i decided to make a japanese style fey world.

HEIKA:

Heika is then name of the world of the spirits. They are the associated aspects of nature, for instance, Kitsune are the embodiment of peace and harmony among the world, and Ookami are the embodiment of war and anger. There are a total of 5 races in Heika. Each are aspects of animals. They appear as if they were part human part animal, but are in fact totally fey.

RACES:

KITSUNE:
The Kitsune are the embodiment of peace and harmony, focusing on diplomacy and healing, not war. Kitsune are roughly 6’3’’ on average, in height. They are slight of build, and live in tunnels underground just as foxes. Their features resemble those of foxes, with brown, red or the rarer black or white color fur. A few rogue Kitsune are evil but the majority are good. Kitsune society is [whatever type there is that is a magocracy for healers].

+2 wis, -2 str.
Darkvision [owing to the fact that they live underground]
Spell-like abilities: Speak with Animals 1/day, as the gnome racial ability.
Medium
Favored Class: Cleric/Monk

Ookami:
Ookami are the embodiment of bestial fury, and violence, and therefore the polar opposite of the Kitsune. They have the visage of a wolf, and are roughly 6’5’’ and have a heavy build. The color of their fur ranges from stark white to black to coal gray. Ookami society is matriarchal, and most of the female Ookami are greatly respected and treated well, however anyone who breaks the pack rules is either treated like a lower class of person, or more often, cast out. These rules generally have to do with respect for the pack-mother, the chief of the Ookami tribe. The pack mother is always the best hunter and/or the wolf who has had the most pups [child birthing is VERY important for Ookami. Killing a pup is as bad as massacring the village.] because child birthing, and children are so important to the Ookami they will often protect the pups, or pregnant females with their life. Ookami live on plains or in forests, and therefore are direct rivals with the Tategami. They are very poorly suited for the northern reaches, being that they are not used to extreme cold, or frost.

Tategami:
Embodiments of honor and respectability, Tategami have the facial features of a lion, and are 6’7’’ to 7’0’’. They almost always have tan fur, with the rare white. A white Tategami is called a Hazumi, and often becomes the Pridefather. The Pridefather is the leader of the Tategami society, and all of the pride follows his orders, from the lowest cub, to the oldest male. They live on the plains, and are nomads, moving to different places once the source of prey has run out. They look down on the more savage races of the Ookami, and the Kurohyou.

KUROHYOU
The Kurohyou are panther like beings that live in the jungles of Heika. The are fast and quick, and stand at 7’2’’ to 7’5’’, the tallest of all the races’, of which they are quick to remind. They hunt at night, and sleep during the day. There society is all but nonexistent. They have no cities, no artifacts, no reminders they were anywhere. They are generally lazy, but when called for they can be quite savage. The color of their fur is often mistaken for purple but is really dark black. Their mouths are to delicate the bite with, unlike the other feline race of Heika, or real panthers even.

Favored Class: Rogue

KARASU
the karasu appear to be part raven, and are the embodiment of chaos and trickery. they are approximately 5'2'' to 5'5''. they have different color wings depending on the region they live in, the karasu living in yamatakei [the largest mountain range in heika] have brown or black wings, and the ones in the winterbound have white wings. similarly, the karasu in yamatakei use there legs less because its so mountainous, and as such have a lower movement rate than the karasu living in the winterbound, where they use their legs more. the hair of a karasu always matches the color of its wings. karasu eyes are generally black or gray, and the karasu in yamatakei are tanned and the ones in the winterbound are usually paler. karasu generally take more to the arcane arts than the divine, but clerics have been known.

one of the enemies of the races of Heika is known as the Oni, but are in fact demons [keeping with the whole japanese thing.] they live in the western marshes, and often raid the plains, attacking the Ookami and the Tategami. they have no known leader.

*house rule 1*
spells in this world that would normally affect humanoids, affect fey instead. if a spell would affect fey, but is used on a humanoid, it doesn't affect the humanoid. the spells that do affect humanoids are still available.

what are your thoughts? oh, and does anyone know of a good map making program [hopefully free]?

thanks in advance for posting!
