The Setting:
Greenridge: A small hamlet of tenets dwarfed by a larger ghost town. Located on a dry plain 20 miles inland of Dross's western administration center, Lynx, Greenridge was named after the area's thin copper ore, not grass. Nearly all trade to and from Lynx comes and goes by river to the north and never sees this place. The land is just a touch too dry and monotonous for nobel estates, and the herding nomads usually frequent the village of GoldWell 10 miles east, or Leavening 15 miles to the south west. No one comes to Greenridge ever, except for a single month every third year. Every third summer Pogin's Grand Fair sets up camp in Greenridge and showcases exhibits of magic, creatures of myth, and shows of uncommon skill. The nobility come to socialize at one of the few events worthy of their attention. The middle class spends months saving to come see wonders in relative safety. The peasants come flocking to sell their goods to a horde of well-to-dos who find themselves in the middle of no-where far from home: that and for the chance to see the few freebies available. For one month ever third year Greenridge swells from 200 to nearly 5,000. This is that month.

Although the fair only lasts five days, people have been coming for weeks to renovate the town for the influx of wealthy patrons, set up the venue, and to sell food to all the workers. Anticipation has been building up to this moment: yesterday, with great fanfare and a little show, The Fair opened. Today the grounds are covered with creatures of all types, sizes, and colors. Some are performers, like the goblin who's wearing a clapboard sign that says "information: 1cc" and juggling daggers while standing on the back of a strolling worg. Others, like yourselves, are Olympic hopefuls attracted by the special qualification event being held. There are also a few very rich and powerful creatures, like the huge blue dragon, that are patrons of the arts and rumored to have come to personally sponsor a Planar Olympic Team. A small awestruck crowed is watching (from a prudent distance) the dragon conversing with an equally massive cloud giant clad in finery that would make some kings envious: probably also another patron.

Things to do:
Everywhere you look people are selling. Food, metal work, art, and even minor magical items. Street performers are standing at every third corner, and pavilions promise fantastic shows to anyone willing to cough up the gold. The standard games of chance or skill line the fair ground offering prizes all sorts to winners and a few rides to boot, but four of the contests are a little different. Four of the contests give the right to compete in (or free viewing of) the Olympic Trial events held latter in the week.

The first unusual event is something called Whack-a-Rat. The second is Zigly's Animated Shooting Gallery. The third is Henry's Obstacle Tower, and the forth is something called Barrel Shootout. Beyond the names and the knowledge of the basic rules of the official qualification events you know little.

Where You Start:
Alexis: You find yourself standing just outside the Southeast gate leading into the formal Fair Ground Proper. It is also the only gate that opens up straight to the desert and not to the town of Greenridge, and as such is relatively uncrowded. On your left is a large sun-bleached sign covered in relatively small writing titled "Fairground Rules and Regulations" ((Is your animal companion with you our 'parked' someplace outside?))

Hallia:
You try to step out of the crowed that is flowing in through the eastern north gate and have a flying piece of manure narrowly miss you followed by a jovial "Sorry!" You realize you are standing perilously close to a stockade in front of which venders are selling spoiled eggs and vegetables, rubbish, and ripe manure to through at those petty criminals who have been placed in the stockade. There are only three in the mostly empty stockade, but it's still early in the day. The stockades are located in front of a large heavily reinforced building with a sign stating "Fairground Criminal Detention Center."

Cac-kt:
Outside the western North Entrance you pause beneath a large defaced sign that might have at one point said "Rules and Regulations" It had been noisy, but the surrounding crowd grows suddenly quiet as two halfing children a few feet away pipe up "Wow, you're big. What kind of big bug are you?" Some faces look hungry. Others look nervous and apprehensive.

Reesh'k:
You carefully make your way through the western North Entrance, trying not to let any of the jostling crowed push through you, when your confronted by a pair of brazen salesman: a Dromite standing on a cart pushed by a burly Half-giant. The Dromite immediately starts giving a fast sales pitch for a spicy chicken sandwich with ale, when a wave of silence from the rear engulfs you leaving everyone staring at a pair of Halfling children and a Thri-Kreen. ((I'm assuming you're disguised as some medium-sized humanoid. Please tell me what exactly you're trying to look like))

Go.
Don't worry about meeting your companions (they aren't your companions yet and you'll likely run into them and other flavorful characters naturally anyway). It's about 10:30 in the morning. It's a fair. Have fun, and don't be afraid to ask question either IC for information or OOC for clarification.

Selene stays close to Alexis as she walks. Alexis forces her pet to be on her best behavior, she may not be the strongest beast here today, but she still causes the peasants a bit of unease.

Alexis approaches the sign and reads it.

Reesh is taking the guise of a human wearing a bright red and gold jacket, wielding a cane and a formidable handlebar moustache. If anyone bumps into him, he can bump back with his racial telekenetic force ability, making it so people do not keep walking through him. He uses this ability to look "real" as he manipulates objects with his "cane" or "hands"

He may take other guises during the course of the campaign.

