“Never for a moment.” Azurous replies with a grin. Taking his crossbow in hand and still looking for Trahone, Azurous returns to the deck, he and Scrya look to the other ship trying to see what they are up against. “If they want to take the ship why are they throwing rocks at us?” he says to no one in particular.

Azurous takes a moment to consider there position, 100ft till any of us but Atan are even halfway effective, he smiles remembering watching the talented elf practice, and some of us will need to be even closer. An idea strikes and he calls to the others “A volley of magic missiles when they get within 100ft might make them think twice, especially if we make them think all the shots came from the same person.”

Minya dashed back on deck, bow in hand and sword belted over her explorer's outfit. Cerpe fluttered overhead, squawking importantly. <"Excellent shot, brother!">, Minya cheered in elvish, and then continued in Draconic, <"Go up to your nest now, Cerpe, and keep an eye on things. Tell me if you see anything I should know about.">

"That's a brilliant idea, Lirt! If your web doesn't work I can try to burn their rope thingies with my Scorching Ray." Minya stood next to Atan and readied her bow. Suddenly getting a thought, she reached into her pouch and took out a sheet of parchment, ink, and pen. Quickly slicing off a strip of the parchment, she wrote, "That's what you get for attacking a ship full of wizards!" Smiling, she showed it to Atan, and added, "Do you want to send them a message?"

Minya watched Atan's attempts to fire the attacker's sails and thought. Obviously, one scrap of an oily rag wasn't sufficient. On the other hand, too much weight would make it impossible to reach. She dug in Atan's pack and grabbed his candles, and then picked up a scrap of twine or string.

Working quickly, Minya waxed the string to use as a fuse, laid it against an arrow, took some of the rags, and began to carefully wrap the shaft of what she hoped would be a flying flaming torch. Next, she rubbed more wax along outside of her "torch-arrow"; not concerned with perfection, she just wanted to have enough wax to keep the flame burning. Finally, she soaked the wax-encrusted rag wrapped arrow with some of her lamp oil and handed it to Atan while she lit the other candle. Getting set beside him, she said, "Let me know when to light it." At Atan's nod, she set the arrow aflame, waited a second to confirm it was lit, and said, "It's ready!"

The sudden splash awakes Trahone from his slumber. I can not believe I have slept so long. He rises and rubs his eyes to look out the porthole. Atan frowned as his first shot plunged through the enemy's sail without so much as a scorch mark. He carefully lined up his second shot, and was similarly disappointed. Sighing, he lined up the third shot only to have an unexpected heave of the deck make him misfire and drop the arrow on their own ship. Fortunately, one of the sailors quickly doused the flames. Regaining his composure, he lined up the last two shots flawlessly, but like the first two, they failed to catch.

The other ship closes fast, covering about a fifth of the space between the ships in one minute. The sailors at the ballista let fly, lodging an arrow in the bow of the other ship. Their pleasantries are returned with another stone flying over your heads to land in the water on the other side of the ship. The captain alters course to throw off the pursuer. "Get some of these rags to the ballista", the captain yells to his officer, "hit them with what we've got before their catapult ruins my ship."

As flames spread from where his arrow hit, Atan laughed and cheered.
"Sister, you're a genius!" he cried, throwing an arm around her. He knew the flames wouldn't last. If the pirate crew was even half as competent as their own, some means of extinguishing the fire in their rigging would be exercised in short order. But the damage had been done. At least one pirate crew knew not to cross this particular ship again.
Bouncing back up to the captain, he had an even bigger grin on his face than before. "Sir, I'd like to report the enemy ship has developed a bit of a fire problem," he said. "I hope the Navy appreciates the help," he added.

The arrow impacts the aft sail, splattering burning wax over it. You can see several figures climbing through the ships rigging while the flames eat their way through the cloth. When the crewman finally manage to put out the fire, a large section of the sail is burnt, and the ship trails a thick cloud of black smoke.

The captain walks over to Atan and pats him on the shoulder. "Well done, son. You seem to have some talent with the bow. Are you sure you want to spent your life hunched over books? No offense", he apologizes to your friends.

A quarter of an hour passes until you hear a "navy ship ahead" from the crow's nest. A few minutes later you can discern the shape of several sails, the largest one bearing prominently the emblem of the royal navy. The warship heads towards you, then matches the speed and course of the smaller cog, and a soldier yells "Did you fire the signal?" "Aye", the captain replies. "We're coming aboard."

