View Full Version : Favourite Anime Opening?

Which anime opening do you like? While many I've seen are decent, some of the more impressionable ones includes Texhnolyze (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFlzz1POfTM) and Elfen Lied (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMS-QV2Rcv0). Both of the music, Guardian Angel and Lilium respectively, are very well fitting to the mood of their shows, incidently both are incredibly dark.

I have a thing for Air's Opening (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDTSvPyOuKw&feature=related), although that probably stems from my liking of the show. I do very much like the song Tori no Uta.

Now that I think about it, there's quite a few OPs I like, from the Rozen Maiden ones, Le Chevalier D'eon and Gankutsuou's.

Amusing ones include the Gundam parody of Genshiken 2 and the mesmerizing Lucky Star's.

I really like the opening (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1_X6BPJUm0) of Myself; Yourself, for the clock motifs and the Jantar Mantar sundials (which it seems nobody else in the world recognises.)

Enjoyable anime, for all its flaws.

There are a bunch, but being a Haruhiist, Bouken Desho Desho (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4EhwdPIijo&feature=related) wins hard. Code Geass's fourth opening (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSbWiYmmTvE&feature=related) is also pretty cool, as is Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann's first (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AgKSjUOrgQQ). Murder Princess's OP (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Irja2e0Z8lE) rocks pretty hard too.

Code Geass's first opening is insanely catchy, but I'll have to go with Elfen Lied's sheer beauty. Pity about the actual anime...

I'm actually partial to Black Jack's (Season 1?) opening, Gekkouka. It made me want to watch the show, which I think was okay as anime go.

Outlaw Stars is really catchy. I never cared for the opening to Gankutsou though the ending I personally think is one of the best. Blood+'s second opening is mesmerizing I almost wish they'd done the show in that same style it seemed to fit really well.

Not a big fan of Anime as a rule, but I try to watch all that I can stand. From what I remember, Elfen Lied had some evocative Latin themed music and artwork in their opening. The actual show, however, is ... juvenile. Can anyone say if the opening theme has any bearing on the spirit or memes of the actual show?

Death Note had some inspirational artwork in their original opening, but it was replaced by something a lot less tasteful half-way through the series. The original song, while a bit too whiney for my taste, had a nice refrain scattered throughout itself as far as vocals (making the song tolerable). I found the lyrics a bit retarded though ... something about the revolution of the fruit?

The second opening was terrible. Japan's attempt at screaming/metal was laughable at best.

It's not Japan's fault it sucked. 'Sides, it makes for some awesome parodies (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWRCSFLvxw0).

Also, Tengen Toppa Lyrical Nanoha (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WnNilOe4m7k). This is how you do the opening for a mechaless super robot series. :smalltongue:

I think Planetes' (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=oXePwwxHc_8) opening was one of the best openings I've ever seen. The song is good and the animation is decent. Then again, I love rocketry so I might be a tad biased.

Gundam 00's first (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VuwagwupX8) and second (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOpsNTIlK9Q) OP's are among my favorites, along with Ah! My Goddess's second season OP (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIEdapEwwCo) (it's the bagpipes). And finally, Gundam Wing's 2 OPs get a mention for the nostalgia factor: OP 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0JMnQMHF00I), OP 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3LxZClEEmPs).

Ones enjoyed:

Eva, the first OP for TTGL, Read or Die, Trigun, Elfen Lied, and "Rise", the OP for Ghost in the Shell SAC 2nd Gig. Azumanga Daioh and Lucky Star are pretty much impossible to dislike. "Fluffy temptation of wheat..." Ah, and a not-quite-qualifying mention for Gankutsuou's ED, as mentioned above. So good...

Favourite I think would be Cowboy Bebop.

My favorites are probably Cruel Angel Thesis and the utter nonsense that was the Azumanga opening. They complete, but cheerful wackiness of the Azumanga opening is just hilarious and cheers me up every time i hear it and Cruel Angel Thesis just set a really strong mood that prepared for the creepy mind screw that was the show.

Gorbash Kazdar

When it comes to OPs, for me, it's Cruel Angel Thesis (NGE), Tank! (Cowboy Bebop), Motekke! Sailor Fuku (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAB2ImSjUbI&feature=related) (Lucky Star, the OP that launched a thousand mashups/parodies, and a full dance number (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_RPZcSZWJo)), and Sorairo Days (TTGL) for ones already mentioned.