Reesh dismissed the salespeople as unimportant. He did not need to eat or drink, not conventional food anyway. He loved the inherent curiosity of children. Reesh leaned on his illusion cane and waited to see how the "bug" would react.

Also, For future reference OOC stuff like sheet fixes should be posted in the OOC thread.

It's quite a list, the sign is. It appears to have been written and posted at least 20 years ago, and the 'rules' are mostly standard. Most of it is common sense: thievery/swindling/etc is prohibited, inflicting bodily harm/murder is prohibited, and so forth. A few of the more interesting points and things that might effect you:

*Magical curses shall be considered bodily injury.
*Persons who inflict injury or thieve must pay thrice the cost in reparation or forfeit body and/or soul to auction. Repeat offenders may, at magistrates discretion, forfeit additional possessions of no limit up to including body and soul.
*All creatures with an Int of 4 or less must have a guardian who takes full responsibility for said creatures actions.
*No creature of Gargantuan size or larger is permitted in the fairground.
*Poisons must be licensed. Possessors of unlicensed poison may be required to consume said poison.
*Flying is probated without license.
*All sales and transactions must be made by a licensed salesman and subject to tax.
*Injury inflicted to assist in the apprehension of a criminal shall be fined no more than equal cost, a cost which may be waved at a senior officers discretion.
*Scrying of any form is prohibited and subject to fines up to double cost of admission to all fair ground events.
*Evil and Chaotic Outsiders as well as undead must register prior to entry. (this list has been expanded with many now illegible margin scrawlings)
*Blood and flesh of any sentient forbidden except as relates to criminal disposal.
*Conjured food may not be sold.

There are many many more items on the sign. Many are illegible, some are repetitive, and a few like the prohibition of painting fixed structures yellow are just silly.

As you read the sign a small crowed of peasants begins to form about 10 ft away to ooh and aw over Selene. Your pet may make the crowds uneasy (and stay a few steps further back) but she is still exotic enough to be considered a (free) exhibit by the lower class.

Reesh and Cac-kt:
Cac-kt scarcely has time to look at the halfling children before a very worried female scoops up the kids and drags them deep through the crowds away from the Tri-Kreen while pleading "No Harm! They meant no harm!" As the crowed starts to resume it's usual movements the salesmen move on and latch on to a new prospect. However, Reesh's respite is short: seeing a stationary man of means two different sales men and a beggar soon converge: "Mister! A coin for a rummer?" "My Good Man! You would look dashing with a ceremonial blade, which I just happen to have..." "Sir, embroidered silk handkerchief? Only 2 gold!"

Hallia
"HEY! Where's my copper?" The vender shouts as you start to walk off with a wormy apple and squashed beet. The commotion causes a bored looking human and half-orc clad in scale-mail and armed with assorted gear, guards likely, to look over at you. The first criminal, with a sign on his neck saying "Petty Pickpocket: 6 hours" to smile widely. "A gold says you'll be joining me before my times up. But bring me a mango and I might remember..." (A sign half a block down advertises "Exotic Quality Produce")

Leosera
"HEY! Where's my copper?" The cry breaks through and startles you from where you were as you were approaching what passed as the fair's judicial headquarters. After all, who knows better than the law where events are held and what the moral state of the community is? So far the most unusually part of the call is that it is only the second accusative cry you've heard today: most major market districts and events have much more frequent cries...

Alexis notices the people around her and says, "I'm sorry, but Selene doesn't know how to do any tricks. She's more of a fighter than many of the men you'll meet, maybe even some of the women."

Alexis squats and tells Selene, "We have to be on our best behavior today. No hurting anyone unless I say it's allowed. And stay close." She pets Selene, stands up, and walks with her into the fairgrounds to look at some of the games.

Fighting off the urge to rush through the crowd and apprehend this despicable criminal, Leosera convinces himself the thief will be caught by one of the many guards and authorities present, and continues his lazy gaunt about the grounds. Proudly displaying his Kingdom's emblem on his sapphire cape, and smiling at the common 'dirt' girls whenever he stops to look over some eye catching cloths, metals, and various art works. (Which personally interests him more than food.)

I'm going to try to find a certain thing though. Some kind of regional specialty, specific artwork. Perhaps a painting of a local land form or sculptureed bust of a beloved Noble.

Cac-kt

Cac-kt watches the halfling woman dragging the children away, and calmly walks over to the woman, and picks her up in one clawed hand, and the children in another...and speaks, first to the children, then to the mother, and finally to the children again:

''I am Cac-kt, and I am not a bug. Just like you are not a little monkey. I am part of a race known as the Thri-keen, and I come from the barren wastelands of Catakarch!thania.

Now, humble woman...I was not harmed by the small fleshlings, neither physically or emotionally. I quite enjoy talking to little ones. I have few friends.

