View Full Version : The Two Brothers: A non-OotS style webcomic

Beholder1995
2008-06-06, 01:50 PM
All below material (except where otherwise noted), including comics, characters, and maps is the creative property of Beholder1995.

Herein lies the tale of Philmoore and Frederick, two Teutonic Knights on a quest to find their lost brethren. I lack any computer art equipment of any kind, so these comics are ones that I've hand-drawn and scanned. I apologize for illegible and/or crude handwriting or any kind of mistakes or blemishes in the art. If there's a problem, or you have a comment, well- that's why there's a thread.

Updates are kind of sporadic... aiming for at least once a week... you can expect more due to their small sizes, but don't get your hopes up. :smalltongue:

I found this deep within the bowels of my Art Folder. This is essentially a primordial precursor to what would become The Two Brothers. It was originally intended to be a spoof of Age of Empires II (if you haven't played the game to a great extent, this comic will be utterly lost on you.) I made this one a while ago, but never followed up on it. Anyway, I thought I'd show it here. Behold!

Here are Fred and Phil's ancient ancestors, the Centurions Fredius and Philius!

I finished my first ever map of the north half of the TTB world! It's pretty rough, though- just rivers, mountains, and a few major locations.

I like your art style, it's simple, but as Oots has proved simple can be a good thing. It's quite a nice change from all the Oots style comics popping up as of late as well.

So, is this going to be set in the "real world"? They are Teutonic knights after all. Or is gonna be set in a fantasy world of some sort?

Well, they are Teutonic Knights, but other than that, it will be in a world I designed. In my world, the Teutonic Knights have traditionally guarded the neck of land between the north and south halves of the map. While it will be in a fantasy world, there will be little or no magic, and thus this won't be D&D oriented. EDIT: Also, they will have generaly Germanic sounding names, whether I make them up or not.

Glad you liked it! I was really nervous there...

Love the art, is simple but gives the impression of greandeur, how much comedy can I expect from the comic, large amounts or every so often?

Well, I'll try to include at least one punchline per two comics. (The quality of the jokes is pending.)

Speaking of which, here's comic #2!

Strong follow up and the comic looks good, the comedies awkward for the characters which is good but I wouldn't overuse it. One complaint though, the text is a bit cramped and stuff, are you doing it by hand?

Yeah, I'm doing it by hand. If it's an issue, I'll try to be neater.

Oregano

It's only a slight issue, if you find it hard to write so small you could add the text after you've scanned it(And it'd be a lot better quality text) but it's not an obligation, it's great quality as is.

Also, I like the new strip very much too, it's funny :)

It's definately not, but since I replaced the old image with the new one, you might still have the old image cached. Try reloading the page (f5).

I like simple black and white comic's. I will have to add this to the (fictional) list of web-comics threads I frequent.

However, there is no way to identify which character is which. That could become confusing.

Don't worry. Soon Frederick and Philmoore will be the only Teutonic Knights in the comic, and you can tell them apart by height (Philmoore has a more elongated helmet.)

@Tiffanie: Thanks. Adding the banners!

Also, I made a minor change to that first banner, there was just a black rope with nothing on it, so I moved the yoyo up a bit. Because the yoyo rocks ;)

I'm changing the update schedule to 1/day on weekdays, o most dedicated readers , due to an unfortunate turn of events. (In other words, I'm lazy and can't think of what to do next at the moment.) It will remain 2/day on weekends.

Nice job. Very newspapery feel to it. And your update schedule makes me happy, but I do agree it'll be hard to manage if you have too many comics on here, just because of the sheer amount of space the archives would take.

I'd recommend doing what the Failing Saves thread did with its archives, once you get up in numbers. That way the first post isn't overly cluttered.

Just a suggestion though.

Ah... well. I'm going to be in New York for the next few days, and thus won't be able to update again until Saturday. But as compensation, today you all get a special, six-panel The Two Brothers! I would've managed to update more today, but for some reason my computer was unwilling to access GiantITP. Hmmm. #13!

Damn, it'll be worth the wait, unless of course you're open to guest comics:smallwink:. I know you don't like OOTS style(for this comic that is), but that's what mine would have to be, of coruse it'd have no bearing on the actual story.

Also even if I wanted to do one, I have to do my own webcomic and revise for my last exam so I might not be able to, anyway, what say you to that?

Heck, who ever said I don't like OOTS-style? I like it a lot, I just don't draw that way. If anyone wants to do a guest comic, be... well... my guest! I just won't be able to put on the first post until Saturday. (EDIT::: Unless It's here before 9-ish tonight. I have to get up really early tommorow.)

Cool, I won't be done by 9 tonight(wherever you are), because it's nearly one here, But I'll try and do a guest comic.

