View Full Version : Spore: Creature Creater Demo: Right Around Corner

Phase
2008-06-06, 05:53 PM
In just over a week, the demo for the unequivocally greatest game of all time, Spore, will be released. A retail version, going for ten dollars, will allow you to create your very own creature in Spore's unique editor. It will contain all possible parts. A downloadable version is identical aside from the fact that it only contains 25% of the parts.

Thoughts? Ideas? Proclamations of love?

Assuming the servers won't immediately crash from 10 million simultaneous hits, I'm going to download the free version but wait to buy the actual game.

And while 10,000 of those 10 million make Zerglings I want it to be said I'm the first person I know of to have had the idea. :smalltongue:

Actually, that's essentially the idea. I was watching Will Wright talk about the game, and he said the first part(s) of the game, up until the galactic phase, were sort of 'tutorials' for the various editors (creature, building, vehicle, ship), until you get to the 'playground' of the galactic phase, where you can do, almost literally, whatever the hell you want.

Meh.

I never got the hype over this game, to be honest. I'll probably give it a spin, but I'm not peeing my pants over it. I'd rather have Dawn of War 2.:smallwink:

And I seriously doubt it's going to be the best game of all time. Seems seriously overhyped to me.

How can you charge $10 for a demo that is so lame.

It would be ok if it comes with a discount on the game for $10 but thats it.

I still don't quite understand the sheer number of orgasms that people seem to be having over this game. Sure, it looks interesting (or at least, it did when it was first shown, shortly before Columbus discovered America), but there doesn't seem to be anything truly amazing about it. Mayhaps I am overly sceptical but apart from the Lego-esque fun that one can have sticking all kinds of crazy crap together, I worry that the actual game will be a let-down.

For some reason I can't help but remember when Black And White first came out amid rabid praise that it was to have the best damn creature AI that anyone had ever seen. And then you spent your entire time in frustration trying not to make your pet fling its crap at people's houses. Nice idea, crappy execution.

it'll still be awesome.

That would be neat. Why stop there? Create an octopus with laser beam attached to each of it's tentacles...

There isn't a problem solved by 1 laser beam that isn't solved by 8!!

Demo is free, but comes with limited content. The full creature creator has 100% of the in-game creature options, but costs $10.

That said, I'm jazzed. Spore is very high on my list of must-have games, right up with Dawn of War II and Galciv2: Twilight of the Arnor.

I too have been playing with the free editor. If I can, I'll be grabbing the full.
What has most surprised me is just how complex your creatures can become without realising. When I begin, I have a simple idea in my head, but when I'm done I don't recognise the thing in front of me, yet I know it is better than what I was thinking.
Anyway, my creations:
An... ice... bug... thing. (http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a155/Jibar/CRE_Achatheropod-067f3fdf_ful.png) I dunno. He squirts stuff at enemies, I know that.
An evil duck monster. (http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a155/Jibar/CRE_Discopolus-067f3fe1_ful.png) No, seriously.
Six grabbers, no regrets. (http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a155/Jibar/CRE_TheraloththeMangulator-067f3fe0.png) This guy has some serious punching potential.

My latest creation, and quite probably one of the simplest. I might post bigger pictures in future posts, but it seems that the editor is aware enough to sacrifice shiny graphics for framerate, as I've got nice smooth editorplay, but the textures are crap.

The full version and demo has been delayed to the 22nd for Europe and 18th for USA, the leaked game made the unprepared servers implode as thousands of creatures just appeared.

They've also disabled all logins except for the version celebrities get and you have to wait until the servers are fixed to log on.

To think, if it wasn't leaked I wouldn't have got an e-mail two hours before midnight saying that is has been delayed a week.

EDIT: I just got an e-mail saying that the release has changed AGAIN. This time, though, it's gone forward to the 17th. Let's hope it stays this way.

I'm assuming they've just streamlined it down to make it simple, but I don't know how it's going to work in the main game. Some of the stuff I've made doesn't make a lot of sense, with horns on tails adding to charging strike damage. But I guess since I tend to make small cute critters then it's a benefit to give them tiny claws and horns and still have them pack a wallop.

Does anyone have any problems with saved creatures not showing up in the Sporepedia?

Also, did you know that you can hold tab to get advanced controls over most pieces. You can also duplicate segments of limbs by holding control and dragging, then pressing shift to snap the duplicated section onto an available limb, and you can also copy by holding alt.

Is it just me, or is anyone else disappointed parts don't scale in usefulness with size? Anyone else going to make mice able to topple elephants because of this?

Hey, those backgrounds, that's the full version, right?

I love weird creatures, but really, I have the impression that I'd need something with hands at least to play the full game...dunno, I'll just try whatever looks nice. I don't want to play this with a min/max mindset. No fun that way.

Presenting: Clibanarii!

Front view:

http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh314/13cbs/CRE_Clibanarii-0682c909_ful.png

Designed primarily for combat. Thick armor to provide protection, three bone spikes on long, strong arms for damage, complex eyes on front, back, and top for a wide and detailed range of vision (and usually surrounded by armor plates to minimize exposure), floats so it can't really trip, long dexterous fingers for manipulation of tools and weapons, mandibles for powerful bites, and shooting organs on arms, sides, and back for an almost 360o ranged defense. And, though it's hard to see, it has a pair of antennae behind its top stalk eyes and a pair of ears to help target enemies.

Unfortunately, the spikes might interfere with certain hand movements, the top stalk eyes are somewhat vulnerable, and although its belly is armored, the Clibanarii is in trouble if something gets underneath. Oh, and its name completely lacks creativity.