Ah, but you have not introduced yourself, fleshlings. What are your names, children?'' He says, holding them up to his face as he speaks. He doesn't, however, speak in a threatening tone of voice, rather, speaking slowly, and carefully, like one would to a simpleton.

The crowed disperses somewhat at the news that no tricks will be performed, but clomps of 3-6 individuals keep appearing to watch you and your companion for a short while before moving on. One battered individual comments "I'd hate to tangle with that beast! Those monsters they unleashed in whack-a-rat were bad enough, no sir!, No more fighting for me!" as he drifts away. Anyway, you find games easily enough: Not 100 feet through the gate you come across a simple games of basket toss and a dunking booth.

Leosera

You don't have to worry about seeing stuff for sale: The venders all see you and are quick to cry out their marvelous goods. You soon find yourself contemplating a simple, yet elegant, painted wooden mask complete with feathers (5 gp) and a fine crystal dagger that you are assured is of the highest quality (masterwork) and available on sale for 250 gp. Make an appraise check to confirm value, and/or a gather information check to learn about other quality items for sale.

Hallia
The rotten fruit vender stares dumbfounded and silent at the gold coin. He turns it over as to make sure it's real, before greedily pocketing it. Further down the street the mangos, being semi-exotic, are selling for 1gp each. If you buy, the vender immediately tells you a 10% discount is available on all purchases of 10gp and more, and would you like anything else?

Cac-kt
The woman starts to panic as you follow, but even so your longer legs allow you to easily catch up. She doesn't calm down when you pick her up, but rather starts screaming. One child looks at you silently and wide-eyed, but the other energetically says: "I'm Flounder! You're weird. Have you always been a bug?"

A crowd starts to gather to watch the commotion, but only an other halfling attempts to interfere...

Reesh
Play on! Just give me a hide check to see if the merchants who had been talking with you notice your unnatural disappearance.

"Is this an antique? Did you carve it? Is it crafted of native lumber? Is it a replica of aboriginal designs?" He questions rapidly, not giving the man time to fully answer.
"It's exquisite nonetheless! I'll take it. 5 gold pieces? Here's 5 and 6 silver. Treat your Mrs. to something nice. Leosera drops the coins in the merchant's hands and smiles at his new purchase, playfully putting it over his face before sliding it up on top the top of his head to look at this beautiful dagger.

Delighted at making a friend with the young halfling, he replies: ''Indeed, young fleshling, I have been a bug all my life, and probably will be for the rest of it. I am pleased to meet you, Flounder. Do you know how to make your mother stop screaming? I fear she may damage my ears.''

When the grubby halfling man joins the frey, Cac-kt merely attempts to pick him up as well, so as to see him better while speaking. ''Forgive me, dirty fleshling. I was merely looking and speaking to the little ones. I don't intend to fight you, if possible.''

Right, so a successful (untrained) gives 50-150% of an items actual value:

The mask is the real thing, but the dagger appears to have been mislabeled. It's actually glass. It might make a fine centerpiece and is certainly sharp, but one bad strike and it would shatter. That dagger isn't worth more than 25 gold.

It was an exceptionally juicy mango. Great taste.

Of the four people in front of you, 3 purchased 3 tries and one a single throw. Two of them manage to hit the target, but none on the first throw. When you're up the man in the booth happily at you while wringing out a soaked vest and balancing a dry stray hat atop his wet head. The balls aren't perfect throwing implements(-2), and the distance is a little long (-4) but you still manage to peg the diminutive target (AC 9) on your first toss. With a splash he goes completely under, except for one hand which somehow was holding his still mostly dry hat. You get back in line, and when next up the dunked man takes one measured look at you before hanging his (still dry) hat on a hook. He gives you a smile, and once again you sink him on try #1.

("3-balls" meant "3 attempts to hit")
"Lady, with an arm like that you should make a try Zig's Shooting Gallery." The man comments as he climes back up onto the dunking stool.

Hallia
I believe you ought to make a diplomacy check about now, with a +2 DM Good Role Playing Circumstance Bonus.

Cac-kt
Err, by RAW grapple rules that action is impossible, but for the WOW factor I'm using DM privilege to write an amendment: A creature grappling another creature one size smaller may chose to carry that creature at normal speed with a -10 penalty. This action requires the use of 2 arms. So, using 2 arms to hold the struggling woman, one army to hold the non-struggling children, leaves you with exactly one free arm. Even at that penalty you still hold the woman (this turn), but will need to make grapple checks every round you wish to hold on.

Anyway, the flying constable screams again: "HOLD FAST" as soon as you land again. Your muscles try to lock up in response. (DC 17 will)

Reesh
The human starts to interview the crowed for details, and the dwarf approaches you with a drawn flail. Hallia:
The gnome examines his map for a moment before fishing out a bit of chalk and making a mark. "Thanky, now you just head, ah, that a-way and take a left down Western Avenue until you reach The Central Plaza, and then progress down North Face until you reach the tower." With that he tosses you the map and heads off into the crowd. The map, titled "Official Fair Ground Proper Map: 5sp" is water damaged, but still mostly legible (DC 15 Decipher Script). The streets and chalk-mark are easy to see however. ((Map Drafting in progress, but isn't coming this weekend))

Cac-kt:
Location: A back alleyway ordinarily closed to fair-goers. A couple of inquisitive folks are trickling through other side-streets to see what happened.

