've done that, use the direct link listed in the "links to share this photo" not the link you've posted here. I'm not sure if the link will still be too long, but I know both of those are issues Photobucket users have had in the past.

ChristianSt
2014-02-17, 05:05 AM
Yeah, first of all there seems to be troubles with spaces (so you would need to provide a link without spaces; masking them with "%20" didn't work for me).

On top of that it seems that the form limits links to 100 characters, so you also need to shorten that link. So the easiest way would be to create a short folder without spaces and add it on the top level of your Photobucket account.

Certain kind of url shortening/redirecting stuff could maybe work, but I'm not certain on that part and it might be hard to get it the way you want it. So putting the picture somewhere else in your Photobucket account where it produces a shorter link without spaces is way easier (and should work in all cases).

PS: If you have other files in your Photobucket-folder and linked them somewhere else (or you have this avatar linked to from another site), you should not rename, unless you want to change all those links. Editing/Moving a folder (name) will change all direct links! So to be safe just copy your image in a suiting (e.g newly created) folder.

Thanks! What you said to do worked out pretty well.

I was wondering how I could get rid of all the white space in my custom pic. It would just look so much better without it...

Trouble is I have not idea how to make the white transparent.

For what it's worth, I used GraphicsGale to draw it.

Savannah

You'll have to draw it on a transparent background and save it in a file that supports transparency (you've got it as a .png now, so your file format is good -- you just need to use a transparent background instead of a white background).

Hello

I have a problem with changing avatars. I got a costume avatar before the remake of the forum, and now that I thought of changing to it there seems to be a problem. I only have the already checked option of “Do not use an avatar” – nothing else. Which is also strange since I can clearly see the avatar I’m using at the moment…
(I followed the FAQ-link since I could not find the Edit Avatar)

Have the policy for avatars changed? Or are there some technical issues? Or am I simply missing something?

Thank you

Sorry, it turns out I was following a bad link... my bad

This thread is awesome because nearly everyone got their issues fixed and has a cool custom avatar. That being said, how can I eliminate the white background on mine?

Depends on what is actually the problem you have. :smallwink:

There are basically two solutions:

Upload a version with a transparent background. I don't know whether your source file has a white or a transparent background, but in all cases you need a file format that actually supports transparency. .jpg (as you have right now) doesn't support it, so you need to use .png or .gif. Both work fine.
If for some reason you are restricted to .jpg or have trouble to figure out how to set your background to transparent (though it should be doable - even if you only have that .jpg file it should be possible with Gimp or other image processing software to set it to transparent.), you could also cheat a bit and change your white background to the color of the user info background color. (Which should be #F0E7D3 )

So it is possible that you have a usable source file but exported it to the wrong file format or it is even possible that you have the right file but the pace you uploaded it changed it. In the latter case (if it gets automatically converted to .jpg) you either need to change the place you upload it (both PhotoBucket and ImageShack should work for that) or use the colored background workaround.

Unfortunately the OP of this thread is a bit outdated. There was a forum upgrade recently and the details have changed a bit. (For example there is no size option either, though that was changed even before the upgrade.)

You need to be on the Desktop Site to edit your avatar (or options in general), so if you are on the Mobile Site, you need to Switch to the Full Site. A link for that should be on the bottom of each page. (If you want to switch back afterwards, the Desktop Site has a theme-drop-down-menu on the bottom left of each page.)
On the top right corner on each peach you see "Welcome, YourUserNameHere // Notifications // My Profile // Settings // Log Out". Click on Settings (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/usercp.php?styleid=2)
On the left side, you find three boxes with different contents (My Messages // My Subscriptions // My Settings). Click on General Settings (www.giantitp.com/forums/profile.php?do=editoptions&styleid=2), which can be found in My Settings -> My Account.
The avatar options are the last three options on that page, so scroll to the bottom.
Change whatever you want to change and save your changes using the Save Changes button.

(You should also be able to use the links I posted.)

To upload stuff to photobucket you don't need any special software (other than a regular browser).