The warship slowly lowers a drawbridge-like ramp to the cog, taking care not to damage the ship with the iron spikes that protrude from it. An officer of the purple dragons accompanied by four soldiers steps aboard and greets you. "What caused you to fire the signal?" The captain shortly relays the recent events, including Atan's considerable help in driving off the pirates. The dragon congratulates you. "Well done, Atan. We could use men like you in the dragons. What do you think?"

"If you do, I hope we meet again." The dragon looks at Emmis' Illusion, then bids you farewell and goes off to chase after the pirates. The ship stays where it is, anchoring for the night.

The next day you continue your journey, arriving at the mouth of the Wyvernflow at the end of the day. You travel up the Wyvernflow, making a short stop at the town of Wheloon to allow for some trade. Three uneventful days later you reach Hultail, the small village that is home to the largest shipyards on the Wyvernwater, as the crew readily explains to you. After you leave Hultail, the wind changes, and you have to spend two nights on the boat.

On the third day, finally, a few huts on the shore come into sight. The ship is anchored close to shore, and yawls are loaded with various wares and set into water. You accompany the merchants on the first boat, and arrive at the , where a small crowd has already gathered. The merchants jump onto the rocky beach. "We bring you everything you desire! Fine threads from Suzail!, " He looks at a child hiding behind his mother. "Do you want some honey?" The childs nods, and as the merchant dips a wooden stick into a honey bowl and gives it to the kid, his eyes go almost as wide as his mouth as he tries to swallow the stick whole, but not without distributing honey liberally over his face.

I'd take the healing potion if no one else wants it, but the wand is useless to me - the school of universal magic had some basic armor training, and the divine incantations I've been learning don't require complex gestures." He gestures to his breastplate.

Azurous was use to being at the back of a group like this. As he had always been the least powerful when travelling with his family so had always stayed at the back with his younger sibling. Later he acted as a guide to Haleh and Tyrygosa, making sure they knew what was happening and why, but they where still there to guard him.

Now that he was among equals (more or less) he adopted the rear position to better protect the others, knowing from experience that it was at once one of the strongest and most venerable positions. He had his weapon ready and both he and Scrya where keeping a close watch on there surroundings, great though his faith in Atan’s woodsman ship and Trahone’s destructive power he knew what dangers generally lurked in forests, and what was reputed to lurk in this forest specifically, and was rather uncertain of the party’s ability to deal with the threats they may encounter.

As they had entered the forest proper Azurous had observed Atan move ahead and then seem to gradually disappear from view. Meanwhile the rest of the party had formed into a rough order. Azurous was unsurprised to see that Trahone had placed him self between himself and Liam, who was in the centre of the group, so as to be close to both. It had always seemed strange that the most formidable of the three of them, and probably the whole group, was so timid. That being said he was very determined and would stand up to anyone in defence of his friends.

(OOC - Well I was board so I decided to do some RP-ing (if that’s the correct wording) and add some background. Hope it’s ok for me to say where Trahone would be, keeping in mind what TKDfirefly said about the character I think this is where he should go.)

You march off into the forest, following Atan on a well-trodden path. The high sun filters through the canopy above you, and all around you, birds sing their usual songs. Some woodpeckers hammer away off in the distance, and once or twice something rustles in the thick undergrowth nearby, but you cannot make out the source.

The air is fresh, and the trees shelter you from the direct sun, so you don't feel tired at all when you arrive at a clearing with a stone circle in the middle only a little more than a quarter of an hour later. The circle is about 40 foot in diameter, and in a very bad condition. Only in a few places more than two stones stand atop each other, and the inside of it looks mostly black. A few lonely stones are scattered around the clearing.

For Atan and Azurous only:

It looks as if a tower stood on this site a few years ago. Now that you get closer, you can see that a few stones mark where walls once may have stood. A good portion of the floor inside the tower has collapsed into some sort of basement about 20 feet below. On the floor of the basement you can see scattered heaps of scorched rubble and a few burnt wooden beams. The ground area of the tower contains only the scorched remains of the stone structure.

You fall into the same marching order you have agreed on earlier that day, and trot off, following Atan's unerring lead. With the mules taking all the heavy load, the march is more like a weekend hike to you. The undergrowth is only a minor nuisance to you, and you try to avoid the brushier patches without making too long a detour. You try hard, but keeping up your guard for hours at a time proves difficult. Hours pass uneventfully, and the sun is setting in the West, as it is supposed to.

