Anyway, this thread is where you can critique the backstory and modus operandi of one of my 4E all-lycanthrope (the PCs, not the bad guys) campaign villains, the voodoo-slinging pirate-mage, Jacob Bok. Basically he's a loyal servant of the campaign's main BBEG, Erebin Pullusia, and like him, is more of an antihero than a truly evil creature-although like his boss, he isn't afraid to get his hands dirty in order to establish his particular brand of utopia.

Please note that I'm making up his backstory as I go along: Although I have it down pat in my head, I haven't put it in words yet.

Jacob Whateley Bok the Sea-Warlock.

Class: Sorcerer, though he has a few levels of Rouge as well-Can't have a pirate without rouge levels.

Appearance: A mulatto (black man with Caucasian genes in his blood), Jacob Bok is who you would call able to "pass for white" originally, but his cavorting with dark powers (he's a Ravenloftian native, ha ha) has made him part fey, so his mixed heritage has given him an unnatural bronze sheen. As for the face, his is mostly unremarkable, what with the small nose and round eyes, except for the eyes themselves, which are violet. And not just a normal shade of violet either, but a pure, seemingly amethyst hue. Like most of Jacob's body, this is a result of supernatural influence-a result of his family's "curse".

Story: Jacob's story actually begins a few generations before his birth, in the Ravenloft domain of Sourgane, with a woman named Julie. A servant to the rich Whateley plantation, her master and her grew smitten with each other, but were kept from marriage by social class and Sourgane's inherent racism. Not to be deterred by this, Julie petitioned the loa spirits of her religion to help her, wishing for them to give her "power beyond mere class and race". The loa heard her, mixing their blood with hers and giving her arcane magic in the process. Seeing this obvious blessing of their gods, the voodun priests reluctantly agreed to wed Julie and her master, who went on to live happily together by all accounts. But like many things in the Land of Mists, this power came at a cost: As Julie and Whateley had grown addicted to the taste of each others affections, so too would their descendants grow addicted to the power that enabled their union-the loa's gift of arcane magic.

And so, the Whateley's tragedy was born, before it's result was even conceived...

Time passed. Although the Whateley family was never truly poor, they lost much of their estate and wealth to their thirst for occult knowledge. This also had a detrimental effect on the families themselves-when Jacob himself was born, his parents were so obsessed with the lore of arcana that they neglected him, leaving his raising to a string of nannies who were more inclined to their pay then to caring for the yong sorcerer and his sister. As a result, Jacob withdrew into himself, focusing on his studies of academia and magic then finding actual friends among his swampy home. In his spare time, he would read the long-negleted collection of his parents books, and it was their that he became enthralled by the tales of pirates and naval adventurers. To his young mind, these were men that were their own masters, in need of no one, in search of no one. Needless to say, he joined a naval academy of Paridon after coming of age, finding the old city and it's costantlly spinning plots and endless secrets to his liking. He became known as a cunning and deadly privateer, a getleman pirate of trade routes who stole for his chosen nation, and it's hunger for resourses. He came back to Sourgane a weathy and famous man, expecting a hearty welcome from his family, having been restored to prominence by their son.

Instead, he found only betrayal, and with it, the bodies of his loved ones...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jacob returned to the site of his family's manor, but to his horror, he found an ashen ruin. Desperate for answers, he grabbed the nearest townsfolk an demanded to know why his estate burned down. Terrified, the man gave the whole story: During Jacob's absence, the family had grown even more obsessed with the occult lore of Sourgane, and had levied an expensive tax on the workers of their plantation to pay for it. Already burning with anger over having to work for a group of mulatto witches, this was the last straw for the town, who rose up against them, burning down the manor. But they did not stop there: they then turned on the family itself, killing both Jacob's parents, their remaining servants, and (Jacob killed him at this point), the beloved younger sister of the voodun. In a fit of rage, Jacob turned to the forbidden secrets of necromancy, and, using the fiery undead of his family, annihilated the town, then used the fear of the remaining villagers to create an army of fiyhrs, who killed them. After this dark deed was done, Jacob swore to himself that he would never have to rely on anyone ever again, and so be torn apart by their deaths.

And so, taking a new name from the Sourgane word for dark magic, Jacob Bok was born from the ashes of his former home.

Years passed. Tales of a ghostly pirate ship captained by a warlock with a look of loneliness in his violet eyes and crewed by hell spawned monsters spread across the waves of the Sea of Sorrows, and it's inhabitants trembled with fear. The dark powers noticed this, and they made Bok's wild personality and amoral fascination with lore more physical, transforming him partially into a dark fey known as a bogeyman, with the ability to draw on myths about his powers to feed his actual ones. Despite the measure of vindication he felt with the addition of his new power, Jacob felt a pining for love of for who he was, regardless of his ancestry or fey nature. Not a dependent love, mind you-just an accepting kind. More than that, he needed a purpose, a goal to attain.

Then, he found Edena Pullusia, and with it, a new mission...