That would be neat. Why stop there? Create an octopus with laser beam attached to each of it's tentacles...

There isn't a problem solved by 1 laser beam that isn't solved by 8!!

Two more that I like.

Martin. (http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a155/Jibar/CRE_Martin-0684317b_ful.png) A water predator, designed to sit patiently in the shallows and snatch up anything that gets too close. If it a little big than normal snatching will allow, he shoots off his spit cannon to kill the thing first, then drag it onto land before any other predator finds the corpse.

Mr Leggy. (http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a155/Jibar/CRE_MrLeggy-0684317c_ful.png) A distant cousin of Mr Grabby, Mr Leggys are gentle giant herbivores, wandering across the world searching for their soul mates. Mr Leggys are gentle by nature, preferring singing to fighting, and always flee, despite their more often than not superior height.

Just downloaded it, made two creatures in a few minutes. I'm seeing a lot of people making crazy stuff for kicks, but I'm trying to make realistic animal like things. At least, those are the only ones I'm going to upload. I think a world populated by crazy weird creatures would actually just be kind of annoying.

The first thing I made was mostly getting used to the system. Turned out a little odd, but functional. Kindof misshapen scorpion beasty with a nice theme of threes. Called it the Trijag.

My second creation is awesome. It is very simple, made it in probably under 4 minutes. Little half frog, half ape, with a carnivore bitey mouth because that's all I can add. Little froglike humanoid with small fin/wings on it's back and frog eyes. Pretty awesome, actually. Named it the Phiban.

Over the next two weeks I'll be creating extreme amounts. I'll buy the full version tomorrow. Then I have a plane trip to Spain measuring hours in the double digits, so I'll get my whole computer battery's worth of time making more stuff.

Well, I went out and bought the full creature creator a few days ago, and here's what I've come up with thus far:

The first thing I made was a triffid, simply because triffids are awesome.

The next was a generic bee-person named Beelzeb. This is where I first figured out that you could use wings.

The next was Ballisticol, another bug based around the whole spit attack weapons.

Then there was Spurarmy, who exemplifies the results of what happens when you put a bunch of sharp things on a lizard.

And finally, there is Bloche, a lovecraftian horror. Yes, he has arm-mouths.

Not for Mac it isn't :smallfrown: The demo version came out the same time as the PC*, but the full version hasn't been released yet.

I'm trying to figure out the best place to get the proper release version of Spore for Mac when it's released in a couple of months, as there's not a lot of Mac software stores. The usual place I buy games don't cater for Macs, and since I recently converted to an iMac I haven't found a decent software store.

*Actually, the Mac version was released a few minutes after the PC; I just happened to be checking the official site just when it was released and spent a couple of frantic minutes trying to figure out why only the PC version was downloadable.

Well, my guess would be it would indicate what time in the game they can step in. Less complex creatures can start appearing into the game sooner than more complex creatures which might need more time to 'evolve'. That's just a guess.

I've gotten the demo, and I've had enough of a blast with it to get the full thing. I made a good deal of creatures with only the quarter of parts there, it'll be great to see what I can make with all of the pieces.

They stated ages and ages and ages and ages and ages ago (probably around the time they first announced it), that they were going to ban penis monsters straight off.
You should never ever find one, unless you make it yourself.
Of course, there's gonna be a lot of 'em, and some are gonna slip through, but then think, what are the chances you'll get them instead of one of the hundreds of thousands of non-penises?
If I get one, I'll just declare war and proceed with Plan ExGenesis. I wanted to be a tyrant anyway.

Oh my GOD!

I finally get the full version of Spore thanks to gametreeonline.com which released the game for 20 minutes then took it down for a week and I actually watched the window close for a chance to get it then.

Now I've waited and FINALLY have the full version of Spore for Mac. My money clears and I download. It installs great, but NOW THERE IS AN ERROR!
"The game can not start
Not Found:GL:5538"

There is a fix on the spore support page for PC only, and it is still very vague and doesn't explain what is actually happening so I can't try to mimic it. If you search google for "Not Found:GL:5538" you get two results of people asking this same question, but no answer except "Buy a real PC."

EA is the devil of all computer game companies.

P.S. I forgot... My trial version no longer works as well, and during the uninstall of the trial version I was "required" to delete all of my creatures.

Ok, so let's get this right...

This is a game wich lets you to create monsters and look at them, and nothing more?

You can't engange in battles or make armies or build an economy or something else than just looking at your and other people's creations?

If yes, then I find more exciting to take a course in bio-chemistry and develop real world mutants. And I suck at chemistry.

The Creature Creator lets you make and look at yours and others' creatures only.

The full game of Spore, which is yet to be released, but will come out soon will allow you to play as your creature/civilisation of creatures all the way from the cellular level to the space exploration age. Battles and armies are definitely in, economies probably (there is resource gathering at any rate) and there is a whole lot more besides, most especially exploration both of your planet and an entire system's worth of planets but also all sorts of activities with your creature.

As for me, I'd link to my creations or something, but the creature creator is consistently unable to connect to the network. I've already given it a firewall exception, but that did nothing to fix the problem. It is not just because the servers are overloaded, as the problem occurs pretty much instantly, and other people are still able to access the servers.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I've been having a load of fun creating creatures but as yet I've been unable to share them with anyone but me.

Running on Windows XP (yeah, yeah) SP3, and my internet connection works fine usually.
