I've had some discussions with a number of people.

It occurred to me that one thing which computer games are missing are illusions.

It would add another layer I think, if you couldn't necessarily trust your perceptions. That enemy that suddenly comes from around the corner and starts blasting you might well be an ally.

You might not even be aiming where you think you are, and could shoot yourself.

There could be battles between illusionists where they are lashing out, not even able to hit each other. Each trying various tricks, attempting to outwit the other (Such as making ones health bar start randomly showing different numbers. Or a team mate telling you that your enemy is over on that hill over there)

It'd be tricky to program something like this. It's not just that you have to give people the power to make things appear to be there that aren't, but also an interface.

I think there's some real potential for fun here.

I dunno - in Portal, you certainly couldn't trust anything GLaDOS, your sole

Not quite.

source of information was completely untrustworthy, and screwed with your head.

That said, it was very fun.

Yes well, lies are a bit different a thing :P

This would be more like if every now and again your portal stopped working.

Which it wouldn't, because the portals are safe! (The device however...)

It works on a certain level in multiplayer, at least. Team Fortress 2's spy class, for example, or the assassin class in Dark Messiah.