Three I don't see yet are Red Fraction (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Re8bIzbcu5w) (Black Lagoon), Battlecry (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LT2ZVN8b2Sw) (Samurai Champloo) and Asterisk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHWsQWjGYSA&feature=related) (Bleach). I don't actually care much for Bleach, but I found its first OP refreshing and unique for a shonen action series, both visually and musically. Of course, the later ones, though decent, are pretty standard fare. Battlecry and Red Fraction both always get me pumped up for their respective shows and to me fit perfectly with them. Especially amusing is that Battlecry has surprisingly good English, while Red Fraction is SUPAA ENGRISH.

I'll pass on endings for now since the OP only asked for OPs :smalltongue:

Bwhahaha, more people need to watch Baccano! anyhow.

Also, Bure Bure Bure Bure Bure

Here are some pretty damn good recent op's. Soul Eater (http://www.veoh.com/videos/v69605843h6FhgGA), excuse the quality of the veoh though.

Speed Grapher (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNM_WfOGAM0) gets credit for using a Duran Duran song that gets stuck in my head all the freaking time.

Macross Frontier (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=37E5XgHjc9M&feature=related), while having a quality op, this is more of a plug in for you all to watch the show. Hypno-Toad Demands it.

I have a soft spot for Tower of Druega (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAUipGEGr0Q)

Kara no Kyokai (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8SPcvMW-00&feature=related) While not an OP and more of a trailer, I'm looking forward to this.

Shakugan no Shana's first opening (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DrP0jyTgK24) - I don't know, I just liked it.

Rozen Maiden's Opening (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oyGRtbx6_uY) - It's got this... old-style feeling to it. Loved it.

xxxHOLiC's opening (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCmbf34Zhfk) - It fits so well.

Azumanga Daioh's opening (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huWKSYUX5Fs) - If any other animé in the world tried this, it would suck. Azumanga has the honor of pulling it off.

Higurashi no naku koro ni opening (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hHKmiRwyBU) - It's actually creepy, mysterious, paranoid. Good Music, good animation.

Higurashi no naku koro ni kai opening (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUBQ4aCqtwY) - Simply beautiful.

Originally had this as an edit above, but I'm slow and it was a lot for an edit, so I decided to move it to a new post.

One more, and some honorable mentions. The one I forgot was Days (http://youtube.com/watch?v=CvQyJKBfLro) (EurekA 7), which was my ring tone for a while (I have God Knows... from Haruhi now).

The 2nd (http://youtube.com/watch?v=ylQdyWzjs24&feature=related), 3rd (http://youtube.com/watch?v=ylQdyWzjs24&feature=related), and 4th (http://youtube.com/watch?v=ylQdyWzjs24&feature=related) EurekA 7 OPs are good as well, but not favorites of mine. Whatever you may think about EurekA 7 as a show, it has fantastic music all the way through.

Other honorable mentions include Cloud Age Symphony (http://youtube.com/watch?v=yuQaEfJnIa4) (Last Exile), Shine (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQdJaLlJq4c) (Seirei no Moribito), Obsession (http://youtube.com/watch?v=zrcL2yJ8rAU) (.hack//sign), and Stray (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71X4MwjKTV8) (Wolf's Rain) which come from four of my favorite shows, but aren't quite good enough to crack the top of my list. Extra points to the first three for ENGRISH; no bonus points to the last for good English because the singer is a native speaker. Musouka (http://youtube.com/watch?v=oQ3G4bpdUgE) (Underwaterrayromano Utawarerumono) has a similar fate to the above as well. I hear it's huge in Australia, though.

I want to like Mai-HiME's OP, Shining Days (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QC9EjXwp1k), more, but its much too jarring when juxtaposed to the latter portion of the series for me to really get into it.

I really like Alsatia (Mnemosyne) and Kokoro no Tsubasa (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFD-PVIbDyc) (Minami-ke), but both are quite new, and I'm not sure they've grabbed me the way the newer ones already near the top of my list have. As a note, Mnemosyne is very graphic, so I've declined to link the OP in its case.

Here are some pretty damn good recent op's. Soul Eater (http://www.veoh.com/videos/v69605843h6FhgGA), excuse the quality of the veoh though.