To make a avatar you can use any image processing program you want to use or are familiar with. Free options are GIMP (www.gimp.org) or Inkscape (http://www.inkscape.org/en/). If you want a stick figure avatar Inkscape is probably the better choice, because it is a vector based program, but I haven't used it, so I can't say anything about it.

And probably this sort of questions is better be asked in the Arts and Crafts subforum (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?27-Arts-and-Crafts), too :smallwink:

The maximum avatar size is 120x120 px. Yours is 120x150, so you need to crop and/or resize it to be 30 pixels smaller in height. If someone created it for you, you can ask them to edit it, or if you created it yourself, edit it in whatever program you used to make it. Some hosting sites also allow you to edit a hosted picture, but as far as I know, ImageShack is not one of them (may be worth double checking, though, as it's been a while since I used it).

If you only have an iPad, I don't know the answer, sorry. I do know that there are image editors which can resize it for you, some free, some not, but I do all my editing on the computer. You can also upload it to a site which allows you to resize the image after upload. But, again, I do all my editing myself on the computer, so I couldn't tell you which sites do that.

Unfortunately the OP is a bit outdated (it was done before the forum software updated, and even then it was out of date). The Avatar & Signature Rules can be found as part of the regular Forum Rules (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/announcement.php?a=1) (which can normally be found in the upper region of each forum page).

Avatar & Signature Rules
The total width of images in your signature may not exceed 470 pixels. This may be comprised of one or more images.

The total height of images in your signature may not exceed 120 pixels. This may be comprised of one or more images.

Any images in a spoiler may not exceed 300 pixels high by 470 pixels wide.

Total height of your signature may not exceed 12 lines or equivalent. A smaller font may allow additional lines and a larger font will count against multiple lines. A 120 pixel high image is equivalent to 8 lines, a spoiler with no blank lines around it is equivalent to 2 lines. Please be aware of text wrapping as long lines will count as multiple lines at our discretion.

The maximum size for any avatar is 50kb.

The maximum total size for your avatar and every image in your signature, including those in spoilers cannot exceed 300kb.

Avatars and signature images must be static (ie. not animated). Animated avatars or signature images will be subject to immediate removal.

Animated images are still allowed as post content (preferably in a spoiler) but not in your signature or as an avatar as they detract from the rest of the forums when they are attached to every post.

Also, please note that if a change is made to your signature or avatar either directly by a moderator or by way of a moderator request, changing it back to something that does not comply with these rules would lead to an infraction. This falls under the existing rules regarding changing moderator made edits or ignoring/disregarding a moderator.

Copyrighted Material and OotS Images
Using copyrighted artwork as an avatar is technically illegal unless you have the permission of the copyright holder. Even if the art is modified in some way, the original copyright still stands and you can't use it as an avatar. Rich Burlew has specifically requested that people DO NOT use his OOTS art as avatar image, other than those he has specifically provided as the default message board avatars. Also, please do not take, alter, or use the provided avatar images, comic images, or other pieces of Rich's art without express consent. If you want an OOTS-style avatar, there are many burgeoning avatar artists hanging around the Arts and Crafts forum who might make one for you.

Any avatar image that is found to be used without the permission of the copyright holder will be removed. If the creator of an avatar personally approaches the GITP staff and claims that their creation is being used without permission by another poster--as might be the case if they requested credit for the avatar and then were denied such--the Moderators will remove the avatar immediately. The first instance of this will incur a Warning, but should the member reinstate his or her violating avatar or create another avatar that also violates the rules, he or she will be issued an Infraction.

As for resizing Avatars, that is no longer an option. if you want to change the dimensions of your Avatar you have to change/edit the file directly.

This will bring up your control panel where you can adjust numerous options. In the Control Panel on the right, under the first section Settings & Options, click on Edit Options (it should be the last in the list).

Scroll down to the last section, Miscellaneous Options.

Part 3: Set Your Variables
Under the Avatar section of Miscellaneous Options, click the toggle next to Custom.

Now, under Custom Avatar URL, paste or type in the URL of the image.

Under Custom Avatar Width, enter the width of the image in pixels.

Under Custom Avatar Height, enter the height of the image in pixels.

