I was looking through the SRD for a draconic mount for a paladin, and I noticed the wyvern. (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/wyvern.htm) How would I modify the Paladin's Special Mount bonuses/the mount's base stats to make them decently acceptable to a DM and the rest of the party?

SRD and other OGL only, please.

The DMG describes a list of alternate monsters suitable for bieng paladin mounts. Though the wyvern is not one of them, we can easily assume that the minimum level for a paladin to gain one is 9, since the DMG recommends that flyings mounts be three challenge ratings lower than the paladin.

That's it? No stat modifications? Or do I treat the Wyvern-riding Paladin as those 3 levels lower for determining his mount's bonuses?

Part of the reason I'm looking for a draconic mount is that I've always been a fan of heroes riding massive scaly beasts into battle, like Haar and other Dragon Riders from Fire Emblem:

You treat the paladin as having started his special mount progression from level 9. So, from level 9-11, its as if your paladin level was 5-7 for the purposes of the special mount's stat mods and special abilities.

Haar is awesome.

What if I wanted him to have it earlier? Would I just drop the HD until it reaches the CR I want?

Also, do Special mounts still gain feats as their HD increase by the Paladin's ability?

I've always wanted to fiddle with a Pally, but I've never really had a game group to do it with before now...

Dropping HD (with consent of the DM of course) is a decent idea, since it would represent a younger wyvern, more likely to have been seduced by the paladin's divinity. Be careful not to make it a medium creature or to take away to much of it's strenght score because it won't function as a mount then!

Just be sure that your character is constantly napping.

And maybe the wyvern has narcolepsy, for good measure.

I don't get it...

Wyverns are my second favourite mount. If you want to put down the hit die, that should weaken the wyvern enough to allow you to take it at a lower level, I would say around one level per hit die.

Haar's (The character shown above) most recognizable trait is his constant sleeping. The joke is that Mando should make a character just like him. Simple, isn't it?