"My Children!" The woman shrieks.

"Yes, you are in trouble! ...although not in quite as much as if you had hurt the halfings. Now, set the children down and come with me. You are being charged with disruption of the peace, forceful abduction, as well as any charges the other halfings may wish to claim. And, *sigh* you may claim any grievances yourself if you wish. I repeat: gently place those kids on the ground and slowly come over here."
In the background the woman continues to shriek. With a deeper sigh the winged being addresser her: "Woman, you're safe now: please calm down. Screaming won't accomplish anything accept disrupt the peace even more."

Reesh:
"Fine, we can leave now or wait: your choice." One guard says.

You're standing with your back to a single story building with a guard on either side of you. There is a narrow ally-way 30 ft to your right. There are a few broad thin windows above you. There are also people all around, including a dense flowing crowed 10 ft in front of you and a water-skin vender 20 ft to your left.

"Excuse me, I'm sorry, pardon." streaming forth as he hopes not to offend any of the questionable looking fair goers or hit them with his Lance as it hangs horizontally around the back of his waist.

"Did you see? Did you See? A giant child eating grasshopper! An Angel! A shapeshifting criminal with hostages fleeing arrest! Two rampaging Dragons! Did you see? Did you hear?" The rumors flow thick in the crowed that formed to stare skyward and spread gossip. A few extra inquisitive ones try to work there way around the shops and venues to see for themselves what is happening. Most people are intercepted by vendors defending private areas or armed with sales pitches, but a few people apparently have gotten past and fed their interpretations to the garbling gossip telephone chain.

Unfortunately people are generally unimpressed with long titles. The lower classes care little for the dignitaries of foreign royalty, and the local rich are snobbish. You might get the information from a fellow knight, guard, or such but finding one would take another gather info check. Far easier would be:

A) Appealing to greed and buy someone's used damaged map for 2gp or make a purchase (2sp+) from a vendor to loosen their tongue.

B) Spend a 15 minutes searching for an official information booth to buy a new map at 5sp.

Don't worry too much about time, Leosera has 2 days before preliminary trials close.

Hallia : See PMs

Alexis: Ah, you'll be buying the 2cp viewing pass then. Also, either
A) Make a handle animal check for your mountain lion to stay put outside without malling anyone,
B) Look for a safe place to park your 'pet,'
C) Buy all the viewing passes from any objectors and take your animal companion inside with you. ( (3d10)-14 sp)

Ehem, consider the crowds that follow you around doubled in size. Also consider everyone to now be standing at least 5 ft further back with wary glances from guards.

Shade is plentiful. Peaceful out-of-the-way shade however is quite rare and would require backtracking out toard the less-visited part of the fairground. One alternative is large sign not 30 yards north of you at the plaza corner that says: Exotic Boarding. Whatever it is, its surrounded by its own crowd.

Thus, with great ceremony, they present you a cold-iron commemorative dart and a certificate of entry to the Planar Olympic Obstacle Course Events. They also have you record your name in a large official looking book.

Outside an exotic looking human? taps you on the shoulder as you exit. "Hey mister, want to sell that dart? I'll give ya 2 gold for it."

Cac-Kt
The feathery being takes in your equipment and smiles easily as he continues to press you for (and the halflings) to accompany him. "There will be no imprisonment, not for a first time offense, provided you pay compensation and cooperate. Now just take my hand and don't resist."

The flying creature personally may not be able to force you to comply, but if you're on the run you probably wont have time to talk to other interesting creatures, much less take part in the fare activities.

If you take his hand and are willing you'll find yourself suddenly sliding through reality to emerge inside a spacious stone room.

Reesh Meanwhile shouts fill the air as Reesh suddenly gives the guards the slip, darting into the crowed, around a corner, and behind a vender. [roll0]

Alexis: Exotic Boarding is exotic in every sense of the word. People pay gold to keep animals away from crows. Even more people jostle to ooh and awh over the contents. But what's inside? Almost everything, except horses, ponies, and livestock, and riding dogs. A half dozen skilled workers attend to to a dire-bear, hippogriff, assorted wolves, a massive snake, a lioness, and what appears to be a pair of bison. Somehow the assorted workers are keeping everything somewhat content and calm without anything eating/mauling anything else. That might have to do with the foreman, who is a large dragon.

The Cleric: [roll1] minutes of searching later you find a traveling information worker who sells you a map. Each special event, the shoping districts, unique shows, and eating establishments are all noted. Where to? [roll2]

Cac-kt: Adding to your confusion is the previous visitor to the magistrate, a half-elf who is just outside on a wide stone porch where he is penned to the ground and screaming as several flasks of substance are being poured down is throat. "Come on, drink up. Even if we can't prove you're the assassin possession of poison without license is still illegal. Now hold still and drink up."