Lastly, click on Save Changes.

1) Why is there no upload allowed?

2) Why does the site not have a mechanism for resizing images properly.

3) Why does the site not allow direct link urls that have too many characters?

1) Basic necessity to keep the forums running.

2) Because they are not uploaded to the server, so the server has no control over them.

3) I think you answered your own question, they have too many characters. A limit needs to be placed somewhere, and the current limit allows the vast majority of use cases for using images hosted on sites designed to allow you to upload and embed images.

Please don't colour the text of your posts red. Red is reserved for official moderator messages. Additionally, please don't colour the entirety of your posts a different colour. It can greatly affect readability, quotability, and moderatability of your posts, and if it becomes an issue may fall under the "excessive formatting" rule.

We will not be going into the details of how the forums run behind the scenes. Suffice it to say, most other forums aren't as large or busy as these are.

I'm trying to get a custom avatar.

As you can see, it's currently looking incredibly zoomed-in and blurry.

The problem is that this is not the avatar before I've tried resizing it so that it'll fit.

This is the avatar after I have resized it. The version that I'm currently using is 80 x 80; before that it was 117 x 117, which was slightly less-zoomed in and slightly less blurry, and before that it was 150 x 200.

Paradoxically, it was the 150 x 200 avatar that was the least zoomed-in and blurry - it didn't quite fit in the 'box', so to speak, but it was actually recognisable.

Can anyone explain what's going on and how I can fix it?

EDIT NOTE: I have tried using Gravatar links as well. Despite the fact my link differs only from a friend's in the email hash at the end (since obviously we have different emails), his works and mine doesn't.

EDIT 2: It's finally working, though for no explicable reason.

Apologies.

I currently have an avatar that may be a violation of the rules; my apologies if that is the case.

The primary reasons I haven't taken it down (to be safe) are two-fold: one, I'm currently kind of stupid and can't figure it out (and currently am out of time (I'm an hour and fifteen twenty minutes late getting my kids to bed); and two I'm not entirely certain it runs afoul of the rules... but only because I've never had a problem with it in the past (it definitely seems like it is, based off of a reading of the rules, which is why I'm asking).

I didn't create it - I was kind of surprised at the method the site required, but I found it easily enough by searching and linking it. The reason I'm uncertain is just that the image is so ubiquitous. I've used it in numerous other forums as my avatar. Again: I've no problem abiding by the rules. I have two children literally bouncing off of me and the walls (not literally for emphasis - literally for literal realsies) that need to go to bed - it makes typing and focus hard, and I can't find how to edit my avatar in my "profile" selection section.

If you'd like, just tell me how and I'd be glad to remove it, or feel free to do it yourself - I don't mind.

The image is taken from a 1995 video game created by someone else that I own no rights to. The link is someone else's website that I found by a Google search. That seems like it violates the rules.
(For the record, I didn't realize the rules were as exhaustive as they were; when I agreed that I'd read the rules, I really thought I'd done so, due to labeling of the subsection and the lack of any apparent link to the larger rules section (or at least, not one that I noticed at the time). Now that I actually have read the larger rules post, I'm attempting to make things right and actually abide by both spirit and letter - which is why I'm posting here and asking questions rather than trying to slip under the radar. I'm very sorry I made such a mess so quickly. Blech.)

The link* in the first post's second sentence ("It is suggested you read over the avatar and signature rules before you get started so that you don't run into any problems later.") doesn't actually go to avatar/signature rules. (emphasis added in case it's tl;dr)

I may have the same question as Dappershire, but I'm not sure since it seems kinda ambiguous.

The link* in the first post's second sentence ("It is suggested you read over the avatar and signature rules before you get started so that you don't run into any problems later.") doesn't actually go to avatar/signature rules. (At least for me, it doesn't.) It goes to a page that starts with "arimareiji, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:"

Thank you for your time.

* - My apologies, I had to strip all URLs from this post to create it. I underlined and blued the link for emphasis.
Edit: Rephrasing for clarity

Yes, the avatar rules were merged with the general rules (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/announcement.php?a=1) ages ago. You can find the avatar rules in the link I gave, and just scroll down to or search for "Avatar & Signature Rules". The "you do not have permission" error means the original post was moved to the mod-only area of the forums (which is how they "delete" old posts).