Seeing the camp begin to take shape for the evening, and realizing he would have little to add to the tent-raising and dinner-cooking efforts, Epsun cast about for something else he could add. Seeing Atan headed out of the camp to hunt for dinner, he hurried after him. "Atan! I don't know my way around a hunt like you do, but I'm not bad with a crossbow, and I know a decent bit about what's edible, easy to find, that sort of thing. Mind if I help?"

If he's allowed to come, Espun will let Atan do the searching for prey while he keeps more of an eye out for edible plants, berries, and anything else that might better suit elven or vegetarian members of the party. When Atan finds something promising, Epsun will let him take the lead, backing him up with the second shot or pair of eyes where necessary. Not wanting to tread on Atan's toes in his area of expertise, he'll let Atan run the show, lending support where he can.

As the group begins to set up camp Azurous considers his food supply, he sees Atan leave to go hunting, Epsun in tow. Well we seem to have some time on our hands. Come on Scrya, time to catch supper.

Leaving most of his gear in the relative safety of the camp and taking only his weapons Azurous sets off in the opposite direction to Atan. No point competing for game.

Atan moves through the forest like a trained woodsman, stopping here and there to pick up some edible plants. Even if his hunt would be unlucky, he still would have enough food to survive. He looks for some animal tracks, and is lucky, only to lose them again after some time. Another pair of tracks leads to a small waterhole, and he sets up camp there for some time, hoping to catch a thirsty deer. He waits in vain, maybe it is already too dark for most of the animals to be active. After a while he gives up, making his way back to the camp in order to arrive in time for his watch duty. He has collected enough plants, leaves, weeds and berries for Minya and him to even have a nice breakfast.

Azurous first moves deeper into the forest to get away from the noisy camp, then starts looking for tracks and other hints of animals in the area. Despite the sun already setting behind the treetops, he is lucky, stumbling across a patch of wild berries while he is looking for tracks. He pads his belt pouch with leaves, and plucks as many as he can, storing them in his pouch and in a fold of his shirt that he holds up. He can still drop them if something better shows up. Just as he finishes plucking berries, he hears something rustle nearby, and spots a rabbit sitting only about two dozen feet away. He reaches for his crossbow and loads, and the rabbit innocently starts hopping away. Azurous sneaks after him, and when the rabbit stops again, he is ready. The rabbit drops dead immediately. Happy, Azurous walks over to the body and removes the bolt. Grabbing the rabbit by the ears, he makes his way home, backtracking the way he came.
Even sneaking carefully after the rabbit, the hunt had taken less than half an hour from the patch of berries, but after more half an hour of walking back, he has not reached it yet. Under the darkening sky, the forest looks so so different, and after some more searching, it dawns on him that he is not going to find the way back to the camp anytime soon.

Back at the camp, Emmis wonders why Azurous is not back in time for his watch. Trahone volunteers to assist him. "Azurous does not have a reliable means of measuring time, so we can't expect him to be punctual. I can take over the first hour of his shift. If he still is not here by then, we should start to worry".

I was holding off on posting to let someone else speak up :cough: :cough: so this didn't become the WonderTwins Power Game :smalltongue:

Minya sighed with relief when Atan returned. She wasn't worried, not really, but the incipient panic in Trahone and Emmis' demeanors was contagious. All her life People had been wandering off into the woods for an hour or a day or a week or whatever, so Azurous' absence hadn't bothered her. Other than his failing to do his chore of standing watch, but that happened too. Watch standing was boring, after all.

Very, very boring. Minya sighed with disappointment when she realized she would probably have to take Atan's watch, while he looked for the missing Azurous. Whatever else happened, however, the base camp had to be defended. The mules were here, and the gear was here.

"Does anyone have any means of generating a signal light for a long time? Something Azurous could use to home in on, despite the thickness of the woods? I have nothing other than cantrips and short spells." She looked hopefully around and then began to collect a large supply of wood; perhaps a bonfire would help. Of course, setting fire to the woods wouldn't help, so the fire needed to be carefully placed to avoid overhanging tree branches or underground root complexes. Minya might not be the forester Atan was, but she was enough of an elf to understand that.