The current justice looks up as the halfing woman rushes forward babbling: "Oh, sir! This aberration assaulted us and tried to eat my children! It was horrible! Kill it before it strikes again! Oh Oh Oh! Please I ..."

With a slight role of his eyes he looks at the winged patrole man who simple states: "Disruptions of peace and forced abduction (minor): possibly reckless combat, fleeing arrest, and assault too. I'm off to collect the second party." Before disappearing. The justice looks again at the hysterical halfing, the giggling child, the crying child, at you, and then back at the halfling before banging a mace for silence.

"Well?" he asks you.

Cac-kt nervously looks around, his instincts telling him to flee, but he quelled those instincts. If he was to get out, he'd have to proove his innocence. Mentally going through the halflings and the winged mans accusations, he tried to address them all.

"I don't think I assaulted anyone. I was just trying to talk with Flounder here," Cac-kt reaches forward and picks up Flounder, holding him high to show everyone. "Then that fleshling" gesture towards halfling woman, put down Flounder. "tried dragging Flounder away, worried that he was going to hurt me." With that, Cac-kt clicks his mandibles together a few times. "I don't know why she thought that. He's so little, I could've hurt him. I tried to pick up the larger fleshling to better speak with her. Suddenly she was screaming, and her mad brother came out from nowhere and attacked us. I did try to protect myself and the fleshlings, but her brother was like a ghost. His sword wasn't though. It hurt." Cac-kt then presents one of his wounds on his arm for inspection. A blob of purple blood drips off. "To try and protect the fleshlings, I tried to loose him. Then the winged fleshling appeared and started chasing me. I kept on trying to run, in case he was friends with the mad fleshling. I think I accidentally dropped the larger fleshling, and the winged one caught us. After he talked to us, I came with him." after a breif pause he adds: "I didn't mean to do anything wrong, and I didn't hurt anyone. I tried to hurt the mad one, but just a little, but I couldn't."

Looking around hopefully, Cac-kt sees the half-elf being force-fed poison, and his gaze lingers there.

*sniff* "I'm Gold-Lilly sir, and he never did anything to hurt me, unlike that... thing.. which tried to eat us... that young hafling was my savior! ... if only I knew his name..." With further questioning it becomes apparent that the aggressor, while never threatening the woman, was not her brother.

"With your aggressor at large and fleeing arrest I'm dropping the proposed charge of reckless combat." The magistrate tells you. "Now: why did you believe the aggressive halfing was a threat to this woman and her children? why did you delay so long before relenting the the deputy's orders?"

Meanwhile the guards step back to let the half-elf sit up, who weakly makes it to his knees before vomiting. For the moment he's alive and moving. Whether he'll still be up and moving an hour from now is questionable. Either he's made of tough stuff or his poisons were all mild.

"The stocks are a contraption that holds the convicted in place in public so that others may see, mock, and take warning. The public advisory is a question/answer session where new rules are announced and the current interpretation of old ones may be discussed. Oh, and payment later is not an option. We can send an agent to retrieve funds for you, and you have the right to accept twice the time incarcerated for half the fine. If a criminal is still unable to pay their possessions will be confiscated until the debt is payed. Repeat offenses are expensive so I'd strongly suggest attending the public advisory session." the magistrate says, mostly by rote. Payment quibbles are probably common.

A base attack bonus is an attack roll bonus derived from character class and level or creature type and Hit Dice (or combinations thereof). Base attack bonuses increase at different rates for different character classes and creature types. A second attack is gained when a base attack bonus reaches +6, a third with a base attack bonus of +11 or higher, and a fourth with a base attack bonus of +16 or higher. Base attack bonuses gained from different sources, such as when a character is a multiclass character, stack. My BaB is 6.

((If you wish you may move on with the fair even though the fluff still isn't finished.))

((First third of the promised ballad. Apologies that it still isn't done. Further apologies for any cadence issues.))

You are ushered into an airy pavilion. Instead of chairs the patrons have their choice of hide covered benches or fluffy cushions on the floor. Cool water is complimentary as is a small loaf of spice bread. Wine, cheese, and fruit are available for extra (1gp small serving, 5gp platter). Perhaps 35 others join you in the pavilion to watch the coming show. Most are human, but there is a smattering of other humanoids, including one ornately clad cloud giant under the effects of a compression spell.

Before you stands a low wooden platform, with curtains on the three sides not facing the audience. A bard comes out and sits on the edge of it holding a beautiful stringed instrument. For several minutes he plays a slow wistfully melody as a two more stragglers enter and are seated in the back.

"A tale you wish to hear I see." The bard suddenly begins. "A tale you shall receive, no it is more than a tale." He continues slowly still playing. "An epic ballad of valor with as much lore as glamor you shall hear, and even see. The Battle of Nail Hill we now present to thee!"

