I have the urge to play a game based on some kind of mecha... any good (preferably free) ones out there that you've found?

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I'd like it to be for PC or (if not free) one of the more recent Nintendo systems. (DS and Wii preferred, GC and GBA acceptable)

Titans of Steel (http://www.dosgamesarchive.com/download/game/197)
Megamek (http://sourceforge.net/projects/megamek)

If you mean a more shooterish game, I am stuck.

There's a lot of Mechwarrior games on the PC - although I haven't played any of them so I cannot recommend any.

For GBA, there's Super Robot Wars Original Generation 1 & 2 - they are truly delicious strategy games.

Metal Fatigue. Giant robots pounding other robots and other military vehicles. Oops, my sword arm's been damaged. Discard it and replace it with an awesome laser arm from the enemy I just trounced!

Not sure about the latest installments, but generally the MechWarrior series is truly good indeed.

I also second RandomLunatic's recommendation of MegaMek (and it's available for free, too, so you can try it out without effort), though I imagine it could be slightly difficult to understand, unless you are already familiar with the rules of the Classic BattleTech tabletop wargame.

Thanks for the suggestions, I actually wanted more of a shooter-type mecha game rather than strategy-type game...

Well, the MechWarrior games are pure shooters. (MegaMek is not)

Bootfighter Windom XP SP-2. (http://mirrormoon.org/projects/windom) There's a summary and a video on-site - the closest thing I can think of to it are the Gundam arcade games and Virtual-On.

Metal Fatigue.

That game is singlehandedly the clunkiest RTS I have ever had the chance to play, and somehow this is offset by the sheer amount of unique ideas it presents. It's good, but it's also very, very bad in critical ways.