I went back and editted my post because I realised you must like the OOTS style otherwise you wouldn't be on here, I just meant in the context of the webcomic.

Here's the first guest comic, I may do more in the time Beholder1995 is away. I decided to stay true to the comics three panel set up(that's not counting the last strip). So Here it is.

http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm216/Beholder1995/TheTwoBrothersComic14-1.gif

And Oregano- awesome comic. That's going up on the main post. Thanks!

P.S. In panel 3 Fred's helmet got a teeny bit smudged. I hope it's not an issue. :smallwink:

Oregano
2008-06-21, 01:38 PM
Woop, the proper comic's back and it's back on top form, I think the smudging made it look like he was battle damaged and a bit of a badass to be honest.

Glad you like the guestcomic, I was planning on doing more but it just didn't happen, I may do them another time, it was fun to make, especially with the short strip set up, you have less chance of stretching things needlessly.

What do you think of the OOTS Fred and Philmoore?

Thanks, but I just noticed an omission on my part, they don't have sleeves also sleeves may have cluttered them so maybe it's for the best.

I was also wondering(well actually my brother thought of it when he saw me drawing the guestcomic) if you'd mind Frederick and Philmoore having a cameo in my comic?

I found this deep within the bowels of my Art Folder. This is essentially a primordial precursor to what would become The Two Brothers. It was originally intended to be a spoof of Age of Empires II (if you haven't played the game to a great extent, this comic will be utterly lost on you.) I made this one a while ago, but never followed up on it. Anyway, I thought I'd show it here. Behold!

(I was not as careful with pencil lines back then, it seems.)

Oregano
2008-06-22, 02:41 PM
haha, that's funny, how did you develop the style of drawing by the way, it's just fun looking.

The art isn't even that bad in the old comic.

Beholder1995
2008-06-22, 03:01 PM
Well, that style originated with OOTS. I used to- believe it or not, freehand my drawings as utter ripoffs of Order of the Stick. Over time, however, the hands and bodies became more rounded, and they got feet, legs, arms, and necks, to the point where only the round heads and lack of noses were hints as to my style's origins. So I guess that, in a way, my comic was also made possible by OOTS and Mr. Burlew.

I take it you don't play Age of Empires.

Oregano
2008-06-22, 03:06 PM
Nope, well i've played it once and one my friends was playing it the other week but other than that, nope. I take it Skirmishers are/were overpowered and tend to destroy units? It's still funny though even if you don't play it(just probably not as funny).

It's a great art style by the way.

Tiffanie Lirle
2008-06-22, 03:24 PM
@^- Nah Skirmishers were pretty awful units, all they did was throw these really weak spears. Mix that in with the fact that it would take like 100+ hits for a skirmisher to kill a Teutonic knight, and you have allot of wasted spears.

I used to play a great deal of Age of Empires, ironically, my favorite units were the Teuton's special unit, the Teutonic knight.. <.<

I've lost my cd though. :smallfrown:

Well said. It was funny because if the real world worked like the game, a real-life Teutonic Knight could have a dozen spears shoved through his chest and barely even be hurt. Hence Phil's casual nature.

That's just natural, Fred's the straight man, he's not meant to be funny and I think it's cool he's saving a sheep, you should save any living thing you find in a fire.

Well, it is now noon, FST. I have tallied up the whopping eight votes, and the winner, by two votes is..... B!

On another note, I finished a rough outline of the north half of the TTB world, in map form!

Well, it's the moment of truth. I've tallied up the whopping eight votes that came in, and the winner, by a full two points is..... B!

On another note, I finished my first ever map of the north half of the TTB world! It's pretty rough- just rivers, mountains, and a few major locations. Still!

Anondurl
2008-11-16, 10:58 AM
Well it would be where all the comic writers could announce updates and where all the fans could post requests for new updates if the artist is late. Also the artist could post that there would be no more updates for X days or weeks.
it is a great idea.

Well I'm a huge fan of knights, and I like most of what you've done, but I do have a few complaints.

the first are your speech bubbles, or rather, lack thereof. in some scenes it makes it difficult to tell who said what, and in others it looks like background scenery, such as your t-shaped stars, (I've drawn stars like that too... they really shiny ones do indeed seem to take a t-ish shape) are part of the text.

the second is that in some scenes you're a little too simplistic, and it's hard to distinguish certain objects. shading the night sky would also be helpful.

third is a problem real knights shared on the battlefield: it's hard to distinguish one character from another while in full plate. Real knights used family or personal emblems, but the Teutonic knights, to my knowledge, did not, which I assume is why you did not implicate any such means of identification. however, since the comic doesn't take place on earth, I think it would be acceptable to give each knight a different pattern on his or her surcoat so we can tell them apart while they have their helms on.

fix those, and It'll be awesome.