At this point the bard suddenly stands and tosses his instrument aside, but the music does not end: a drum and lonely woodwind off stage start their own haunting melody.

"Nail hill, you must understand, was more than a simple, single, hill: greater still than its old iron mine, for gold struck and rubies were found, thin yet assuredly there. All this that stood below the Humnaheims, that dwarven realm of the Emerald Mountains tall and above the rocky Gnarlwood forest that BloodFist, the goblin chieftain king, had claimed. For years a human buffer town lived between the foes, and hilltop tower built as well. But! when the pox came through and men moved on that hill, tower crowned, stood on. Contested ground it surely was and those goblins moved in quick, but with gold at stake and an encroaching foe the dwarves could not look mildly on: A dwarf march took war to old nail hill."

Alexis:

It's a lonnng fight: the rat alternates between attacking you and trying to flee, but mostly dodges your attacks. Eventually, the whistle is blown with you never hitting the rat. Also, unless a 15 hits you for 3 damage, the rat never landed a return blow either.

You have one more try for melee qualification left. The fair will continue accepting qualifications for the next two days so you can replan before returning.

Alexis

Actually, you need 2 checks to cross each obstacle at normal movement rate: Each climbing wall is 15 ft: 15/ (0.25 * 40) = 1.5, or 2 checks. The balance section is 30 ft: 30 / (40 * .5) = 1.5, or 2 checks.

Anyway, you fail the second check on obstacle #3 and the first check at obstacle #4. Since the failure is less than 5 you merely don't make progress instead of falling back to the bottom, but I still need replacement checks for those.

Also: does a [roll0] hit? Give yourself a +2 AC bonus for knowing it's there. If it connects, take [roll1] subdual damage and fall to the bottom of obstacle #4 if a [roll2] exceeds your strength role.

Apparently he's there now, wandering around, looking for things to do when he catches sight of a fetching young lady, begins to approach her and fits in what he believes to be a very clever and well timed flirt/invitation.

"Welll, discounting all the common dunking booths, ring tosses, and such sounds like the only real challenge you've missed is the barrel ride, assuming ridding interests a gall like you."

Leosera Ah, sorry, but Alexis is in the private back room as it were. However, if you wish to pay to view the tower climb you could easily have seen her and be waiting outside to congratulate her on her success, or you could have do the challenge yourself (without a preview) and thus have walked in on them to finalize your own reward.

Food: the fair is full of food. Roasted nuts, imported fruits, baked potatoes and more can be found on the corners. There is even one booth serving roasted rat to those who want a more personal vengeance on the rodents after the Wac-a-Rat challenge. For avian there are two establishments that come recommended. Soup Stand offers a watery chicken and potato soup with crackers that comes cheap at 7cps, but the best taste for the coin has to be the Emu Butcher that offers a rich Emu Salad or a massive fried drumstick steaming hot (probably actually turkey but still much larger than a chicken's) for a mere 2 and half silvers.

Also, If you want a real fancy place where stewards will wait on you, the Entourage can serve almost anything very well, but at 2 gold a head entry fee, plus food, it's not for the budget conscientious.

:smallconfused:
Huh?

I thought that's what I posted, a "work over."

Anyway, the problems with the last action were:
• Declaring a new location. A relatively minor issue, but it works best to state the means and intent rather than claim a result.

• Declaring Extra Knowledge. Again not a major issue, but it helps to keep player and character knowledge somewhat separate.

• Setting conflict: In a game of cooperative story telling I'm happy to readjust the setting when it's not explicit, although some concessions may be requested to help keep the background and world mechanics smooth. Again, a minor issue.

Anyone of the above could have been hand-waved with minimal changes, but compound complicated issues quickly become complex major issues even if the initial pieces were all minor.

Advice for the future:
A) Take smaller steps: moving from outside a theater into a conversation inside a challenge booth halfway across the fair ground takes more than a single line of text.

B) Declare intents and direct actions. The less guess work and gray I read the more likely your attempts will meet clear success or memorable IC obstacles.

C) If you want to work something complex out, PM me. I check my PM's frequently and would be happy to work with you to achieve something you think is pure awesome.

Cac-kt
Half the crowd turns to look at you. The speaker looks confused for a moment, and looks at a bookish-scholar who only looks confused back. After a brief moment she says: "Ah, I'm not familiar with this 'Floundar.' That question would be better asked of either the marshals or the information department. Any other questions?"

(If you don't have any other questions the session ends 10 minutes later after a few of the other delegates ask for interpretations of obscure legal codes or recent rulings against others in their business.)

Nail Hill Reenactment (this is as complete as it ever will be)

You are ushered into an aery pavilion.