While she pulled wood from the forest, she stayed close enough to see the small camp fire. Cerpe perched morosely on a nearby branch, fluttering about after her and grumbling.

<in Draconic>"This is no time to be awake, Minya. I should be sleeping. It's not easy to look this good, you know. Besides, if Scrya can't get his mage out of the woods, why is it my problem?"
"Stop whining and stay alert, Cerpe. I'm not in the mood."

While most of Minya's missiles whizzed past or bounced off of intervening branches, one found the target. "Ahah!" she cried theatrically while she distentangled herself from her hammock. "Woe be unto he who disturbs a sleeping elf!" The effect was unfortunately marred by a fit of giggles.

You pack up camp and fall into the same marching order as the day before, with Atan scounting ahead. The sun is already high in the sky, but the forest gives you enough shadow that you can march easily without exhausing yourself too much. You follow the river until the sun sets again, making only a short rest to eat something in the early afternoon.

When the sun touches the horizon, you stop and set up camp as the day before.

Thankfully doffing his heavy armor, Espun sighs. So, how long do we plan on searching before changing our tactics?

Liam shrugs as he sets up his bedroll, "Well, we have only been looking for two days... reason says it may take a few more. I'm sure we will start changing our tacticts soon if these don't pan out. If the local lizards prefer swampy areas to riverbanks, then following the river is still our best bet of finding marshy conditions."

"Do we want to send out a group without the mules to look for the lizards? Maybe we've been scaring them off?" asked Minya, as she started peeling potatoes for the stew.

"Well, sister dear, that might be the case, but we haven't seen any marshland yet, so I don't think so. If we were creeping through reeds for two days and hadn't seen any, I'd agree," Atan said.

The gnome settles with a grunt of satisfaction on his laid-out bedroll and begins rearranging his pack so it'll sit better tomorrow. Makes sense to me - that map show at all how far we should expect to go before finding a swamp?

Liam frowns, "They like swamps, and riverbanks... lets follow the river for at least a day more before we try setting a permanant camp. Perhaps we'll find lizard sign along the way... everyone keep an eye on the banks for tracks and such."

"So, we will keep moving through the woods by day, looking for signs of lizard nests, until we reach the swamp. Then, we set up a base camp and go on excursions? Are we agreed?"

If the others agreed, the group set up camp for the night, fulfilled their watch schedule rotations, and moved to a new site the next day, doing this every day until the terrain changed to a more swampy, lizard likely region.

Nods vigorously. Not that camping isn't romantic and all, but I'm in no great hurry to spend longer out here than we need to.

Agreed. Fast forward as necessary.

Two days pass uneventfully, as you make your way through the forest. There is no trail that you can follow, and the undergrowth seems to get thicker, making your progress more tiresome. The canopy also allows less light to pass, making even the brightest days look like an eternal dusk. When you camp at night, you hear twigs cracking around the camp, but no source can be found when you go to check. At the end of the third day, the ground gets softer and muddier, and you turn back a little to set up camp on firm ground. Reddish light filters through the leaves above you when you finish putting up your tents.

Atan (http://www.thetangledweb.net/forums/profiler/view_char.php?cid=12370)

Once camp was set up, Atan headed out for his usual evening hunt. He was perhaps a bit more cautious than usual, given the marshy turn in the terrain. He kept an arrow nocked as he wandered under the trees, senses open to the likelihood of things that didn't recognize him as top of the food chain.

Liam looks around the camp, "I agree... sooner back is better. We just need to decide how we're sending out parties to look for the lizards and who's staying to guard the camp."

The gnome nods assent as he looks around the campsite. If there are lizards nearby, this shouldn't be too bad a place to stay for a day or two while we search. I'd be happy to team up with anyone - we covered shocker lizards in Fauna Arcana, so I'm sure I'll remember a useful thing or two if we have to fight them.

"We shouldn't split up too much," Nuale says, sitting leaning against a tree, her spear leaning against it next to her. The last two days, she's been glad she chose to bring a weapon that doubled as a walking-stick. "It might be dangerous to get lost in swampland."

Glancing at the low sun, Epsun adds Well, I'm easy either way, much like Liam, but we shouldn't all be so agreeable, or we'll not get anything managed before nightfall. For the sake of reaching a consensus, how does a hunting party of Minya, Atan, and Azurous sound? The rest of us can stay in camp. The gnome seems much less interested in being agreed with as he does in a consensus being reached.