Can't say that OP grabbed me, but I d'awwed at some clips of Ranka with her slug phone, so I'm probably going to acquire at least the first few episodes ofr Macross Frontier. I wasn't going to bother with Soul Eater, but I've heard good things and that I really like the style of that OP, so I'll give it a shot too. I'm so far behind in my anime already though! :smallfrown:

I have a soft spot for Tower of Druega (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAUipGEGr0Q)
Embarrassed that I forgot to include this in my "awesome, but too new for me to judge accurately yet" group.

Higurashi no naku koro ni opening (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hHKmiRwyBU) - It's actually creepy, mysterious, paranoid. Good Music, good animation.

Higurashi no naku koro ni kai opening (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUBQ4aCqtwY) - Simply beautiful.

For some reason I tend to end up liking endings better than openings, but still, some good ones...

Well, first of all, Motteke! Serafuku (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VuxSuib5IwM), of course, for being insanely catchy, totaly nonsensical and generally cute.

Also, Bouken Desho Desho (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvZRAeIgO5o), while not as awesome as the ending from its same series, is still a really nice song.

Bokurano happens to have a great song as its opening - Uninstall (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05p646nlYS0) just sounds so... right.

I also want to second Hisoku no Sora (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1ivsAvImpE), the first opening of Shakugan no Shana.

The opening of the first season of Genshiken (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14ZefrEE6pU&feature=related) made me like it for some reason, too, even if I'm not really sure why :smalltongue:. And the "series within a series", Kujian, also had one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aTEbiDsLit4), and it wasn't that bad either

Love Tropicana (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dn-fl4txH2c) and its later variations, from Jungle Wa Itsumo Hale nochi Guu are cute and also insanely funny.

Lilium (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vi95vNNzyJY) is awesome as a song - a pity Elfen Lied didn't live up to its OP sequence.

And lastly, for nostalgia value, I'd have to mention that it's been about eight years since I watched Saber Marionnette and I can still sing both OPs from memory, so they can't be all that bad :smallwink:

I forgot Higurashi's as well. That said, I got too scared in the middle of the show, so I put it on hiatus for all these time. Naturally, it means that I haven't seen Kai.

For Shana openings, I like Hishoku no Sora as much as the second season's Joint.

I'm going to agree with you on this one. The last few episodes should have had amore dramatic opening, perhaps.

Also, in Shining Days, neither Akira nor Sister Yukariko are in the opening, and both are main important characters. That kinda sets me off a little.

While there have been many far superior ones posted, I've always held a soft spot for Naruto's Second OP. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ywEXIYICUww)

I'm quite pleased that Cartoon Network (barring one piece, obviously), generally uses the Japanese intros for many of their anime- everything on Adult Swim as near as I can tell, plus Naruto (I don't know if any of their other Toonami shows do it, but I don't watch them). Pokemon gets a bye because, well, I don't really think of it as anime per se, more just another cartoon.

Code Geass's 3rd op (1st season), Hitomi no Tsubasa by Access. (http://youtube.com/watch?v=RTAbWWfNFy0)

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex's Rise is also one of my favorites. (http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=aMif92wdzqE)

Well played, Hanzo, well played. That's basically the anime OP version of a rickroll :smalltongue:

I honestly hadn't realized that. And, actually, I kind of like that they did keep Shining Days as the OP for the whole series - the juxtaposition at the end is almost poignant. But, I do agree that it keeps me from enjoying it on its own merits quite as much as I probably would otherwise.

Tomorrow, when I am more coherent, I'll tackle some of my favorite EDs, I suppose.

Maybe I missed it, but I haven't seen any mention of Paranoia Agent (http://youtube.com/watch?v=rooJnHesxPQ) yet.

Also, I believe that some things never go out of style. For example, Tetsujin 28. The new (http://youtube.com/watch?v=J6nT9rI-mfw&feature=related), and the old (http://youtube.com/watch?v=LgES5QA0-rs&feature=related). Actually, the new one is probably better, because it has more GAO.

Remembered another opening i love. Inner Univer (http://youtube.com/watch?v=f9uX6nt4g78) the first season opening for GitS: Stand-Alone Complex. It is entirely screwy and in Russian, but i love it. And really how can you not love something composed by Yoko Kanno and sung in Russian?

Paranoia Agent seriously scares me. I haven't watched it just because I am scared of the OP/description. A kid with a bat beating the crap out of people is even more scarier than Rena Ryugu with a huge axe-sword thing.

I mean, this anime-dom famous picture is pretty scary:

http://www.sd40.btinternet.co.uk/wordpress/10/071009_03.jpg

:smalleek:

Also, I never noticed the lack of those 2 characters in Mai-Hime's OP either. Generally, I thought the show had too many characters.