Contested ground it surely was and those goblins moved in quick, but with gold at stake and an encroaching foe the dwarves could not look mildly on: A dwarf march took war to old nail hill."

ohHOOOWWWN

A horn blares as the bard delivers the final line and the air behind the stage shimmers before settling into the illusion of a ruin-strewed grassy hill with a dark wood in the background to the left and majestic mountains to the right. A quartet of dwarves of and a half-dozen goblins appear as well, with three real dwarves and four real goblins also stepping on stage as well.

"And thus that battle began!" the bard suddenly screams while the two sides lunge at each-other. The goblins open with a volley of javelins, and the dwarves reply with crossbows before the two sides before the two forces met with a clash of shields, axes, and maces. The reenactors are all fighting defensively and pulling blows to avoid lethal strikes, but they are truly fighting. As a combatant falls they are pushed off the back of the stage, and a few seconds later they reenter again from the wings as if fresh units in a massive struggle. Nearly two minutes slowly tick past before a worg with an elaborately decorated goblin rider enters the stage as well as a buff dwarf in gleaming armor. The bardic narrator also reappears striding amount the still fighting combatants and new challengers.

"The goblins, 200 strong with worg allies besides fought as one under RawBreath's banner against IronFist and his 150 souls." The bard continues as the two new combatants join against the other in a swirling frenzy, and the bard continues into a genealogy and listing of others of fame: a still contrast to the beating drums and clash of steal elsewhere.

After two more minutes of reeling and fighting the goblin leader is knocked out and dragged halfway across the stage by his battered mount. "With time, a full hour more than you see today, IronFist and his kin began to prevail, but then! Then that lizard, RustingBreath, a great dragon huge in size, it rose forth to claim both tattered sides and battered hill as it's own sprawling prize!" At this note everyone turns to face stage left where in a flash of swirling light an illusionary green dragon appears with a roar.

"Battered yes but dead no the ancient foes turned a new as heros rallied forth, to join together in fragile piece: a truce at nail hill thus born." At this the bard hops off the stage and a steady drum beat begins to grow as the a cleric heals the fallen RawBreath who claps hands with IronFist as the two lead a charge against the dragon.

Round and round the mortals fought, scattered and regrouped until at last the the overwhelmed dragon was pulled down, but the fighting paused only long enough for a dirty and bleeding IronFist to raise his banner in victory, while RawBreath swong a heavy mace against the dwarf from behind.

"The dragon dead, the battle not, the fighting raged a-new, as goblin treachery slew anew the truce on the bloody hill." The bard finishes as a mist settles across the stage. "The dwarves were beaten back, and goblins all did flee, but both call the dreadful day at least a partial victory.

Today there stands a distant hill a few brave prospectors dare try, but every night the hills sing woe and the ghosts arise again: for none have told these restless ones there foe no longer stands"

And so the performers ends with the participants all giving a bow. Some of the patrons leave in small knots commenting over the show while others approach the stage to speak with the performers or give coins to the tip jar.

"Now That was entertainment, much better than the watching those noisy fools at the barrel shootout you took me to!" one snobbish noble woman loudly tells the gentleman she was with.

"Good luck flop face!" one repeat viewer jeers, but having already seen the worst once before you're ready this time.

At the whistle the barrels gives a spirited jerk but Hallia's ready and not only stays atop this time but opens up with a volley.

*Whack!* *Whoosh* *Whack!* *Whoosh* *Whack!* *Whack!*

Of his first six shots two miss, but the remainder strike true shattering clay vessels to the cheers of the crowed. With 5 seconds to go the mage half turns lifting his bow in victory before the crowed, but the move costs his balance and nearly sends him tumbling to the ground. However he makes a small recovery and manages to stay on his ride until the final whistle blows and he can drop safely to the ground without risking a DQ.

The crowed gives a mix of laugher and cheers as the contest master comes forward to hand you a commemorative dart.

"Well done champion! Now, if you'll just step this way I'll see about arranging for you to either participate in or view the upcoming Riding Trial"

Cac-kt
The clerk looks up at you and frowns slightly. "Uh... sure mons, ah, Sir. You don't have to kill it, only knock it out. You win as long as it's limp and unconscious, actual killing isn't required."

Details:

After a short wait in line with other rat wackers its your turn. You are offered your choice of a simple club, quarterstaff, or great club. You may only strike the rat with the selected weapon they explain. After taking a weapon you are quickly ushered int the arena ring where you stand slightly uncertain holding the wooden implement as they shut the ring door behind you. The ring is bounded by a 5 ft tall smooth glassy wall and is 15 feet wide. Outside the ring on one side are a set of bleachers full of wide-eyed whispering humanoids, with an assorted mix of fair workers standing quietly (and out of sight of the spectators) along the other sides.

Please, just name an event (shooting, ridding, obstacle, or melee). Any event. You've had your fluff, now lets get you your qualifications.

Alexis
Soon after you arrive back at the exotic stable a horn blows and people all around you turn to crowed a street to cheer. Being in the back away from the street you can't see much, but you can spot what appears to be a burly orc playing a war-horn from the back of a dire-bear leading a procession of colorful flags on longspears. You can't see the creatures holding the flags.

