View Full Version : I feel stupid saying this but, I need another build.

Hey, look at me! I'm asking for another build! This time I need the perfect combination between a melee combatant and an offensive dedicated spell caster! But where could I find it? Oh yeah, right here in the forums. Extra points if the build includes two weapon fighting with bastard swords and is able to cast the "orb of X" spells. And extra extra points if the poster also adds the fluff for the multiclassed character.

That's a funny approach.

If you can do damage in melee, you don't need to do damage with spells--your spells are for buffing/debuffing/controlling.

And TWF with bastard swords? That's inherently sucktastic, and being a gish robs you of the few ways to redeem it.

Not to mention that dual-wielding bastard swords is like wearing a neon sign that says "my genitalia are of insufficient size".

1) Define "offensive dedicated spellcaster." Do you want them blasting, using buffs to turn into a powerhouse, or what?

2) Do you want optimized for a Gish, optimized for a Gish with two bastard swords, or just to be a Gish with two bastard swords?

3) Do you prefer Sorcerer or Wizard? Is there some other class you'd like more?
What about Warlocks?

4) Thoughts on Tome of Battle? Is it allowed, and do you want it?

5) How much fluff do you want?

I know most of the idea sucks, but if try to develop it is going to be worse, OK, forget the two weapon fighting (Actually, powerfull build, monkey grip and a huge great sword is the biggest neon sign with "Hi, im over copmensating" message)

Now, the idea is for a character that uses spells to damage foeas at distance but is from a world in wich magic is not well seen. That's why he must develop his melee abilities. Not everything is necessary from what I've said, just throw the best gish you can and I'll see what I think.

I dont have ToB, a friend has it though so yes, if you like you can use it. Actually, use any book you like, by offensive I mean blasting and yes, i like warlocks.

Character level?

no level in particualr, just the build.

I don't know if you have PH2, but the Duskblade seems to fit what you want. I'd suggest something using Jade Phoenix Mage, but given that you don't have ToB that's out.

Throw any build you like, as I told you, I have a friend with all the books.

Any standard gish build can perform all those you mentioned, I believe.
So I wonder: what's wrong with the standard builds?

OK, then tell me a standard build and I'll see if it suits me. Great avatar by the way.

How about Fighter 1/Focused Transmuter (CM) 5/Eldritch Knight 1/Spellsword (CW) 1/Abjurant Champion (CM) 5/Eldritch Knight 7, dropping Enchantment, Necromancy and Evocation? That tends to be the default gish build. I find it a bit squishy, but if you're using attack spells for a good part of your offense, it should work.

If you want to keep the Bastard Sword idea, Raumathari Battlemage (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/iw/20030413c) from Unapproachable East is an interesting option. Replacing four levels Eldritch Knight with Battlemage is worth considering (if you have EWP anyway, you'll meet the crunch prerequisites without much effort). It would mean dropping "Focused Specialist" to keep Evocation (this might be justifiable with Moonbow, Wall of Force, Contingency and the like).

The Combat Wizard (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/variantCharacterClasses.htm#wizard) variant from Unearthed Arcana can be nice. So can Complete Champion's Domain Ability variant thing.

Standard Gish Feats:

Combat Casting--because five levels of Abjurant Champion are required.
Arcane Strike (CW)--helps synergize spellcasting with melee combat. A good damage source, too.
Quicken Spell/Power Attack--because the first is required for spellcasters and the second is required for melee combatants and you fall into both categories.
Extend Spell/Persistant Spell (CAr)--because you rely on buffs. Longer durations means more spells available, which means more spells at a time, which means a holistically stronger character.
Combat Reflexes/Robilar's Gambit (PHB2)--the first is required for tanks, the second is a brilliant choice because your defenses are minimally connected to your AC. And with Abjurant Champion, you can afford to drop your armor class a bit.
Practiced Spellcaster (CAr)--cast spells better. Pretty simple.
Improved Initiative/Improved Toughness (CW)--strong choices if you just don't know what else to pick.
Combat Expertise/Improved Trip; Leap Attack (CAd); Improved Bull Rush/Shock Trooper (CW); Improved Sunder/Combat Brute (CW)--all strong melee feats
Improved Familiar--Imps that share your BAB and self-buffs can definitely be worth it. In high-powered campaigns, Draconic Polymorph combines very nicely with the Outsider type. The five-foot limitation on shared spells can be an issue, though.