The Winner. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXa_X9GEJH0&fmt=18)YouTube being jerks has prevented me from trumping you with something more oldschool and QUALITY, so I'll just have to copy another man's "trump card" and throw every Gundam OP ever made (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_9yF19G9Bg) at you.

The intended response was the first minute and a half of that, of course. Several of the others are kinda meh.

That video was misleadingly advertised. They missed the best one. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AIhSoWGgVbQ)

One more that I had totally forgotten about: Kibouhou (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UwrtJ2X38SE) (Spiral).

Also, more Gundam OPs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkfMgRtIccQ&NR=1). I was all set to say I'd not seen a Gundam OP I particularly cared for... but I really liked the one for 8th MS Team.

I should include both GitS OPs on my favorites list... for me, I count an OP (or an ED) as a favorite if it meets the following criteria. 1st, I'd listen to the song on its own, not just when I watch an episode of the show. 2nd, the animation with the OP is really well done or unique in some way. 3rd, it has to get me excited about watching/in the mood for the show it's for. And 4th, I have to either watch it every time I watch an episode of the series, or really have to think hard about whether I actually want to skip it.

I can't believe I forgot TTGL's Sorairo Days. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=suMG4uqahwk&feature=related) (That's an AMV of the whole song and might include spoilers.)

Gundam X's second OP, Resolution (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZI5hU2N4KiU), was also pretty good.

I thought it worked really well in the finale as well. TVTropes should have an article about that.

"When the series' opening theme begins playing in the final battle, you know the final boss is about to get owned."

Hmmm, another honorable mention: Asu no Egao no Tameni (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKc_W3dHdUk) from Gatekeepers. That was so catchy. (No link to video this time, I'm behind a firewall.) EDIT: Now with video!

Anyway, some more I thought of

DNAngel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKgNPqojzlM)

Cardcaptor Sakura Op1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I51LEtKF7nw&feature=related) and Op3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HbHa5tCHSs&feature=related) (And because this show is one of my weaknesses, 3rd closing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xuIuMJeAjN0&feature=related))

I don't think it was linked to, so R.O.D the OAV (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRjJK0Mzf5E) and TV (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fqmq-WiSKI0&feature=related) (Slightly NSFW)

Again, don't think is was actually linked to, Outlaw Star (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0N3L-pcGdc)

Also, Full Metal Panic (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBXWeaMgh2E) is nice (Again, slightly NSFW), and Fumoffu (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qy_oppK6DAo&feature=related) is pretty.

all I can think of right now.

Edit: Black Cat (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wt1FuMWVjs), I forgot black cat.

Though I don't like it and in fact find it grating as hell, I appreciate both openings for Death Note. Largely because they give my elderly mother nervous fits on the rare occasion she catches them when channel surfing.

Personally most any opening I liked are pretty much listed here, so I'm not sure I need to list specifics as well as discovering some new favorites here. I really like that one for Paradise Kiss (even if I just heard of that show here). Some good ones...

Gurren Lagann (Something about this song somehow does make you feel like you can surpass anything and make logic your bitch)

Black Lagoon (Gratuitious Engrish to teh max)

Death Note 2nd Opening (I see it as a sign of Light's descent into madness and essentially the show's way of saying that everything's going to the crapper)

Both Higurashi themes (The first one is creepy and sets up the show's feel of girls gone wild in the worst way possible while the other sets up the second season's eventual lead towards the redemption/stopping of the chaos)

First Bleach opening (It was a catchy tune)

Soul Eater (The song itself I'm not a fan of, but the opening sequence was actually pretty cool)

Aaand... That's pretty good for now.

Can't we change this thread into general favourite opening/closing thread? please?

or at least favourite anime opening/closing thread. Because there's a lot of anime closing that's way cooler than the opening.

And while I'm at it...

The original macross. The best classic mech show opening.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=2VlD7VRZcA4

And a really amusing one.

Desert Punk 1st opening
http://youtube.com/watch?v=vqX-EXdGf_Y

By the way, that anime got a perfect example of cerebus syndrome. As you can see by its 2nd opening song

http://youtube.com/watch?v=vWzESpqrFJk

Sigh, if only they cut down those so called fanservices... If they did that, i'd be a truly amazing mad max in anime style. The last quarter of it is truly amazing.