Down by your feet a small voice rises up: "Mommy, I can't see... what is it?" as a young halfling child addresses a female adult, who is trying to hold on to a second child that looks determined to crawl through the forest of legs ahead of them. Apparently they have an even worse view than you.

Hallia
55 minutes pass from the time you leave the wac-a-rat to the time you leave the riding challenge. Outside you find a long festive procession winding its way past you. Small knots of warriors of a myriad of races holding standards on spears are move past. It would be sorry excuse for a parade, but it looks like hundreds of fair goers have joined in around the dignitaries swelling the line into a long flowing mass.

Cac-kt
After a brief consultation the attendants grant you use of two clubs, but balk at giving you more.

The fight:

[roll0]

You don't have to wait long: shortly after the door closes a rat is suddenly tossed into the arena without warning. It's 15 pounds of scarred rat four feet in length from the tip of it's nose to the end of it's tail.

Arial View Description

The fair is laid out as three concentric ovals for main roads (wide in the East-West, narrow North-South). The inner most boarders the Central Plaza, the outermost runs along a 15 ft tall outer wall studded with 8 30-ft tall watch towers. Two major thoroughfares cut through the fair grounds running North/South, one tangent to the East end of the Plaza, the other tangent to the West end. Other smaller lesser streets and alleyways run throughout the fairgrounds. There are four gates into and out of the fair, one at each end of each thoroughfare.

All told, the fair is an oval 1,300 ft long (East/West) and 1,000 ft wide (North/South) with the Central Grand Plaza a rectangle at the center 600 ft long and 300 ft wide.

The parade is entering the fair ground at the SE gate, continues north to the Grand Plaza where it circles around the Plaza until it reaches the SW corner of the Plaza where the exuberant fair goers are separated from the official elements. The Barrel Ride is located on the outer side at the SE corner of the inner boulevard. The shooting gallery is located on the outer edge of the inner boulevard at the SW corner. Assuming you have made your three pass-overs in the same direction as the parade flow you are 30 ft above the ground (even with the tops of the tallest buildings) 100 ft north of the Barrel Ride.

There are two cages that may meet your criteria: a stout wooden cage carved and varnished such that an aristocrat might use to keep an exotic animal (60 gp, 30 lbs) and a practical iron cage useful for (small) dangerous animal transport (100 gp, 50 lbs) A simple lock available for 25 extra.

And where can I get him healed? And what's a good name for a rat?"

"Of course it will work, an excellent cage for a prestigious rat! I'd recommend an equally prestigious name for such a beast, perhaps... Raspberry, Eloquent Fang, or even Pachydermatous Glutton? In fact, I'd be happy to paint the name on the cage in matching style and quality... only 2sp a letter."

((Cac-kt's doesn't have to be a gullible chop, but he's come across as 'simple' 'naive' and 'foreign' to the shop owner, and many immoral shop owners across time practice the tradition of painlessly liberating country rubes from the evil influence of their money.

I look forward to see who you refine this, and if his personality changes over the adventure.

The gnome carefully picks up and inspects the rat.

"No, I was right. It's a 'She', and while Eloquent Fang is suitable for either gender I believe it does have a subtle feminine ring that suits her" The gnome says firmly. "Now, that will be 34 silvers extra for the food and name painting. I'm afraid I don't have any 'toys' for a rat, but perhaps she'd like a length of pear-wood for gnawing, only 1 silver a foot." He finishes has he begins to collect your money and start his painting.

With the crowd you can't charge, but you close to within 10 ft before his reactions kick in and he turns and scurries through the crowd and disappears a corner into an ally 30 ft away before the bystanders can react. With the halfling's short legs he's probably not that far ahead.

Hallia & Alexis
At one end of a twisty ally not built for fair goers is a halfling accused of pick-pocketing. He is currently being detained by a determined looking woman holding a diminutive hand crossbow (by what usually is the pointy end). There's a brief struggle between the two that ends with the thief staggering backwards a step.

At the other end of the street is an affluent looking man (a mage?) standing with many other gawkers drifting forward to see the commotion.

Surging forward from the gawkers toward the human woman and the male halfling is a minor mob composed of four classes of individuals. Everyone who discovered they had been robbed (and is assuming this is the robber), burley 'assistance' to robbed nobility come to claim interest on the loss in pounds of flesh, hooligans who are pretending to be robbed in hopes of a cut, and three outnumbered guardsmen who are supposed to keep the order.

Crime pays for those few who avoid detection (in this fair less than 40%) but is painfully expensive to the majority who are caught. Like this thief.

The mob stumbles to a halt as a largish cat massive feline, a panther of sorts a lion large even compared to it's own kind, rounds a corner and moves to the woman's side in response to the commotion. The guards fight to the front of the crowd where one moves toward the woman, thief, and cat while the other two demand order and try (with very limited success) to force the crowd backward and out of the alley.
