Third picture down. (http://russianfun.net/russian-fun/russian-playgrounds-are-special/)

Needless to say, I just about crapped my pants.

I always knew Russia was a "unique" place, but this is just freaky. I am at a complete loss for words to describe what the designers of those things were thinking...

I wish we had some squid monsters in the playground around here...

C'thulu and skeletons are really cool. And wasps and Aligator, creative. Playgrounds aren't about bright colors and all, people! Live is tough in Eastern Europe! :smalltongue:

Anyway, some things are just plain weird and the some...

Well, some are normal postcomunistic hopelessness - I mean those horses, snakes and other "artistically" and "carefully" made stuff. Can be still spoted in some places in Poland , too.

In Soviet Russia, YOU play with Cthulu's mind!

In Soviet Russia, playground plays on you...?

Why weren't there any Cthulhus on the playgrounds where I used to play! :smallannoyed:

The rest looks pretty familiar and didn't even make me raise an eyebrow, though. Welcome to a post-Soviet playground, everyone.

RUSSIAN PLAYGROUNDS = EFFING CREEPY.

They're all dismal and grey and Soviet, full of weird graffiti and crawling with tetanus and rust. My childhood was awesome. Ah, to be young again.

To be honest, I was more worried by the goastelephant, from that gallery (SFW, but not SFmind):

Cthulu: Mind wreaking elder evil and child molester?

To be fair, I've seen a lot of similar stuff here in Denmark. Well, except for Cthulu, the speared crocodile and the poop slides.

Indeed. As if he's not creepy enough when he's not molesting three year olds.

A lot of that stuff is really creative, but some of it is just... creepy. C'thulu and the elephant and the murdered crocodile creep me out the most.

Please tell me I'm not the only one who saw the crocodile and thought of the movie Hook. That. Is. Awesome.

Where in Russia is this? Might pop over to look at it next time I'm in Petes if I'm there...

and I think you'll find its GrandFather Frost in Russia he's replacing...:smalltongue: Good ol' Dedyshka Moroz and his army snowman henchman...

I wish my playground had Cthulhu (that's the correct spelling, by the way) in it.

But if you scroll down to the comments, there are people claiming that a lot of these pictures aren't from playgrounds and some aren't even from Russia.

Are there any that are neither from playgrounds or Russia?

Yeah, I noticed that - one of them is definitely from, like, Prague or someplace, if you look at the city in the background, it's not a Russian background at all ...

Here (http://www.englishrussia.com/?p=509) are (http://www.englishrussia.com/?p=1233) some more, including some from Piter. A few more on the site too.

The one with the city in the background might not be from Russia, but it isn't from Prague either. I have been to that city enough to know what it looks like and that isn't the way. But it could be in pretty much any other eastern European city or large town though.

Hm...no, my childhood missed the horrific Soviet playgrounds...I grew up among the crappy painted steel contraptions that passed for playgrounds in the early 90s. But some things were left over, and they were pretty funny.

Bah, except for the elder evil, most of this isn't any worse that some of what's seen in the so called 'western' world.

I'm sure that if you go about selecting stuff from the 'western' world as selectively and untruthfully as they did, you'd have a selections that's at the very least equally bad, and most likely worse.

Mind sharing the joke in non-cyrillic? :smalltongue:

Anwyay, I'm disturbed by the number of people here claiming "Oh, that's normal in Russia/Eastern Europe. Some of those things are freaky! The pooping elephant would probably make kids laugh, but the huge evil doctor with a syringe? Or the defaced evil child-caricatures dying in the snow? That scares even adults.

In one of the links there are a couple of characters from the Russian children's cartoon Nu, Pogodi!, Wolf and Rabbit.

Does anyone honestly consider the statue in the middle of the flowers creepy? It just looks like a Sikh or maybe a Tsar to me.

To be fair, I think most of the headless and otherwise defaced 'toys' are the result of vandalism.

I kinda agree that 50% of that is NOT playgrounds. Ctulhu and skeletons for sure... Probably modern artsy statues. Skeletons are probably

Nu Pogodi! is a Russian Tom & Jerry/Road Runnerish cartoon with a wolf and a hare (rabbit). Except the wolf is more refined and less thuggish like in American cartoons.

But yeah, Russian playgrounds sucked, mostly thanks to vandals (90% of whom are teens trying to act thuggish and tough who have nothing better to do than sit around, smoke, drink beer and chuck knives at stuff, later either growing out of it or becoming gopniki...). Maintenance guys simply couldn't paint the swearwords out fast enough and mostly gave up in lots of places.

Cthulhu calls!

Cthulhu is very popular in Russia. Especially among younger people.

Cthulhus. 400 Roubles.

In fact, Russian president at some point got a question during a press-conference about Cthulhu. That was quite funny

Then again, Medved is pretty much a national symbol, especially since Medvedev got elected:
http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/absurdopedia/images/thumb/1/16/Herb_daniji_preved_.jpg/180px-Herb_daniji_preved_.jpg
Now, I can't really put into words what Medved is and what his Preved does. It is too awesome for words. Just believe in it, ok?

Guys, if you post in Russian, please also post translation in English, no need to get this thread locked (and get infractions to boot!). Well, some stuff is not too easy to translate (anyone knows how to translate "кабздец" into English? Cuz I don't...) but attempt at least :smallwink: At the very least, transliterate...

Превед медведко от креведко!
Haven't seen it put this way...

Translation: Hello Medved from Shrimp.

... Yes, phrase loses a lot upon translation.