During one of his routine sweeps of the Sea of Sorrows, looking for ships carrying arcana to plunder, he came across one that even he, having found more odd magically-enhanced vessels in his years than most Ravenloft natives find in a lifetime, found strange. It's bow was covered in strange runes that even Sithican and Darkonese ones did not have any similarity to. It's mast was painted with images of the night sky and topped with a carving of the full moon. More than that, it was a steam ship-As a rule, Bok had found that wizards of any kind did not generally outfit their ships with industrial technology. Curious as to the identity of the captain and his strange fascination with Zhestria (making that assumption on the fact that Paridon was the only industrial domain he knew of), he set a course for it, expecting an easy victory-After all, were not Paridoners rather skeptical of ghost ships? Instead, he found that not only were the crew of the opposing vessel were not only prepared for them, they themselves were supernatural creatures-Both seaborne lycanthropes and Elemental Archons. Fighting his way through the monstrous crew, he stormed into the captain's quarters-and found the naval officer was not only a wizard, but a werewolf! Caught off guard long enough for the beast to make it's move, his rapier was knocked clean out of his hand by a claw.

Victorious, Edena returned to her normal form-Where Jacob was surprised to see that not only was she a woman, but a beautiful one at that! With one hand ready to make an arcane gesture, she angrily demanded to know what was Bok doing here, and who had paid him to attack a Moonlord vessel. Recognizing the name from rumors he had heard, Jacob quickly answered that no, he did not have any vendetta against the secret order, or any lycanthrope for that matter-he was just a humble pirate. Slowly, Edena lowered her hand-he had no reason to lie, and besides, she had heard of him-specifically, the fact that he knew no master, living or dead. She let him go, on one condition-That he remember how the daughter of the Moonlords' leader spared his life, and he would repay them in return, by serving her father, and his cause. Jacob agreed.

Bok soon proved his competence in running missions for the secret order of lycanthropes, and he rose through the ranks, becoming an Artemian Duke, the highest rank. Over time, he came to genuinely believe in their cause as well-To end all discrimination against all misunderstood peoples, not just lycanthropes (Editor's note: Lycanthropy does not corrupt your base nature or your alignment in this game). More than that, he found himself attracted to Edena-her beauty, her intelligence, her fighting spirit, but most of all, her kindness-When not the raging warrior he had met on the bridge of her ship, Edena was a caring, motherly woman that belived in the inherent good of people, no matter their station in life-people like Jacob. Unfortunately, she did not share the opinion of him as he of her. Indeed, the more obvious it became that Jacob was starting to fall for her, she only became more distant from him, adopting a stern face when in his prescence (Editor's note: Actually, he's wrong about her not being attracted to him: She's just in complete denial about it). Therefore, Jacob made another promise to himself-That he would win the heart of Edena, no matter what it took.

And so, when Erebin Pullusia opened his gate to his home world, he took Jacob, one of his four most loyal and sucessful minions with him...

And really, what's to stop one from doing the most wicked deeds if they are driven by love?

Personality: Jacob is a headstrong, intelligent young man with a manipulative streak. He enjoys toying with the emotions of his enemies, making a battle with him as much a mental one as a physical one. He uses his army of dread fiyhrs to great effect, using them to terrify his current targets into giving them enough emotional energy to reproduce, then restarting the cycle with a new set. It is not an exaggeration to say that one never knows exactly what to expect when one is watching for his "demoralizing tactical agents".

Despite his obvious enjoyment of his enemy's pain, Bok is not a truly evil person. After a battle with him, he displays a merciful, kind side, often using his knowledge of voodoo to heal his defeated opponents up enough to get them to the nearest safe point to lick their wounds unless specifically ordered not to. This is not entirely selfless: survivors guarantee stories about him, which feeds his bogeyman powers. Still, his ability to show mercy hints at a secret, repressed conscience. He also shows another redeeming feature in his love for Edena-As he himself notes, it would probably be easier and safer to not get attached to his employers, but he likes other people more than he would like to believe.

Goals: Bok's most immediate goal is, of course, to win Edena's love and attention. Besides all the other usual goals of a pirate-gold, fame, pleasurable company (just because he's truly in love with another person doesn't mean he now hates prostitution)-, he also secretly desires a way to dispose of his bogeyman side-he has come to despise the growing darkness it represents, and his fey powers with it. Contrary to stereotypical goals of those who were "cursed" with magic, however, Bok embraces his; having magic powers in exchange for a thirst for more power isn't that bad of an exchange.

Questions? Comments? Ideas? Should I scrap the whole thing?

Jacob is fantastic! Very original, and quite a formidable opponent as well! I like it a lot.

Plus, who doesn't love a voodoo-wielding bogeyman magic-addict pirate?

Will have more comments when I'm not so tired.

Ooh, you finished the write-up! I wanted to post earlier, but I didn't want to interrupt the flow in your posts.

Good stuff! This level of detail is what good villains are made from.