All the image links in the first post of this thread appear to be broken.

Also, I think the instructions are out of date due to some changes in how the forum is formatted. For example, there appears to be no "edit options" item in the "settings and options" list.

It's that Photobucket doesn't allow image linking on other sites unless you pay for their premium membership. So, unless you pay that, you'll need to look elsewhere for image hosting.

Thanks a lot! I decided to put it elsewhere, because I'm not going to pay just to be able to use my avatar.

There is a of of blank space under my avatar image, and it is not part of the image. Is this normal?

EDIT: I changed it for an image with more space on top for a temporary fix, but here is the original appearance for reference.

Yes. The avatar picture slot is a set size - it doesn't resize. If your avatar is smaller than the slot, there will be space under it.

Hmm, browser support for max-width and max-height is prevalent enough that I could probably change that now...

Blah... I seem to be a complete idiot... I've gone through all the steps to set my avatar (which worked perfectly fine before photobucket changed their polocies) and now that i'm using Imgur it keeps telling me I've entered the Url wrong. I've used the BBCode link, the Linked BBCode link and Direct Link but in all three situations all I get is a little dialogue box that says "You did not enter the correct format for the Custom Avatar URL field. Please read the field description for the expected format."

I've used the Linked BBCode link for my signature and as you can see, it works fine, so why can't I get my Avatar to work?

My first guess would be that there is some character in the URL that gitp is not liking. Can you post all three links so we can take a look at them?

Okay, so here we go

BBCode Link: https: //i.imgur.com/dY4CAaC.png (manually inputted space between the https: and the double backslash)

Linked BBCode: http: //i.imgur.com/dY4CAaC.png (https: //imgur.com/dY4CAaC) (once again, manually inputted space between the https: and double backslashes on both sets)

Direct Link: https: //imgur.com/dY4CAaC (Second verse same as the first)

Hope this helps in finding the problem.

Hmmm... The Linked BBCode is only showing half the code, it's missing the part of the code.

Try putting it without the s in https: i.e. use [url]http://i.imgur.com/dY4CAaC.png (https:...)

Don't put any tags, no square brackets. Just the URL.

I tried it, and had no issue with the avatar showing up.

It looks like you're linking to the web page, not to the image. If you're using Chrome, right click on the image and select "Copy Image Address", and use that, rather than the web page.

Will depend on what program you are using. There'll probably be a way to select a colour (such as the background) and the "delete it" so that it looks like a checkered board - that'll be transparent.

Paint, the default kind that comes with every Windows ever; mine is Windows 10. I had everything checked out for transparent background and such, but upon loading it into imgur, it proved to keep the "blank" background as white, despite using free-select and such. It proved to do the same in my image viewer, so I'm clearly doing something wrong.

In paint, you need to use the "transparent selection" option in the select drop down. I think this is a decent article (https://appuals.com/ms-paint-turn-white-background-transparent/) explaining how.

Please post the url you are attempting to use.

Also, please consider using punctuation. I am not having an easy time reading your post.

The instructions are a bit out of date. The forum no longer resizes the image, so there is no need to state the dimensions. If the image is too large, it will simply be cropped.

You can't use https for your avatar. From the instructions under the field:

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like we can simply drop the s in this case. Does image shack provide a different non-http link to the picture?

Are you using the direct link? Open the link, click on the image until the page stops changing and then right click on the image and pick something like "copy image address".

Many hosting sites prefer as the standard provide a link to a page where you can view the image or a picture-link combination, because their revenue comes from people visiting their site and seeing their ads. If you want to like just the picture, for instance as an avatar, you need the direct link. It's often the second or third option in the list of links you get after uploading.

The URL in your avatar includes the "..." that's displayed. So that's why it doesn't display.

The filename itself is "0aacacde-fcb3-4d2f-bb1d-e11155b5b90d.PNG". Do you have control over that, or does village.photos control the filename?
