So, I notice that some people have custom titles. What do you have to do to get these custom titles? In most places I go, it involves being a good member of the forum for at least a few months, but it seems to be more strict here.

I'm not saying that the normal titles are bad, I'm just wondering what you would have to do.

If you mean the "custom title in the Playground"(as seen as mine), that was a joke by one of the Moderators, and will be reset quite soon. The others are either Moderators or contest winners. All other titles are regulated by the post-count system, as explained here.

Second, the only way to get a custom title here is to win one of our Design Contests. (Or, I suppose, to be a moderator, admin, or victim of a recent Rawhide prank (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=81335).)

We used to have an individual field to play with before it was snipped to give the server more resources. You'll see some people putting their playful notes into the Location field instead. (And before you ask why the unimportant post counts weren't snipped instead, how can you have a Giant in the Playground without Everyone Else in the Playground?)
